Pros: They are kid-friendly. The owner has his kids working with him. The kids were great. You don't have to know anything about horseback riding. You are taken to the beach in a group setting. The horses know the way and the pace. They sell these cute keychains at the front desk with the horse's names and hair on them. My kids loved them! The owner tries to take pictures for you and sends them to you post-ride. They are action shots from a distance, so adjust expectations. Cons: It is a group ride. For better or for worse, everyone is saddled 15 min prior to the ride. We were a couple minutes late (less than 10), everyone was waiting for us. They had called 10 min prior to the ride and I said I was at the store and would be there in a few. I didn't know everyone would be waiting. Anyway, I was getting my kid cough medicine and trying to get cash. Note: While they state they prefer cash, they would rather you be there early than pay with cash. The owner's response to my tardiness was to announce to the group that the reassignment of specific horses was due to the tardiness. Hence, why they ask you to be there 15 min early. A) I don't recall that detail when I booked. They initially scheduled me for the wrong day, so it's possible one or both of us got that wrong. B) I teach summer school and worked GrubHub after school so I could afford this trip for my girls. I really don't need a public shaming. In my experience with horse and animal people, they tend to be rough around the edges with humans. I get it. Fun little nose-to-tail ride that is easy for beginners. Our guide gave us good instructions and the horses were mostly well behaved. A couple of the mares were a little spicy on the way back because they all wanted to be first in line to get home and have treats. Experienced and new riders will both find this an enjoyable walk along the beach. We did the 10am ride, which meant the beach was nice and quiet. The horses were well tempered when we walked past heavy construction equipment in order to reach the beach. We rode right up to the water's edge. All of our kids (15, 9, & 7) thought this was the most memorable experience we had in Long Beach. I definitely recommend! read more

Fun experience. We had ours scheduled on a Friday afternoon and received a call from them couple hrs before saying due to high winds, they have to reschedule us to the next morning. I loved riding here! Our guide was friendly, funny, and very relaxed. She even let us trot on the beach if we wanted to, which unfortunately is not something every horse guide lets you do. The horses here are also more upbeat and healthier looking than horses I have seen at other riding places. You can definitely tell these horses love their job (: My family showed up minutes before a ride not knowing you need to make reservations. DO NOT RIDE WITH THESE PEOPLE!! Especially if you have children. IT IS NOT SAFE! I normally read reviews but this was a last minute thing and we booked the ride the night before. Me, my 10yo and 8yo children got there and watched two wranglers run around for 20 minutes trying to get the horses ready to go. They were very unorganized. The guy gave the kids helmets and the lady 'Bambi' said "that's a good idea, I wouldn't have thought to get helmets." Really?! Well she took 11 of us out by herself. No instructions on what to do. She had no control of the horses or even the horse she was riding. She said that I was on a horse that is use to being a lead horse so that's why he kept trying to get ahead. Why am I being put on a lead horse and I have rode a horse once in my life. While we're out she says "when we get to the turn around point the horses will pick up the pace a bit because they're ready to go home". Well they did more than pick up the pace. Once we turned around all of the horses started running as fast as they could, stampeding. My 8yo daughter and another little girl fell off of their horses. The Bambi lady couldn't even get her horse to stop. As I'm hanging on for dear life i can see Bambi in the corner of my eye next to me screaming STOPPPP, stopppp, stoppp. You could tell even she was terrified. There's another little girl next to me hanging on as hard as she could, I just see her bouncing around screaming for her mom. Me and her finally got to the other group of horses and the lady that runs the horse rides for a DIFFERENT COMPANY across the street helped stop the horses and I jumped off to run back down the beach to find my daughter. My daughter has a hurt back, we're all very sore. The little girl next to me was having issues with her back and ended up having to be taken by ambulance to the hospital. The old lady that sits in the shack collecting payment was screaming at us and telling us that it was our faults because we were told not to make the horses run. NO ONE MADE THE HORSES RUN. As soon as we got to the turn around point they all took off. No one could get them to stop. Clearly this wasn't the first time this happened. One wrangler came out to help and he said "what's going on" and we said what happened and told him that Bambi didn't have control of the horses and he said "she never does". Do not take your children on these horses!!! It is not safe! I'm not writing this review to gain anything, I didn't even ask for my money back. I am really concerned about any child who is put on these horses. I am honestly surprised no one died. It was the most traumatizing experience me and my kids have gone through. read more

