Mariposa is a bit out of the way for us, but my geology instructor told us about this and we really wanted to attend. The drive up is pleasant, with good scenery, and the fairgrounds are very easy to find. The best part was, the entire show was free! I don't think I've ever been to any other shows like this that were free. I had planned to buy things so not having an entrance fee made it even better. There were two indoor buildings completely full of vendors. They were selling jewelry, rare mineral specimens, fossils and even gold prospecting equipment. Everyone we talked to was really friendly (that seems to be how rock people are!) and no one was overly pushy. Outdoors were food vendors and my personal favorite, geode cutting! There were bins of geodes of all different sizes and you could choose which one you wanted and they would cut it open for $2. The prices were very reasonable. I ended up choosing a nice one, and I felt like a 5-year-old as I opened it for the first time. As the man who cut it said, I was the first person to see inside of it for millions of years! We plan to be back next year. I highly recommend it! Also the Mariposa State Mining & Mineral Museum was also free this weekend.
