Ok so I don't even live in Manhattan Beach anymore and was in town visiting old friends when I decided on a whim to try and get new glasses before I had to leave. I walked in on a Saturday with a girlfriend and the woman who helped me picked out the frames I ended up loving on first try. Best shape for my face, best color - you name it. I explained I had to fly back east the upcoming Friday so they made me an appointment for Monday morning. Doc? Awesome!!! Aside from being a super thorough exam he took the time to explain different options for my slightly complicated vision issues. I mean I have always known I had 1 eye that's practically half blind and one good eye but with age my eye issues are even more complicated. He took twice the normal time, tried out different options and didn't try to "sell me" on more expensive - he just wanted me to understand and decide what I was the best choice for me at this time. I'm not working so cost was an issue and he helped me choose reading glasses - which I need for computer work and - well reading. Oh and bonus - he's just super funny as well! They promised my glasses by late day Thursday - but put a rush on them so I got them early afternoon Wednesday! My only issue is they are so cute I want to wear them all the time but as they are for reading looking distance makes me dizzy - but full disclosure Doc had fully explained that would happen before I ordered so that's just me being bummed my vision is so whack. One of my girlfriends made an appointment with him right there - and another plans to. I will be visiting next time I am in town for sure! Thanks!!!! read more

Dr. Silverman is great! I really enjoyed his sense of humor and easy to understand explanation of what was going on with my vision and his staff is warm and welcoming as well as efficient. I fell in love with a pair of glasses they no longer carried and they went out of their way to get in touch with the sales representative and made sure I got the glasses I wanted! I've held off on writing this review simply because I dislike writing bad reviews .... But my trip to Look Optometry has been on my mind since I visited them first . Here goes .... I pay for my VSP insurance out of pocket, just want to put that out there . I found Look on the VSP website, along with several others. Look's reviews rubbed me right plus it was in Manhattan Beach (I love MB). My appointment was on a Saturday. I walked in , I was greeted and "checked in". I waited for about 20 minutes before Dr. Silverman got to me. So I was able to see how they (unfortunately , I do not remember the male and female employee's names up front) interacted with customers. People came in , askin about frames... One lady tried on several frames. The female Look employee helped this lady to no end . Opening several cabinets for her to try on frames , suggested some frames , gave her opinion on the look ...... She was doing exactly what I expected. The male employee was helping a gentlemen with adjusting his frames, tightening the same screws over and over again .... Whatever the customer needed. Ok, so Dr. Silverman calls me back and here is how the convo goes .... "hi, I'm dr. Silverman, it's good to know you." Me: :) hi, likewise Doctor. Him: "So uhhh, is this the Obama care you have here ?" :/ Why does that even matter ??? After I explained to him that it was insurance I paid for he went on to say I was basically wasting my money on something I could get for free. We get past that and do the eye exam . Then he tells me that the female employee will give me my prescription or help me pick out frames if I want to purchase them there . He passes me off to her , she looks at my chart and says "Oh, we have a $99 package for you". I ask what it is and she says it includes the frame and the lens , it's a package for my type of insurance. She takes me over to a drawer, pulls it out and says "ok, this what we have to choose from for our $99 package" My issue , why was I only limited to the $99 package ? Why didn't she suggests frames for me? Why didn't she help me pick out a frame ? My only assumption .... They were under the impression that I had free insurance , so I didn't have money to spend . They treated me completely different compared to other customers. I was never offered anything outside of that crappy $99 drawer. I probably should have asked but I shouldn't have to ask for customer service . read more