Horseback riding on the beach conjures up images of a white stallion galloping just close enough to the waters edge to create a refreshing mist for the rider who fearlessly looks off into the distance clad in a flowing dress and a wild tangle of hair much like her steed's. While...this is not the case with said outfit, I did enjoy that I had the opportunity to do this with my dad and boyfriend. The staff booked us for a 10 o' clock ride not far from where we were staying. The ride is a mere $25 each. They stand you up on some steps and have you swing a leg over your horse after telling you the horse's name and leading you to the water bin. They give you the run down on how to drive your pony, and what's on the agenda. My horse was Cedar, and as you can guess, a beautiful Cedar color. I faintly hear someone say, "I hope you're not afraid of heights" and look back to see that Robert is put on literally the biggest black horse I've ever seen in my life. His name was Mark. They lead you out of the stable to collop through some brush that then opens up onto a long stretch of Pacific coast. Our guide, and his trusty herding dog named Amos, then lead you down the beach. He advises for the front horse to walk but if you'd like to trot to pull your horse back and you can trot forward some. Cedar wasn't having any of that. I couldn't really get my horse to meet up with Robert's behemouth and my pop's horse so there was a lot of rotating in my seat to snap photos of them. My dad referred to the horses at nose-to-tail, I guess meaning that's all they really do. There wasn't any raucous behavior and the energy level was somewhere way below lethargic. It was pleasant speaking with our guide about the area, and how the dog's corral the horses and the view was nice but I definitely couldn't do this for any more than an hour. We were led back to the stable, you jump off, say howdy-doody, and go on your way. For the adrenaline junkie, i.e. my sig. other, this wasn't necessarily his cup of tea, and it was hard for us to enjoy it together since his horse was slower than a motorized Lazy Boy (yes we have these in New Orleans, shout out Laissez Boys!). But for someone looking for a unique opportunity to enjoy the coastline without having to walk it, this is a great pastime in this area! Some tips! Wear a fanny pack! I know that sounds lame but I didn't really have a spot to put my phone between pony paparazzi moments and stallion selfies. Maybe...consider wearing thicker pants. My boney butt is a wee bit sore. Talk to your guide, they might be just as mellowed out as you are and would love to chat about the coast and what else they do. read more

Ahhhh!! So much fun for $25 and one hour of our time. Everyone I told about horseback riding on the beach said it sounded "romantic" in a really corny way, but our experience was everything but corny or romantic - it wasn't meant to be! We rode in the late AM hours with a mother and her daughter, not off into the sunset. The little girl was a boss though and flew on to her horse and made me worry I wouldn't be able to get on (I did). The wrangler introduces you to your horse (I miss you, Gunner), you give him/her a pet and jump on the saddle. You're taught a few directives, but none of them seemed to matter for me or my boyfriend's horse because they did whatever they wanted. Gunner refused to turn right, and my boyfriend's horse refused to turn left. You ride single file behind the wrangler onto the beach, where you are then able to ride side by side, which was impossible for us because our horses wouldn't turn. Whatever, still super fun. Horses stick to the courses they know so well, and that was fine with me. I made a reservation the same day of our appointment, but didn't really need to. This was our first time on a horse, and I highly recommend for anyone staying in the Long Beach area. read more

