It's a little hard to find if you're not sure where to look, but it's basically just past the bagel shop if you're coming from the south, up a flight of stairs above some bar. Pretty good selection of curated yarn brands. No accessibility in terms of getting to (stairs and no elevator) or around the store itself. I have also been turned off by the lack of customer service each time I go. Several staff members will be seated and uninterested or unhelpful when you ask a question even for a specific product. One of the best yarn shops in DC, they have a really diverse array of high quality yarns. Of course, when you shop at this level of premium (often imported) yarns, the price point is a bit steep, but that's just the truth of paying fairly for unique animal based yarns. If you're in a store like this for yarn it is a great indication of how you want to expand your horizons as a fiber artist because sourcing is a large component we can oversee since conglomerate yarn is so readily accessible. Big industry yarn its not always the best option to support the field as a whole or for wearing. If you are a beginner fiber artist, just go and see the splendor of seeing this many coveted yarns in one place. I would characterize their selections as deeply saturated, vibrant, textured, and elaborates on different shades and tints of a single color (which gets serious when you are looking for something specific). All their employees are trained to help guide you throughout the maker's process. I've been here twice in an effort to build a relationship with what would be my LYS in this area. The staff have been polite but terse, despite opportunities to help or be welcoming when we mentioned we were new to the area, wanted to discover a LYS, asked about knitting circles, and then shopped for buttons for projects that I'd brought with me. My main disappointment: The staff really, really were not helpful or friendly. It's a local yarn store, and I feel lucky to be able to shop in person for knitting supplies. However, when the staff really don't seem to want to interact with you, it's a let down. Maybe I've been spoiled by other local craft stores that truly go above and beyond on service. At this store, I wouldn't say I was made to feel /un/comfortable, but I certainly wasn't made to feel comfortable either. For me, the quality of service was comparable to shopping online. Here are some concrete examples: 1. On our first visit, we greet the front desk staff, and my husband mentions that we're excited to have a LYS in our community and were excited to start visiting the space. He asked if they had any knitting circles or community events. The staff answered yes, you can check our website. Polite, but terse. ...Yes, we /can/ check the website, but we came in person for a reason. 2. On our second visit, I approached the front desk with some buttons I was hoping to purchase and asked if all of the buttons in the tube represented their entire stock (the tubes on display were often empty or only had a few buttons inside). She said yes. I explained that I was asking because I needed more for my project than were in the tube, to which she shrugged and said that was all that was available. She gave no indication that they might order more (given the low stock) or could order more, nor did she engage in a conversation about what else they had in stock that might work for my project or anything of the sort. My experience was that she had no interest in the sale or helping me. I returned to the button selection by myself to look in vain for /any/ tube of buttons that contained 7 buttons. While doing this, I heard the clerk engage in a conversation with a couple who was leaving, asking what project the customer was working on, complementing the craftwork and encouraging them to keep at it (the customer spoke modestly about their skills). Having heard this warm engagement from the clerk with the other customer, I plucked up my courage to approach the desk again, asking if I could use something to measure the size of the button I had selected (there was no label indicating the size), hoping it might be an opportunity to get some help or some conversation from the clerk. While she allowed me to use a ruler, she again didn't appear to see any opportunity to engage or help me with the shopping experience. I left with nothing both times despite being interested. It's a cute LYS. I hope they have what you're looking for and you can locate it yourself, because I wouldn't say the staff are particularly friendly or helpful. read more

From the beautiful displays, books, great selection of yarn, and the helpful staff, you'll probably find what you need here. They have a nice variety of yarn weights and plenty of room to work on project by yourself or with a group. (Though it is hard to spot, I walked by it twice before I realized it was there on the 2nd story.) I had briefly visited in 2014, the last time I was in DC. Though very cute and inviting, this place is extremely expensive. The same yarn can be purchased on line at a fraction of the cost. Not everything is about cost, however. My son bought me a gift certificate which I did not receive for many weeks, even though I live in the same city. When I got something in the mail from Looped I assumed it was an advertisement as there was no note and a card with their name on it had $150 handwritten on the back which did not alert me to it being a valid anything. My son had not told me that my gift certificate was coming from this store. I almost threw the whole thing out, but out of laziness left it in my knitting bag. When I finally realized days later that it was, in fact, a gift certificate (my son had told me that he had sent me something from a DC) store, I called the store to express my annoyance. NO NOTE!!! A HAND WRITTEN AMOUNT ON A CARD!!! Wow. I guess they never heard of fraud. Anyhow, I eventually spoke with the owner and she is one of the nastiest retailers I have ever dealt with: nothing was their fault; it was all mine. I asked her to send me a new, official, gift card which she never did. Shortly after that COVID hit our country and I obviously have not been in. I will at some point, if they survive this pandemic, go and buy whatever I can with my $150 card, probably enough to make a toddler sweater along with needles, etc.. One does not mind spending money if doing so is treat, but to have to deal with the kind of hostility I got from the owner is beyond the pale. read more

