Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art with roots in Japanese sword arts and empty handed techniques. Its techniques emphasize softness, relaxation, body mechanics, posture, flexibility, stability, peaceful conflict resolution, force redirection, and places a lot of focus on teaching the ability to fall safely. It can be practiced fast and aerobic or slow and mindful, allowing students to work at their own pace. The curriculum includes wrist and joint locks, and is one of the few that include sword-work and short-staff, practiced with a partner in a cooperative setting.
For those who enjoy Japanese culture, Aikido observes a lot of customs and traditions (our head instructor is Japanese, after all~)
If you were looking to try something new, make some friends, learn a fun skill or two, and get in shape all at once, feel free to come to watch or try any of our classes! (No appointment necessary--just walk in!)
History
Established in 1964.
Founded by Head Instructor Edward Hagihara, 8th Dan Shihan, it has been in continuous operation for more than 55 years. The dojo was in various locations until 2012, when it settled in its permanent home in Bay Shore, NY. Now under the management of Adam Pilipshen, 5th Dan Shidoin with the guidance of Hagihara-shihan.
Meet the Manager: Adam P.
Adam developed an interest in martial arts early on in his life. He began formally practicing martial arts at the age of 16 with the study of Jiu-jitsu, which quickly changed into an interest in Aikido. At the age of 19 he began training with Hagihara Shihan and shortly thereafter became one of only two uchi deshi (apprentice) ever to serve under Sensei. Training intensively and never missing a day of practice, Adam became Hagihara Sensei's fastest promoted student. Today, Adam serves as the Dojocho of the Long Island Aikikai and oversees all aspects of the organization. Despite his relatively young age, Adam is a 5th degree black belt as well as a recognized member of the United States Aikido Federation's teaching staff.