I never take time to write reviews but I need to for this experience. Worst manager of an establishment that I have ever encountered in my entire life. That is the literal truth. We called in the morning to book a ride for our family. We were told we could get in for the 11:30am. We show up at 10:55 and see a ride leaving! The young man at the desk told us that was the 11:30 and we missed it! He was apologetic and told us that if we came back for the 1pm ride, he would give us half off the price. So we did. That's when we encountered the manager. Showed up at 12:30 and the manager was irate. Told us he would give us $5 off but wouldn't honor the young man's offer. He was cursing and banging his fists on the desk in front of our 5 year old daughter. Stated "I'm about to fire someone's ass out there today". Then he tried to blame us and said "if your ride was at 11:30 why would you leave early?". We said that his staff instructed us that we missed the ride and told us to come back. So then he yells "okay $45 and it better be cash"! So then we're all getting saddled up and we're getting ready to leave. They put our 5 year old daughter on her own horse without a helmet. Our guide starts giving the safety talk. Halfway through the manager storms out of the building, cuts her off, and tells her to leave immediately. HALFWAY THROUGH THE SAFETY TALK!!! Wouldn't even let her finish! So we get to the beach and the guide tells us all to huddle together. She apologises deeply and repeatedly for the way her boss acted and she finishes the safety talk. About halfway through the ride we hear a scream from the back. A horse bit a young girl on the leg and was thrown from the off. Nasty looking bite. She and her mom had to walk back. Sounded like the boss was berating the guide on the cell phone over the incident when she called to report it. The ride was beautiful and our guide tried her best to salvage the entire ride but morale was pretty low. The manager made it so we will not return and would not recommend this place to anyone. Safety does not appear to be a top priority at this establishment. The boss needs some serious anger management. I hope the guide finds a better place to work. I can't imagine how this man works with horses. read more

These guys definitely deserve 5 stars. There we very professional from the moment we walked up. Everyone greeted us and asked how we were doing and our day was When it was time to get on the horses they matched up a horse to the person riding. They found a great bigger horse named bee. She was a great horse. They explained everything we needed to know about riding them. They were always close by in case we needed them. It was a amazing ride down the beach. Wish i would have done this before on our trips to lkng beach. I think we have a new must do every trip. Oh the best part was they only charge $25 a hour. Money well spent. TERRIFYING RIDE Staff wasn't very friendly upon arrival. Morale seemed low. One handler was friendly, though. I didn't see any helmets but my kids wore their bike helmets. No other kids were wearing theirs. No safety talk prior to ride. They only told riders to not let their horses eat the grass on the beach. Only one guide went out with the group of kids. She did not stay in the lead. During the ride, the horses got spooked and took off FAST. Since the guide was not leading, the horses got away with no one to stop them. They did not respond to guides commands nor to my kids' reign pull. Guide had to catch up to horses to stop them. Thankfully no one got hurt, but my kids were terrified and in tears and a little beat up from the hard ride. I do not recommend this place for small kids. Go to the one across the street. We had a much safer experience with them the day before. Unfortunately they were closed. read more

I hate the fact, that I'm signing my life away, when I signed the waiver. I hate the fact, that I couldn't bring my umbrella for sun block, I hate chemicals! I've already had Discoid Lupus, and it took 12 years for that to fade back to normal, I ain't getting any more new ones . . . . I also understand, some of the trails are tight, and umbrella would not be possible. AND it might even scare the horse, so yeah, I get it! That's OK. I'm here to have a good time. I'm being a patient woman, it's our anniversary, I want to ride a horse, it was a surprise outing from my husband . . . since I have given him many ideas, this one was a good one, and I'm ready and the weather was THE PERFECT day for one! I put on my wide brim sombrero, & leather gloves, so let's go! After waiting for more like 10 mins. we're all saddled up and got on the horse that I've always wanted - a white horse named Bella. Hubby got a brown horse named Roxy. I hate the fact, that I was told, to put my camera away, and concentrate on riding a horse. The horse wanted to eat, and we have to steer them, so they don't. My horse Bella, was a good horse! She was also a lazy horse. When we were @ the beach, she no longer want to walk with the group, when they stopped, she stopped, waiting for them to come back, why should she go when they're going to come back this way anyway. As soon as they start to move, Bella was the 1st in line to go back. Except, she started to slow down again, and now we're the last one to get back. Sure, I can kick her, but I didn't want to make Bella upset, so I will be flying, and be the next Christopher Reeve? No, I'll let her be, and I'm happy being the last, as long as we're both happy! And no, I didn't put my camera away, I have a digital, and can take photos with a click of my finger . . . even with gloves on! I didn't need to use a large Nikon and focus with one hand and shoot with the other! And I'm proud of all the photos, I took! Thank you! You know what? I'd wanted to turn around and ride her again! But I have a hungry husband, and wants to go back to Astoria to have a relaxing lunch. read more

