Pretty happy to have a Long & McQuade in my neck of the woods. This location is just off of 137th ave in the industrial area not far from either St. Albert Trail or 156th street. They have an acoustic room which I much prefer in being able to sit down and play quietly and look at all the options. Recently brought our 9 year old here after Christmas to pick out her first guitar of her own. She found a fabulous bright coraly-pink acoustic that came with a case on sale for under $200 and surprisingly sounded great. Hubs picked up a Merlin (related to dulcimer) which he as been wanting to get. Total transaction was less than $400 which if you play guitars, know is a freaking miracle. Opted for the additional year of insurance on both for $5, why not? What keeps them from a 5 star? Well, we had to wait to find someone to help us a couple times and really, couldn't you let my daughter pick out a couple 50 cent neon pink picks for free when we're buying two instruments? One of the staff was talking to a customer, I overheard something that made me cry. He talked about woman like meat for everyone to hear. First time i went to this place and the staff there is super nice and very friendly and did a very good job on replacing all my strings for my telecaster and my classical guitar. I can also find a variety of accessories for my guitars, like capos, strings, picks, patch cords, and cases. The second level of Mother's Music is drums, drums, drums! From traditional kits to ethnic percussion, there is a variety of brands and prices. If you need skins, practise pads, sticks, or any other kind of drum accessory, this is the place to be. I fought the urge to purchase some congas, which I recently played at a jam session. Music fans will also find a variety of songbooks, instructional videos, and music memorabilia like hats and t-shirts. I came in to purchase a soprano ukulele. I left empty handed and disappointed. Here is why. We came in and had to look for an associate. When we found someone to inquire about purchasing a ukulele, she simply said "in the acoustic room" and pointed us to it. Then she walked away. We thought it strange, but decided to go to the room. The room was nice with a large selection of instruments. The ukulele section wasn't large, with many lower end ones, with a mix of some higher as well. We spent about 10 minutes examining them, and no one was there to help us. I tried to flag down an associate, but they were chatting with each other and I don't think they really cared I was there. I made the decision to leave. I'm sure I could have tried to get more help, but I figured I could go somewhere else to find someone to help me in making this large purchase. I ended up buying a concert ukulele later from Acoustic Music Shop where I had an amazingly knowledgeable staff member help me. read more

Mother's music is a great store. It's not as good as AXE but it is pretty close. It is packed with wall to wall instruments and accessories. The staff is really helpful. They know there stuff and try and get you the best bang for your buck. I mostly enjoyed just browsing and messing around with some of the instruments but if you are actively looking for a new guitar or drum or some other instrument you will be satisfied here. The prices are the same as most music places but the selections better. read more

I had to come in and show the boys at L&M some love . I notice that alot of the negative reviews are from over 5 years ago and wanted to write a more fair and updated review for the people interested in visiting the store. I went in today to buy an electric guitar tuner and amp cord. I bought them and went home, and realized that the tuner was defective. I also realized that the amp I had bought earlier had a cord stashed in the stash box inside the amp ( I'm new to playing and didnt realize thats how they worked ) so I went to return the products . I also noticed the guitar I bought 2nd hand earlier in the day off Kijiji had alot of fret buzz, so I brought it in to see if they could recommend a course of action. They were fine with me returning the items. I swapped the amp cord for a travel bag for my guitar so I could get it home easier after the transaction was done, and paid the difference with cash ( very nice guitar bag btw ), got a new electric tuner, and the boys recommended I give the guitar in for a mechanic full tune up which would cost around $85 . I think buddy realized by the disappointed look on my face that I didnt have $85 to spend on a tune-up, and gave me a quick little 5 minute maintenance job for free, then recommended when I have a chance that I really should come in for the full tune-up to get the guitar into top shape ( which I definitely plan on doing next payday ). I thought this was really fair and considerate of them . The prices are fair and the items are top tier. No worries of settling for cheap China made low end products here that you would typically get on Amazon or eBay ( unless You want lower end products, then they have some of those as well ) . I urge people to support local, as spending money here in the Country keeps our dollar strong, and importing cheap goods outsourced from Asia weakens our dollar. Whether you are seriously looking for a new drum or guitar, or you just want to browse, Mother's Music is a fun shop to visit. There's a huge selection of drums upstairs and helpful sales people who know their stuff. I like the hand percussion room at the top of the stairs, which is full of lots of cool instruments from different parts of the world. The prices at most music stores are the same. While you can't usually bargain them down, if you're buying a whole set you might be able to get them throw in something. My boyfriend bought his whole drum set at Mother's and they gave him a drum stool. He goes back there regularly when he's looking for additions for his set. I've gone in looking for a gift for him, and they were helpful selecting something that would work with his set. read more