Horrible experience on every level. Dr. Silverman was pleasant, but overly so. He was too chatty about things not related to eyes and asked me why I had come in. I told him I wanted prescription sunglasses. He examined my eyes and did a thorough exam. He asked me again why I had come in that day. I told him again; prescription sunglasses. He finished up the exam and believe it or not, asked me one more time what the purpose for my visit was. What??? In the exam room there are TV monitors that show what's going on in the room outside which housed the glasses. I felt a bit uncomfortable as my family was out there waiting for me and I felt like he was paranoid about getting ripped off. The security was over the top for Manhattan Beach. He walked out of the room at one point for something as well, which I felt was unprofessional. The exam room was the size of a bedroom and not welcoming at all. The "reception area" doubles as a storage area and has boxes overflowing with files. It's a mess. The glasses are all locked in glass cabinets and every time you want to try a pair on, they have to unlock the case, hand them to you and lock them again. There was no one else in the store but my boyfriend, my kids and me and we don't fit the stereotypical profile of thieves. At least I don't think we do. Hmmm. A man by the name of Johnnie helped find a pair of frames. I told him my budget was under $120 and proceeded to help me find a nice pair. The first pair he took out was great, but $320. I reminded him of my price range and he found another pair. This one was $250. I had to remind him AGAIN. Then after about 20 minutes I asked him if I could try on a pair w/clear lenses and have sunglasses put in and he said that I told him I only wanted to try on the sunglasses they had. I said I never said that and he started arguing with me. I was so angry at the point but figured that I had already spent 45 minutes looking at glasses that I should just continue. I finally found a pair that I liked that was in my price range when he told me that they were $325!!! It was ridiculous. He had to leave to take a phone call and asked a woman who worked there to help me find a pair. She had no idea what the pricing was on anything and had to keep interrupting Johnnie to ask him prices. It was a total joke. I finally found a pair and filled out the paper work. I was told they'd be ready in a week. I picked them up, went home and used them the next day. They weren't right and I had to keep my book at a a specific distance to be able to read. If it was one inch too far or too close I couldn't see properly. I took them back and there was a new guy who was great. He took my glasses and looked at the prescription. He told me that they were ordered incorrectly. The lenses were flipped. I turned the glasses around and sure enough, they worked great. So he took them back and said they'd be ready in 4 days. 7 days later I called to find out what happened to my glasses and the woman said she'd have to check. She called me back 30 minutes later to say they'd be in in 3 hours. No one ever called me to let me know they were ready. I was peeved that I had to do all the checking. When I went to pick them up, my friend Johnnie was there. He asked what the problem was and when I said they were ordered wrong, he looked at the paper and said, "Oh, the lab messed them up." I said, no, not the lab, you ordered them wrong. He said, "Oh, yeah, the Dr. ordered them backwards." I called him out on it and inferred that he couldn't accept the blame and simply apologize. It was the worst experience since Verizon. Don't get me started. read more

I've been coming here for a little over 2 years and I absolutely love it. They have very nice and friendly staff, a clean office and Dr. Silverman is the best optometrist I've ever met. I've been wearing eyeglasses for 6 years and decided to step into the "contact lens" world today. Dr. Silverman was super cool and helped me put the contacts in to feel them out and took them out for me. He washed his hands before he inserted the contacts AND after when I was ready for him to remove them. He's also SUPER smart and friendly. He really tries to get to know his patients and he ensures that each patient walks out happy and pleased with their experience here. I live no where near Manhattan Beach but I'm willing to make the trip down there at least once a year just to keep Look! Optometry as my optometrist office! read more

STAY AWAY!!!! There are numerous optometry shops in Downtown Manhattan Beach DONT CHOOSE THIS ONE! I have searching for a specific pair of sunglasses for about a week now. I saw last year at Macy's and they no longer carry them. Nor does the sunglasses hut or my own optometrist. So I started to look around at the local stores thinking "hey worth a shot right". I am looking and looking and come to find out, most places dont carry Persol's anymore but........ Look Optometry did and WOW was I excited because not only did they still carry Persol's but they also had my dream style!! (Mind you these had eye glass lenses not sunglass lenses) I then proceeded to ask the lady and Dr Silverman for the style number and she told me that she could tuck this pair away for me and create a file for me to write the information in but "unfortunately she couldn't write it down and give it to me". I WAS FLOORED. Here I am 20 stores later and I have finally found and am he has the audacity to tell me I cant have the style number when he cant even provide me with them for purchase? Does that make sense to anyone?! I would have to say this is a very poor "policy" on your end Dr Silverman! From one Manhattan Beach resident to another (yes the Dr lives in MB!) So I have been going here for about 3 years because my insurance does not cover Manhattan vision anymore. Dr. Silverman was great never had an issue so thats why I gave it 2 stars. The male assistant not so much. Always a little rude. Trying to get me to buy glasses out of my price range. Whatever. SO I go in just to reorder my contacts. I tell him I have run out and he says rudely, "UGH! I never understand you people. Why you always wait to the last minute to order your contacts." I don't need the rudeness. I stopped into Look! today to try to quickly schedule an appointment. There was no one in the store and the receptionist started talking to me---not overly friendly but totally fine. Then, in walks a customer and she STOPS helping me and starts assisting the other customer. Not ok. The reviews on here that say they're just after your money are completely correct. This is the vibe that I got from them when I first went in here (When I went I had vision insurance and now I don't). I just went in for an exam because I needed new glasses and a prescription for new contacts so I could get a refill. I was getting talked into all these types of vision correction/LASIK/etc. No thanks, I just need more contacts. Once I came out, the person working in the front kept adding all these extras onto my bill. "Oh, you'll want these types of lenses on your glasses and this and this and this..." until the bill came out to $1,000. And that was AFTER my insurance. Excuse me, no thank you. I went through and took off everything she unnecessarily added on and dropped my total to $250. Just the glasses & exams, please. I order my contacts through 1-800 and I'm pretty sure they were upset I wasn't ordering through them. When I gave 1-800 my script, turns out Dr. approved me for the most expensive one-a-day contacts which were $400/box. Once again, no thanks. Have been wearing Acuvue Oasis with Hydraclear for years & I am not looking to change. I felt so uncomfortable here while they were trying to upsell me on glasses and contacts. I tried to order contacts through Costco & my prescription wasn't released by LOOK! because my script expires at the end of this month. They only gave me a one year script AND my expiration is almost a month away. When I used Wal Mart Vision, I could order contacts up to a day before my script expired and they gave me a two year script instead of one. They're just looking for more money from an exam and another chance to upsell LASIK and expensive contacts. I'm going to Costco or Wal Mart from now on, esp. since I don't have vision insurance anymore. All this place really cares about is money & you can save so much going elsewhere. read more