If you are inexperienced- you will get a great instruction on what to do. I walked past the other riding outfit, after seeing how they treated their horses on previous beach trips where we had not planned ahead time to ride horses. My daughter and I walked up to this corral and checked in. I had called over two hours in advance to reserve the 2:30 ride time, as previous riders advised we do. You pass the boarding stage and walk into the small building to pay, give names and sign the waiver releasing them of any liability, as all ride outfits do. There are no footwear rules, so two women were wearing flip flops. I suppose this is due to the fact that everyone is mounted and dismounted on the three step stage, so no feet touch the ground in the corral, where it may be an issue. There are no clothing rules either. We went back outside and the wranglers called out for anyone who had paid and signed to step up on the platform they mount riders from. This system worked well for most of us, however there was a lady in a wheelchair and she could not get up there. Her family, who was riding as well, stayed down on the ground with her. Through other patrons telling the wranglers, they figured out there were people who couldn't step onto the platform, so it worked out. The young kids were mounted first. They do have extra stirrups for kids with short legs, which are hung from the saddle pommel and those were used for one girl. The older kids are saddled up next, followed by the adults. They match horses to patrons based on height and weight. If you speak up that you have quite a bit of horse experience, they will consider that. I was matched to Gumpy. He has a beautiful gait, fast walk and is easy to direct with gentle guiding. The wranglers consist of one young man and an adult. They adjusted everyones stirrups. They have one in the lead and one holding up the rear. Everyone is asked to stay in your seat and call for a wrangler if you need help or drop something. The wranglers will pick it up for you. They also tell everyone not to let the horses eat the dune grass, as most will try. Gumpy looked at it and I gave him the same verbal correction I give my dog when she's thinking of doing something she shouldn't (just a quick ah ah) and he didn't even try. Some of the other horses were more stubborn but that may well be due to having riders who they knew didn't know how to ride. This mention of not letting the horses eat the grass is due to the fact that it will cause gut distress for the horse, so keep this in mind. They tell everyone to keep the horses five feet from one another and single file out to the beach but not all patrons figured out how to do that and I had the horse behind me in my horses butt at least once on the way back. Gumpy switched the back horse with his tail as a very patient reminder to back off. Thankfully I had room between the horse before me and myself, so I just gave him a gentle squeeze with my legs to ask him to walk a bit faster for a few steps and put some distance between us. I tend to want to help people as a general rule, so when the young girl had trouble getting her mare to go on the way out, as she kept wanting to stop (Bella was her name) I gave her some tips as the kicking she was trying to do with her little feet was likely not even something Bella was aware of. Our troop of twelve walked out through some dunes to the sand, where we stopped our horses and were directed that we could walk side by side now, along the beach and to keep the horses between the water and lose sand, for better footing. Those who want to try and trot, which is the fastest you are allowed to go, were directed to keep your horse in the back and then trot towards the lead group, at which point no one can trot. The horses in the lead are always to walk. If this isn't followed, horses being the pack animals they are, will all start trotting and not every rider is capable or comfortable with this. The wranglers did a great job and remained aware of all riders. The young wranglers little sister rode beside us, unofficially and also helped out if needed. She knows her way around horses. Gumpy walked quickly on the way out and wanted to be in the lead. I found out later he was the lead wranglers horse recently, so that was why he wanted to be up there. When they called out to turn our horses and head back, that left us in the back so I took the chance I had and asked him to trot. He has just as beautiful of a gait in trot as walking. I've ridden quite a few trail horses in the last few years and he is the best I've ridden. I was amused though, as he was so quick on the way out yet clearly not thrilled to head back. He slowed down the closer we got to the corral. Even if you are only on your horse an hour, strech, strech and strech some more both before you get on and after. This is important for everyone, yet especially true if you don't ride regularly. I drove over two hours to get there and then didn't strech as much as I should have so the dismount was a bit stiff. read more

When we arrived at 1625 for our 1630 ride, like scheduled, they were loading up other people in our time slot. The lady's response....sorry. She had plenty of time to call and tell us she was late or that we'd have to do it another time. Avoid this place like the plague. They couldn't give a crap about their customers which leads me to believe they treat their animals the same. read more