I honestly didn't know what to rate L&M. The service is always hit or miss. But my last few visits made me rate them 1 out 5. The reason I rate this is because of their poor customer service in the last few months. I've bought multiple guitars from them over the years, but I've always known what I've wanted, so I've kept it to walking in and grabbing the guitar and leaving. Recently, I've been looking at spending a little more cash, so I've been taking my time and checking things out, and wanting to ask a few questions... but this is where I'm running into an issue. Nobody. Comes. To. Help. You. But my last visit was my tipping point. The last 4 visits I've had to ponder my next purchase, I haven't been helped. Not a "hello" when I walk through the door, not a "can I help you find anything." So I conducted a small experiment. I had the money in my pocket, willing to purchase my chosen guitar if I was helped. I walked into L&M, nobody behind the front till, which is fine, maybe they were helping somebody. The associate comes back to the front till with a costumer, and proceeds to ring him up. So I thought I was in luck! If somebody else was getting help, I was bound to be helped next! After the sale was finalized, the costumer walked out, and I continued to stand in front of the wall of guitars for 10 minutes, looking at the two I wanted to buy. Long story short, I didn't purchase a guitar that day. The associate at the front desk continued to stare at his computer screen. And another associate (not sure if he works in the guitar section) made eye contact with me, but then continued to fiddle around with headphones and amps. I'm disappointed in the service. I really love the variety of Gibson and Epiphone guitars they have to offer. I either see myself going to a shop like Stang guitars, where I know I will be helped right as I step foot through the door. Or if worse comes to worse, I may order things online from L&M to avoid having to step into their stores. But that's a worst case scenario. read more

Guitar porn! If you have a fetish for six-stringed instruments (or four, or twelve) you'll enjoy perusing this store. The employees are pleasant and friendly and don't follow you around like crazed stalkers as can happen in music stores. (That sort of practise has always baffled me - how can you shoplift a guitar or drum kit? There's no trench-coat big enough.) They asked if I needed a hand but when I told them I was only there for voyeuristic purposes, they were cool with that. They stock all the predictable brands that you would expect to see at competitive prices. Actually I was there to pick up tickets for the Steve Vai Alien Guitar Secrets Master Class coming up. The transaction went smoothly although they tried to up-sell me some 9-volt batteries for some reason. They said something about how smoke detector batteries should be replaced as part of a Victoria Day long weekend safety check. (I thought it was strange too.) When I first walked in here I thought I was in the wrong store. The employees are all decked out in dress pants and collared shirts - not the usual attire for a music store. It's definitely not the old school type of guitar shop where the sales associates look like gas station attendants and are all snobs who think they're god's gift to music. (God, I miss those days.) This store has changed names and locations over the past few years so some of the older reviews below may not be applicable anymore. In a past life, this store was a Mother's Music, As mentioned, I did not buy a guitar. To me, going into a music store is like going to a strip club...or a zoo - I'm only there to look. I rent guitars from Long & McQuade all over the country when I travel, usually for 3 weeks or a month at a time. THIS was the first bad experience I've ever had. I called in advance to make sure they had the guitar I wanted to rent and they did. (The fellow on the phone was quite pleasant!) I reserved the guitar and said I'd be in shortly. When I got there, it was after work and I was in my work pants, work boots and a dirty tee. I walked into the empty acoustic room to do some noodling and this little, curly-haired fellow followed, right on my heels. He shadowed me around the room, pretending to straighten things while I looked at their selection. After a few minutes of this, he asked if he could help me. I replied that I was actually there to rent a guitar that I'd reserved. He ROLLED HIS EYES and asked me to follow him to the front desk. I did. He pulled the case out from behind the desk and opened it up. I asked if I could take it into the acoustic room to try it out. HE ROLLED HIS EYES AGAIN!! I took the guitar from him and made my way into the room. Tried it a bit, and found a problem. I walked back out to him and said that the guitar was buzzing out when played in the higher frets and proceeded to show him. He grabbed it from me to try it himself...and it was. I asked if he had another...and the douchebag rolled his eyes a THIRD TIME!! He brought me out another and I wound up renting it instead - after trying IT out. When returning the guitar today, who do I get serving me but the douchebag! And while his douchebaggery was slightly less powerful this time around...he still was a douchebag. Avoid The northern-most Long & McQuade in Edmonton. Do yourself a favour and try one of the other locations. read more

