We've gone charter fishing here for three years and have a great time. Butch and Mooch always make us feel welcome and are great with rookies and kids. I always feel safe with these guys, even crossing the infamous Columbia River bar. If you listen to what they say and pay attention to your rod you will catch fish. We've only gone a few times but every time we go the boat is filled with repeat customers. We've only gone for salmon but one of these days we're going to have to try them for sturgeon. Highly, highly recommend them. The motel rooms are very plain but get the job done and it's great to get up in the morning and only have to walk a few feet to drop our stuff in the car and then get out to the boat. You definitely want to make a reservation ahead of time to "sleep by the fleet." At the price of fresh caught salmon these days the trip practically pays for itself. Also be sure to bring layers (it WILL be cold in the morning but might get hot as the day goes on) and some kind of waterproof boots/footwear is advisable as water will come on deck in big swells when it's windy. Bring some drinks and snacks for the day but go easy on breakfast if there's any chance you get seasick. Finally make sure to bring plenty of cash to tip your deckhand!! read more

I can't speak highly enough about these guys. They're affordable AND experienced. We brought home 2 coho on a Buoy 10 charter. They were great with giving direction and seemed just as excited every time someone brought in a salmon. We caught 5 fish between 4 charter guests. After we booked our seats with Ilwako Coho, I emailed another charter company I had inquired about (who's seats were almost twice as expensive). I wrote the other company back with a simple message, 'we decided to go with another company, but thanks for getting back to me' (no mention of cost). Their response was that if I chose another charter because of cost I would be let down because "you get what you pay for". They couldn't have been more wrong. Ilwako Coho Charters proved that they can deliver awesome service, affordably. There is no doubt who we will go back to when we do another trip. read more

Great crabbing experience! My wife and I were in the area and had wanted a crab trip. Almost impossible to find in Astoria but I remembered speaking with these people two years before. The trip was reasonable at $115 per person plus $12 for the one day license. It is basically a boat ride where you can do as much or as little to participate as it is pulling up crab traps and measuring and checking sex before they go in the holding tank. We all limited out on keepers and the company cooks them for you at no extra charge, (that's a lot of propane.) Butch and Mike were very good, no complaints. Ice available in the office for $2 a bag. I would highly recommend this company. read more

Coho is a top notch charter!! First off, they will put you on the fish!! Our boat limited out on salmon and came home a few hours early!! This is a family owned business and it shows! Super knowledgeable people running this outfit - captain Chris and deckhand Brandon are professionals and keep things fun, but run the charter like a well oiled machine! Brandon gave helpful pointers throughout and was quick to re-rig my bait after my first fish. I caught two Coho on this trip and watched someone bring in a 27 lb Chinook!! - one of the largest fish caught the season. Thanks for a very memorable trip Coho!! Just one comment, just watch how they mark your fish after you catch them. I had a 25 + lb chinook change into a 12lb chinook. Other than that our trip on the coho mooch was fantastic. On my second day of fishing I went on the Coho king. Got up at 3:30 in the morning got on the boat at 4:15 AM thinking that I could reserve a spot. Wrong! Apparently they have a rule where they can put a ribbon around the pole holder that they want the night before. Which was not disclosed to me at any time. About the time it was time to fish, a gentleman stood up beside me and said that's my pole holder. Surprise surprise, I had to find another place to fish on the boat. I am just saying this, so in the future somebody knows that if a pole holder has a ribbon by it, it might be reserved from a previous day. By the way I think this is very unfair. Not because of the ribbon concept. But because that it was not disclosed what the ribbon was for. read more

My four brothers and two of my nephews fished and stayed this year at Coho Charters. The Motel was excellent and the fishing for Salmon was great. Between the six of us we reeled in over 200 lbs. of Salmon with our numbers dwindling over the three day trip from six to three over the trip. We plank Bar-B-Qued filleted Salmon that we did ourselves on tables on the nice public boardwalk, in the parking lot, and drank beer to excess and had a hell of a good time wandering about a town filled with the most friendliest people in the world. We ate wonderful meals at the surrounding eateries, the best was Don's Port side. We fished the Coho Mooch with an excellent crew. Butch and the bait boy were the greatest. One day we fought terrible seas that drove most boats back to shore and caused us to loose control of our rudder, but with a combined effort of the crew and fisherman we were able to correct the problem and bring home nice fish and very happy fishermen. We took the remainder of our fish to the cannery right down the way and exchanged them for canned smoked Salmon at a reasonable price that I am still savoring. Five stars for this outfit. read more

Coho Charters is a quality operation. The boats are clean, the equipment is good and the crew are all personable, experienced, locals who know the fishery well and have the patience with people and guidance that either you have it or you don't and they definitely have it. The day we fished for Sturgeon started slow but they stuck with it and kept the baits fresh until the fish started to bite. Some were too small to keep and some got a away but there were some very impressive fish landed and the scenery was beautiful. I really can't think of a better value for your money. These guys put in a good long trip and work hard at fishing and keeping their equipment and machinery running good. I highly recommend the Sturgeon fishing out of Ilwaco. It's a very calm and comfortable fishery with some of the largest fish available in Washington. I recommend you get there early and ask the deckhand where a good spot on the boat is... and always tip the deckhand. read more

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our fishing trip on Coho Mooch, on September 4th 2011, he was in a wheel chair, and the deck hand and captain were so accommodating to him. It was the best trip I was on, they were professionals and made sure everyone caught their limit and had a great time, Of course I caught the most fish but thats beside the point, the deck hand hustled to make sure everyone on the boat was well taken care of and the captain knew were the fish were. Couldn't ask for a better fishing experience, I had great pictures, the weather was perfect, I highly recommend Coho Charters and the crew, we are already planning our 2012 trip with Coho Charters. Don't bother scheduling with these clowns. I scheduled a trip for the last day of the season. It was a lot of work to get everything to work out for the 5 of us, including an international exchange student from China. Yes, a chance of a lifetime to catch a salmon. We drove for 5 hours, stayed the night at a local motel. We also called the Coho Charter number on Saturday, confirming our booking. We had talked to a number of people in the Ilwaco area and were told that Saturday was a rough seas day in the ocean, but fishing above and below the bridge was very good. We also relayed this information to the CC people. We were told to be at the office at 05:30, which we did. When we arrived, there was no one there for about 10 minutes. Finally, a mid-60's, florrid looking round man and a younger scruffy looking guy showed up. One of them was reeking of stale booze. They quickly, and rather rudely, informed us that "the seas were too rough" so they would not be taking us out....no apologies at all. They quickly left the premises. It is my opinion that these two were hung over from too much alcohol on Saturday night to take us out. We had checked out of our motel room, but we still stayed around the water until about 10am. There were plenty of other boats, including other charters out on the river, both above and below the Astoria bridge, .....but not us! Based on this experience, I think that Westport charters may be more reliable. Pass on these jokers! read more

I was espoused to go out on the last day of the season and our trip was cancelled. The wind was blowing about 20mph with gusts about 25mph. The crew of the boat told me that the ocean would be un-fishable because of the weather conditions and they gave me a choice of a refund or a gift certificate that is good forever. They were very nice and apologetic that we couldn't make it out. Even though I traveled to go fishing I was very happy that they didn't just take my money and head up the river to fish buoy 10. In those weather conditions I don't care where you fish it would not be pleasant. You can really tell this company is making the customer happy first and are not just in it to make money. Also, later that day I found out that a boat sunk off of Long Beach. So once again good call guys on canceling the trip. I will defiantly be using my gift certificate next year and i will be praying for good weather. Really nice people!! read more