I walked in to the office for a peek at frames and they had a great selection. I decided to book an appointment, which was a breeze. The office assistant was courteous and thorough. I was seen within a few minutes of walking in. Dr. Silverman is very easy going, friendly, and did a thorough exam. He discovered that I need a pair for seeing at a distance and nighttime driving. I made a mess after trying on about 50 frames.. but luckily the assistant was extremely patient and helpful. Lol I finally got a pair of frames I love! I met Lester Silverman at a seminar. We chatted and I told him I needed an eye exam. He gave me his card and 2 months later I finally made an appointment. This might sound weird but it was a FABULOUS eye exam. It was very thorough and Dr. Silverman spent all the time that was necessary with me. I told him money was tight and we discussed the options. I ended up ordering some glasses from this location and they are awesome. I have taken both my kids to "Look" (Manhattan Beach). Dr. Silverman was very thorough, knowledgeable, and friendly. My 5 year old had an eye exam and Dr. Silverman handled him well. I went to see Dr. Silverman last Friday, for the first time under our VSP insurance plan. Both Dr. Les and his office assistant, Aracelli were most gracious, highly professional, kindly, friendly and most importantly, most knowledgeable in their field. Best eye doctor I've had in 22 years. In fact just after my appointment the other day I was laughing that I cannot remember one single previous optometrist I used in my life! Dr. Silverman explains EVERYTHING even if you do not ask, gives suggestions trying to help you save money, has a great sense of humor, can talk about education, health, sports, and a variety of other topics too. It is like visiting an old friend. I am so impressed that he remembers details about my life and always asks for updates on the following visits despite the length of time that passes. I also was shocked that after moving here, the first time I passed him on the street walking he knew my name and started a conversation! I was not expecting him to remember me after one visit! He really is a people person and cares. Ordering contacts is simple, they arrive fast, and they contact you immediately. Office always seems to have the newest equipment, and Doc is knowledgeable on the latest offerings in contacts and glasses. This review is less about Dr. Silverman as an optometrist and more about his incessant questions on the phone about "how did we get down there" and "how did we find his office" even after I told him my daughter attended school in the area. Either he didn't know what to say to us or his patients are not very diverse. When my daughter was examined by him he continued with the same line of questioning with her. Although she liked her glasses and the service was quick. The uncomfortable feelings she has about her experience is the reason we will not return or ever refer others. read more

I went in for a standard eye checkup and picked this place entirely because it was walking distance from my house. Dr. Silverman was friendly and when I was curious about the tests he was doing, he explained each one and how he used them. My checkup showed that I was in the marginal category for needing glasses, and he did not push me to get them - I appreciated this. Office and exam room are small and might be uncomfortable for someone with claustrophobia - anybody else I would unhesitatingly recommend to see Dr. Silverman. read more