I never visited this store before it was Long and McQuade. I've only been to L&Ms more northern location and found it to be quite cramped and hard to browse. Not the case with this downtown store. Came in on boxing day and was the first person there. Was helped by an associate who went out of his way to print off an online coupon for me. He quickly gathered everything I needed and setting up an account was quick and painless. Had a small issue with the guitar I bought, but it's my fault for not testing it. I was able to exchange it with absolutely no hassle save the return trip. The store appears to be partially under construction upstairs but the ground floor alone is huge. Large in-stock selection. I also appreciate the real-time inventory on the web site. read more

I play my guitar daily as part of my job. So when it needed repair, I hoped to find somebody who would give it the TLC it needed and provide me with quick service, since being without my guitar would compromise the service I provide. I was delighted to find Long & McQuade, close to my Oliver neighbourhood and just blocks from my work. When I took the guitar in, the technician informed me that it was a very easy repair. I asked him how long he expected it to take, and he said he'd have it in a week at the latest. He also informed me that he would be going in for surgery in two weeks, and so the repair would certainly be done by then. The repair for my instrument was minor and wouldn't take long, but there were other repairs ahead in the queue. Well, the week came and went, and I heard no word from L&M. The day of the technician's scheduled surgery came and went, and still no word from L&M. I called the following day to inquire about my guitar. I was told that the guitar had not been repaired and would not be "for a while" since the technician was out on medical leave. I was told that I could come in to pick it up. When I asked why I wasn't notified sooner (or at all, since I only learned of this on my own initiative), the staff member told me that the technician had to have emergency surgery. I asked if it was the same scheduled surgery that the technician had told me about, or had something else come up. The staff member was surprised to be caught in a lie, but informed me that it was, indeed, the same surgery. The staff member then informed me that this was not his responsibility, and that I would need to speak with a manager. Unfortunately, no manger was available at that time, but I asked when one would be available and informed the staff member that I would be in at that time to pick up my guitar. When I arrived, I got my guitar back, and it obviously had not been touched. The person working at the counter informed me that it was the next in the queue to be repaired, but "unfortunately, the technician had a medical emergency." I informed the worker that I knew the technician had scheduled the surgery and that it wasn't an emergency and they could stop the charade. I then asked to speak to a manager, and the worker would not get a manager for me, telling me that there was "nothing a manager could do" because "the guy had an emergency." I am not upset that the technician had surgery. I am not even upset that he didn't get to my repair before he went on medical leave. I realize that it's likely he had hoped to get more done before his leave, and it just didn't get done. These things happen. I understand. What I am upset about is the lack of customer service. I was never notified that the repair wasn't going to be done "for a while", and when I questioned this I was lied to and my complaint was not even given any credence. So, I will be taking my business elsewhere. I don't care that they are in my neighbourhood. They have lost not only this repair job but any future visits for strings (for my guitar or ukelele) or for drums (my son is obsessed and we had thought to buy him some there). And they lost the sale of the new Taylor guitar I had my eye on that I asked my sweetie to get me for my birthday next week. A new guitar to allow me to keep one at work and still have one for home and play. I am not sure where I will go now. But I have no doubt there are guitar stores in Edmonton who would like to sell me a new Taylor and would be willing to fix my old guitar, too. In the meantime, I'll make due with the piano at work. And hopefully those listening won't mind too much. ***UPDATE*** I took my guitar to another shop in town. They fixed it in less than 24 hours. And they charged me less than half of what I was quoted at L&M. I came back on here to lower my review to 1-star, but saw I had already given it the lowest possible rating. Don't use these guys. I wanted a concert sized ukelele. It was really difficult to get any employee attention. When I finally got his attention, he waved at the stand and said 'this is what we have'. I had checked the website before visiting and said ' well the website says this'. He said no you have to look at the store link. I told him I had done that so he went in the back and brought out the two ukuleles I was interested in. Obviously they were not in tune and wouldn't stay in tune but he didn't stick around to help retune. Had to track him down every 5 minutes. Really poor customer service. They also won't bring in a uke from a BC store unless I pay for it upfront. Myhers will tho. Going there instead. read more

