My dish. Meatballs, stuff mushrooms, and fish salad
    Richard A.

Came here for a fundraiser and the food was good. The meatballs were clearly homemade and good. They had a fish salad that was very good. The stuff mushrooms had plenty of flavor and the coconut shrimp was fried but not greasy. They have a nice private room on the right side of the main entrance with tables set up and a connecting room to where the food was. The staff was friendly and helpful. There were local customers eating at the and their small dining room. They have outdoor seating and plenty of parking.

Two tocos a full meal, look at melded cheese on the top of the torta, then your choice of chicken, steak, beef, or chile. A real bargin'.

As always just a pleasant restaurant with and great menu; my wife and I often stop for their tocos; there is a choice of four good size tocos chicken, chile, beef, and steak, all over the top in goodness. We generally have two tocos apiece which are a good size meal and at a bargain price of $4.00 a toco that's $8.00 for a full meal.

We live close by but have never been here. We decided to try it on a friday, late afternoon for an early dinner. We had about an hour to spend, so hoped it would be quick. We walked in and it was very quiet. No one behind the bar or seating walk ins. A few people were at a table playing keno. We sat ourselves and waited. Seeing no one for a bit, we were thinking it may have been an mistake to stop in. We decided to head to the diner instead. As we began to walk out, some came over and stopped us. She apologized saying she was in back printing up the specials menu. We sat down and ordered. Bella, seemed to be the only one working outside of the kitchen. Being that is was early before the dinner rush, we let it go. She was bartender and keno payout person, as well as server. Our food didn't take long. We had ordered steak and cheese egg rolls, to compare to a favorite at another restaurant. They were delicious! Crispy and cheesy. Definitely worth it. Bella continued to be very pleasant and timely with bringing our food. My husband got a tuna melt. It came with bacon and orange slices on top. He was happy with it. I got the chicken cesar wrap. It was very fresh and tasty! The chicken was shredded, juicy, and delicious. Their fresh cut fries were really good, too! Everything was reasonably priced. Lots of options. Despite us nearly walking out, Bella was awesome, and we are glad we stayed. We were done un plenty of time to get where we were going! Also seemed to have small party rooms and an outdoor patio. We'll be back!

I originally planned to sit at the bar since I was dining solo, but it was packed for happy hour (always a good sign). I ended up in the dining room instead, and honestly, it worked out great. Service was quick and attentive from the start. My server, Christina, checked in on me several times without being overbearing, and I really appreciated how often my water was refilled especially since I skipped alcohol this visit. For food, I went all in: a dozen oysters, bang bang shrimp bao buns, and salmon sushi rolls. I finished with the crème brûlée cheesecake (which I already knew I loved from their sister restaurant). Standouts for me were the oysters, the bao buns, and that cheesecake absolutely delicious. The sushi rolls were fresh and flavorful, just a bit oversized for that perfect bite. Overall, a great experience with solid food and attentive service. I'll definitely be back maybe next time I'll snag a bar seat!

Every single course was homemade and bursting with flavor, but the Hungarian Paprikash completely stole the show. The chicken literally melted in your mouth, and the rich, velvety paprika sauce was so incredible you'll be thinking about it long after you leave. And don't even think about skipping dessert! The Vlad the Impaler dessert arrived dramatically flaming like Dracula himself, and the kids were completely captivated. It wasn't just a show, it was absolutely delicious and one of the most memorable desserts we've ever had. If you're looking for a dining experience with exceptional service, that's as unforgettable as the food itself, this is it. We can't wait to come back!

Between Frank Pepe's and BAR, my friend, a Yale student, prefers the latter, and as a mere tourist,…read moreI deferred the decision to her. Man, so glad I did. We arrived on a Monday around peak dinner time, but there was essentially no wait (apparently uncommon according to my friend -- just a delightful consequence of dining at a college town during the summer). We split a medium pizza (1/2 elote mexican street corn and 1/2 bbq brisket), proving to be more than enough for two plus a more than ample amount of leftovers. Recently, I've gravitated toward thinner pizzas, a far cry from the typical Detroit (foccacia-esque) style pizzas I used to prefer, and BAR's pizza is akin to a flatbread yet very thin, another fallen angel to the GLP's. The undercarriage boasts a brilliant crust, almost cracker-like. However, it should be noted that the pizza is indulgent all the same. The elote pizza is quite possibly the most memorable, unique pizza I've ever had; it arrives almost crimson-red with a generous layer of corn and takis atop. It's still incredibly well balanced despite the hodgepodge of varied toppings. It's hard to pick a favorite between this and the bbq brisket though; while one is incredibly unique the other is simply sumptuous, nothing pedestrian about either of the two. The service is also impeccable, almost rivaling that of southern hospitality. I always thought Californians were friendly but something is in the air every time I visit New Haven. Incredible!

Based on a recommendation, four friends and I visited for an earlier dinner on Cinco de Mayo (yes,…read morewrong type of cuisine, but we were in town and this restaurant was on our list.) BAR is an interesting restaurant: open air, picnic tables, open space, paper plates, no utensils unless you ask for them, etc. We were greeted right away by a less than friendly waiter who seemed peeved we didn't have a drink to order right away. Strike one. After a few minutes, everyone put their drink order in and I asked if the bartender could make me a mojito since it wasn't on the menu. The waiter said yes, so I waited. Then came the mojito. It was the worst "mojito" I've tasted in my life. I'm not one to send a drink back because of an "I don't taste any alcohol" excuse, but this was BAD. It tasted like margarita mix with lime and mint sprigs thrown in. It was absolutely terrible. When I double checked with the waiter if the drink was an original mojito he simply said yes, not "is something wrong with the drink?" or "would you like to send it back?" The drink was so bad I told him I couldn't drink it. He was peeved again. Strike two. I asked for a soft drink instead and the soda was flat (strike 3), but at this point I just needed something to drink... because who wants to have water with their pizza? Then came the time to make a dinner choice. My mission was to try the mashed potato pizza. It was hands down AMAZING!! Mashed potatoes and bacon on a pizza. Yes, please!! This was the only saving grace from my experience. I would return to BAR again if only for that pizza! Two of my friends had the clam pizza and the pepperoni/mushroom. Both enjoyed their own! Warming: New Haven pizza is thin crust. I got two meals out of a small, so if you visit with a group, consider ordering a few small pizzas so you can taste a few. I would've given BAR 4 or 5 stars, but the unpleasant waiter, the "mojito," and the flat sofa made for a trifecta, so I'm giving my visit 3 stars. If I find myself in New Haven again, I'll be back! Hopefully my next update will be 5 stars!
