I found LBJC when I hit rock bottom after high school in 2009, my life was spiraling, I was abusing alcohol & drugs & found myself out of options with no place to rest my head. I was fortunate enough to enter the program with a high school diploma ready to pursue my career in culinary, growing up I always wanted to be a chef, I desperately needed structure because I was so ruthless & had such a hard time with authority, Job Corps shaped me into a decent young woman. The wait for culinary was ridiculous and because I desperately wanted to get my life together I chose a hard trade which was painting, "Boss" AKA Charles Monjaras was one of the most important instructors & highlights of my life at Job Corps, a father figure when I was ruining every other relationship I had at the time due to my addiction and selfishness, at the time I battled with peer pressure, so many kids come in here doing hard drugs it was hard to focus at times, a lot of kids didn't have a GED so I found myself having difficulty navigating trying so hard to find my people but at the same time I would find myself drinking & smoking often, something was always pulling me in the wrong direction, somehow I would always find myself working out, hanging inside the dorms to listen to music; make other friends, etc. after all I needed a place to stay, I wanted to make it worth it. I finished my trade in 6 months, got my drivers license, got my reading glasses and dental work done, they provided me with cash allowance, the food was decent, when I decided to enter the college program they allowed me another year to stay, provided me with a 1k scholarship for my first semester and I was able to get full financial aid. Because I was a woman in a hard trade and "Boss" saw something in me that I didn't see in myself, he flew me out to an all women's trade conference where they spoke about offering me a job in the trade, gave me my own hotel room, paid for everything, it was some of my first experiences in my young life life where I felt like I was doing something with myself. I got a part time job which they allowed me to come home later, you typically have a curfew here, the program can be really rigid but it's for the right reasons, they provided me with a bus pass and school supplies. This place changed my life, upon exiting I had a car that I bought myself, I moved into a small room I rented & continued college until I found a job and field that felt right which was child development, today I'm a behavioral therapist, I'm a running coach for adults that are in addiction recovery, & I also coach high school cross country. I'm writing this review because I had a dream about this place last night, although it was something extremely challenging to get through, this place absolutely changed my life & saved me from self sabotage & harm. I met some of my best friends during this time, we are so lucky that we get to talk about this place and smile. What an experience, been through it all here. Graduated Class of 2000 in BAM, instructor then was Rick Munger, no one measures up to that guy. Everyone was cool, I stayed on campus, even our Dorm supervisor "Shogun" was strict but cool. I understand peoples complaints but what you expect from this place, they pay you to get your life together and prep you for a career. It aint easy or supposed to be fun but I do appreciate what I went through to be a better man here. Just push through it, its worth it-stay focused. read more

I would say that this place has a lot of good advantages especially depending on where you are when it comes to life. It can help with a job or completing high school and I say especially it's good because it's free but the only thing I will say that is bad about Job Corps is the following items. One mainly be that when certain things happen like someone getting harassed or an accident occurs like someone almost dying or fights or inappropriate things with staff or just in the center in general job corps like to sweep it "under the rug" and take no action in it and I believe that mainly students would like to fight or argue about these horrible issues but are threatened with being kicked out if they decided to stand up in what's right. But also I would say for the most part all staff is good besides those here and there had staff that abuse their power. There are multiple but one I would want to shout out and is known for this is a lady named Ms. Mackenzie she is someone who abuses her power and talks bad about students behind their backs in front of other students and is just an overall honestly horrible person. She will only act correctly when her boss is in front of her then all of a sudden she is the most caring person when it comes to students she's honestly 2 faced the best way I can say it. To conclude Job Corps was a good/bad experience it is different for everyone but I just say it could be a really good alternative if you need help just keep your eyes on the staff and watch yourself and maybe change will happen. I signed to go job Corp early 2019. I was finally accepted in July. Also I was staying in Charlotte , NC so when they called I left and went straight to job Corp to change my life so I thought. My first week was horrible my teacher Ms.Molina did not know spoken English well - stutter over all her words , the cafeteria food was rushed or overcooked. The dorms where horrible messy females and mean older women staff who make it hard for you over everything. They don't do good investigations, have no cameras and are childish listen to her/she say with no evidence. I was kicked out of job Corp because a girl who said I bumped into her , when I had already been reporting this girl 3 times prior and she was already moved out of the dorm we shared for starting problems. Because I was bigger , have a face tattoo & older I was accused of making trouble. So when McKenzie and Mrs.Ellis kicked me out over the incident, they never called my phone since to say I could come back or anything & I never ever heard from job Corp again not even a letter. They didn't even help me pay for my travel back to Charlotte,NC I was stranded in long beach for 2 days before my family could help me. This place was very discriminating and I was so hurt I wasted my time trying to better my life.... read more

Long beach Job Corps is a very great program. This program has free food, housing,job placement,workbase and free college program. They also believe in giving everyone there best chance and do all they can to help you when you need it. I am currently living here and taking advantage of as many trades as I can. In as little as one year, you leave with a high school diploma or GED, preliminary certifications in HIPAA, OSHA, CPR & First-Aid, as well as a CA driver's license, work based learning internship, and DOL trade certification & license in your choice of industry: healthcare, construction, or automotive. You can even position yourself to join the US military. All on top of free room and board, meals, uniforms, books, trips, sports, activities, fitness center, library, computer lab, wifi access, medical, dental, & optometry services, career coaches, job placement, 24/7 staff counseling & support, personal success team, credentialed instructors, caring advisors, evening electives, leadership training, ambassador programs, community resources, service learning, advanced trade specializations; even a college degree! All for FREE! The only catch is that you change the course of your life & the lives of your loved ones by becoming a success! I wish I knew about this program when I was starting-out. I went to Job Corps 08 Thu 2010 and it was a great experience. I graduated 2010 and in all seriousness its not that hard. Just do your work and remember why you are there. Alot of young people lose focus while in job corps, and the reasons are their own. I lost focus many times because i didn't know what i wanted out of life and i liked to drink allot. I read some reviews and people are mad because they smoke weed and tested positive for it while attending Job Corps. Come on in all seriousness if you are going to continue smoking be smart about it. I was never a weed smoker but i sure liked to drink. I was smart about it though I didn't go to class drunk i didn't drink on campus even though i was 21 at the time. The reason why i didn't is because i know the penalty if i got caught. So stop feeling sorry for yourself because you know what would happen if you got caught up. Job Corps offer drug classes to help you out with your problems they don't just kick you out if you test positive the first time and the same goes for drinkers. read more
