Coming here is always a memorable experience. Never very crowded which I appreciate. When it comes to the food, I know when I come here I will taste tastes I've never tasted before haha. It's a real dinning experience. The service is good, to be picky this is one area they could improve to really go to the next level.

The menu seems to be all over the place. I wouldn't call the cuisine any particular genre since there were items that categorically fall under "Mediterranean" as well as "Asian-fusion". Two things in particular that didn't make sense to me. The tofu on the Mediterranean bowl. Tofu marinated in soy sauce is not what comes to mind when I'm thinking of any country in the Mediterranean. Also, the tasting menu has an option for an entree choice of veal shank. I was informed there would be an upcharge since it's a pricier menu item, which is totally acceptable. What I was not prepared for was a giant cut of meat (it had to have been 10oz or more) with a huge bone still attached. The portion did not fit with a tasting menu. Luckily, my husband has the appetite of a small horse so he finished it.

I am a pescatarian athend the menu had some interesting fish and seafood items. I got there on a weekday during happy hour and sat at the bar. Since it was half off for happy hour I started with the Smoked Trout Dip which was one of the items I really wanted to try. The dip came out really quickly and was a very nice looking plate, crostini and cucumber slices were nicely arranged around the scoop of dip covered with crushed nuts. The dip was decent, although flavors were a bit muted; I was hoping for more of the smoke flavor and having the trout make a bigger impact. Not bad, but not an item I would order again. Next up I tried the Smoked Salmon Poutine. A good sized portion of sweet potato fries topped with a generous amount of house smoked salmon, feta cheese and creme fraiche sauce. All of the ingredients were high quality and well prepared, however the dish didn't quite land as poutine since all of the elements other than the fries were served cold which muted the flavors and meant that the cheese didn't melt. This dish missed all of the hardiness and warmth that I associate with poutine. I came to Smoke on the Water hoping for big flavors and while the food was good and they used quality ingredients I just found the flavors to be a bit mild an underwhelming for me. A bit of a disappointment, of course your experience may vary, especially if you are having the actual BBQ.

I'm usually somewhat hesitant to eat fish in a landlocked state, but I gave it a go once I saw the long line of people that overflowed from the entrance of Coleman's. All of these West Virginians standing in a queue can't be wrong, right? The restaurant is tiny and is a to-go joint only. It's located in Centre Market in downtown Wheeling, so once you get your food, you can wander around the market to find a table, or split and take your food elsewhere. Once you enter Coleman's, you'll see two lines: one is just for basic orders, like sandwiches, and the other one is for special orders. But you can order basic things in the special line, I think? I don't know -- I just got in the first line I saw and ordered a fish sandwich. There were a lot of locals there who looked like they knew what they were doing. It would be wise to ask someone what to do, if you're unsure. The fish sandwich is literally just a big piece of breaded and fried white fish between two pieces of white bread. If you want anything else -- sauce, coleslaw -- you need to order it separately. But I didn't know what I was doing, so I just got the dry sandwich by itself. If I were to do it again, I'd order the deluxe fish sandwich, which comes with "sauce" (I have no idea what kind of sauce because Coleman's doesn't feel the need to disclose that information on its menu), and then I'd order coleslaw to add to the sandwich. The fish? It was excellent. Nicely fried but not greasy at all. The line was long but moved pretty quickly. While I was in line, I heard other people repeatedly order egg rolls, so of course I had to get one. It turns out that the egg rolls here are just egg rolls and nothing special -- like the kind you get at Costco. But! They only cost a buck fifty, so if you're in need of a cheap snack, there you go. You can buy live lobsters here, too. They're in a tank. While I was waiting for my order, I chatted with a woman who was super excited about the lobsters in the tank, and kept telling me that she just wanted to pet them. "I think you can only buy those lobsters to eat," I told her. But she just wanted to stick her hand in the tank and pet the lobsters, and asked the people behind the counter if she could pay them money to pet the lobsters. They said no. I am starting to really like West Virginia.