A rather decent shop for music. They tend to have anything that you need when you enter the shop, and if they don't they'll order the stock and if you want they'll ship it to your residence. the service is far above average, they're all willing to help if they can and will find someone if they cannot. read more

Good store but the parking is really crappy(yes i know it's downtown),but do NOT trust the staff in the recording/pro audio section either come with the knowledge or go somewhereelse.I used a "bait" question to see if the staff there is trustworthy, they'll try to obfuscate you then promptly suggest the most expensive piece of equipment there although there are less expensive alternatives on the same wall. So quick tip,don't shop in the recording/pro-audio section of mothers music Cool music store though,Axe is overpriced although they have a better selection.If i wanted some new strings,guitar accessories i'd go to mothers music,if i want powered speakers/guitars i'd go to axe.Other then in the pro audio/recording section the staff is really nice and will tell you the pro's and con's of what you're buying and match you up with something in your price range. Most people have the rock/metal vibe.So if you want turntables i suggest you go to Axe music.One thing i seem to like about mothers music is they let you do your own thing and if you need help you ask.Unlike axe where every sales rep you see nuthugs. read more

This location is pretty disappointing unless you're a guitarist/drummer/pianist. Small sheet music selection and no band instrument knowledge. Also repairs only available from the south side store which is pretty annoying. After driving to the south they didn't fix my instrument properly anyways. Yes Mothers Music is More than just a drum shop, as they have come to advertise to the public. With the Hardrock Cafe looking guitar spinning round and round on the outside. This music store is unlike any other in the area. With friendly helpful staff that will find you just about anything you need. "Need More Cowbell???" they got it and they'll show you how to make it work. With Studio style sound proof booths to "testdrive" that new guitar or bass with all the pedals you need to be sure your buying what you paid for. Yes they are a drum shop and decicate a whole floor and section to it...Make sure you check out their events calendar as many times there are drum sessions by some of the worlds greatest. Rentals are available, as well as Lay away plans...my only concern is you are stuck buying avaliable stock and would have to continue looking, as they are licensed to distribute choosen merchandise, and do so when renting. read more

I purchased a drum kit from L&M in May - I was told 4-6weeks delivery. After 4 months some of the kits arrived & now have been told that I have to wait an additional 4-6 weeks for the rest. 4-6 weeks has turned into 4-6 MONTHS! Very disappointing. read more