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. There were no safety protocols in place, no helmets provided, no basic info about riding the horses, nothing was said about what to do if things go wrong. We were half-ass told how to pull the reigns if the horses start eating grass, and that was about it. They didn't even tell us how to "go", my friend had to yell out & ask after the lead wrangler started to trot away. Multiple horses had cracks on their hooves & were acting as if they were dog tired. Other reviews said they think the horses have been mistreated & I absolutely agree. The first half of the walk was fine- But the moment we got to the turnaround point, all but a couple horses took off in a full speed run back to the stable area, including mine. In a matter of seconds my son was slipping out of my arms, I was slipping off the saddle, and no matter how hard I pulled on the reigns (was trying to pull either left or right in order to get the horse to turn & possibly slow down), my horse did not budge. She was going so fast I couldn't get a solid grip on my son and I knew that if I didn't get off the horse within the next few seconds I was going to lose him & he would be trampled and killed by the horses running next to & behind us. I let go of the reigns, pulled my son as close to the front of me as I could, and let myself fall backwards off the horse. Landing on my back onto the hard wet sand knocked the wind out of me- I couldn't breathe but I knew I had a split second to get us up and out of the way in case we were in the path of another running horse. I picked him up and ran off to the side. All but a few people were thrown off their horses. There were multiple kids on this ride, one who had to be airlifted to the hospital, & an elderly lady who all fell off and were injured. Neither one of the wranglers stopped to see if we were okay, they just went back to the stable area and left us. It took me over 30 min to limp back with my son & once we were there, again no one checked on us to see if we were okay. People were clearly hurt & shaken up but there was no reassurance or apologies from any of the employees. The lack of guidance, safety, and care for us was shocking. One of them told my friend that she's worked here for over 2 years and this has never happened before....but that is absolutely untrue because according to the reviews (which I wish I read beforehand), this has been going on for at least a year and dozens of people have been thrown from their horses & injured. They knowingly, and willingly, put children in danger. There is a waiver you sign before riding that says horses can be unpredictable. I know and understand that. But this wasn't a "what are the chances" type situation. Their horses have a track record of suddenly taking off at full speed and people falling and getting hurt, they should absolutely be disclosing this information AND putting new/better safety protocols in place. Maybe start with providing helmets & actually giving a basic riding/do and dont's lesson. There's a dozen things this company could have done differently/better to avoid this horrible experience from happening. Anyone with half a brain knows that if one horse in the herd starts running, the others will follow. It is astonishing how careless this business is and its only a matter of time before someone dies from the recklessness of this company. I'm writing this review from bed, I have multiple blue and purple bruises all over my body- thighs, stomach, shoulders, and lower back. My tailbone is busted from the fall & I can barely walk. Every muscle in my body hurts. Thank god my son didn't get physically hurt, but he's emotionally and mentally traumatized. I hope everyone else who was injured yesterday is doing okay, especially that little girl. So if anyone is considering going here for a leisurely horse back ride on the beach, please don't. The risk isn't worth it. read more

What a NIGHTMARE. To cut the story short... there was no direction or safety spiel given before we were on the horses. There was no emergency plan of action in case something happened. When we went to turn around and head back towards the office, 10 to 15 horses just started to run at full gallop. My friend had to tuck her son into her body and bail off her horse at full speed. There was a woman dragged by her reigns for about 30 feet. Two children were trampled and later air lifted to the hospital and a 70-year-old lady was thrown off. When I passed her she looked unconscious. None of the guides were stopping to help assist the people that were laying on the ground. Only two out of 15 to 20 people were able to stay on their horse. The communication was all bad, safety was not the first priority also no helmets were issued. Please if you value your safety or your kids safety please do not go here. What a nightmare. Don't ruin your trip thinking this is a good company to ride horses at. read more

I had a great time! Thought they were closed when I didn't initially hear back. But I got a call today saying they were open. They were even willing to take me out solo if no one else showed up for the last ride of the day. Super friendly staff, family owned, hard workers. You can tell they love the animals and what they do. The fella in charge, whose family owns it, gave you a dad joke and introduced you to your house, giving you a little backstory when he loaded you on. The ride is beautiful, along the undeveloped beaches, it's really a treat and such a good deal! Highly recommend! read more