I've always wanted to learn how to knit, and this year, I decided to make it happen. I looked for classes in the DC area, and this came up in a lot of my searches. I decided to give it a go and booked a 2-parter class for beginning knitters. I honestly thought I would just fail, but the teacher was so good. She somehow made knitting seem incredibly easy. We earned the garter and purl stitches and knits some practice swatches together. She left time at the end for us to ask questions. They also sell a lot fo great quality yarn. I ordered a few cheap skeins off of amazon to practice, but when I was ready to actually make something for my friend's baby, I went back to Looped Yarn Works to buy the yarn. The staff helped me find what I was looking for and even taught me how to use the yarn winder thing (I'm sure it has a name). Every time I've been in there, there is a group of knitters just hanging out and knitting with each other. It is a great community store, and I highly recommend it as a great place to go for those just getting into knitting like myself. read more

Elizabeth spent alot of time with me, with useful guidance on adjustments for proper fit (sweater surgery!) of a finished yoke sweater. The shop was a little tricky to find at first since it's on the second floor of a little building but it's actually really fun to find the door to the staircase and follow it up to the shop, it feels like a secret club! Once inside, the 2 women at the counter were SO FRIENDLY! They gave me a brief tour and let me do my thing, there were 2 rooms full of yarn! It was very hard to decide what to pick haha but I loved every minute of it. In the front room there was a knitting circle going on, they have a cute little sitting room set up for customers to hang out and knit. Once I finished my shopping, both girls at the counter were very engaging and kind, they were starting up a great conversation and making you feel at home. Looped Yarn Works is a small store but really has a huge variety of yarn. Everything from extra fine lace to huge bundles of Rasta. They carry a lot of big name brands as well as some smaller local brands. A good mix in my opinion. The buyer has a great eye for color, some of my favorite hanks have come from here. They have a tendency to only carry 1-3 hanks of each color, so it can be difficult to find enough if you're working on a larger project. I'm most pleased with their needle selection. They carry bamboo, carbon, and metal Chiagoos, though no sock sized circular needles. They've got metal Addis as well. They also have interesting notions beyond the basic Takumi stuff you can find anywhere. All in all, a great local yarn store with a fantastic location. read more

Karen was so helpful -- I was able to share a photo of the color scheme I was planning on for my next knit, and she pulled out a few different options of yarn for me + sent me a picture and the name of the colorways so I could google them online myself. I'm compiling a list that's titled "You know you're closer to your middle age than your teens when ..." this place immediately reminded me of the list. I love this shop, it's a lovely spot, with beautiful yarns (colors! shapes!) and even cool and funky ladies working there. This convinced me that I don't need to feel like Miss Marple just because I've started to dabble in the yarnier arts. The ladies were helpful and very nice, despite the fact that I asked the usual newbie questions. So nice that I signed up for a three-session class. Definitely on the smaller side of merchandise in local yarn stores I've seen, which is understandable due to the size of the store. I kind of liked that their shelves weren't stuffed to the brim as it was a lot easier to pull skeins out and check them out without knocking over the stuff. Also I like that they have a closet of sale merchandise. The clerk was SO friendly and nice, which I don't always get in yarn stores due to my age (younger, especially for a knitter). I came pretty much to only get stitch markers, but enjoyed my time there so much that I bought a skein of sock yarn. They definitely have more unique brands that I haven't seen before, but also carry some ole' reliables like Malabrigo and Berroco. Fantastic vibes! read more

Looped has a lot of promise. It's a bright, cute space and the owner clearly wants to make a success of it. They have some neat items stocked and carry some good brands that are less common amongst the stores in this area. However - they need to do a better job selecting which yarns to stock. I'm a bit crazy about yarn - my monthly yarn budget is insane, I've worked for LYSes in the past and I know a ton about each yarn produced by the manufacturers they carry. They're missing some good workhorse yarns and stocking some rather odd things instead. Be Sweet, for instance, has some great basic mohair that is lovely, but instead of stocking it, they're stocking the bobble yarn that's got more in common with Fun Fur than it ought to - and it costs a lot more per skein, too. If they don't have a yarn consultant, they need one, and if they have one, they need to listen to him/her a bit more. The owner also needs to get her face more under control, unfortunately. It always cracks me up when I walk up to an LYS register with my purchases, only to see the clerk's eyes bulge out in an "I didn't expect YOU to buy THAT" sort of way. I do look very young, and I know it surprises people when I lay out hundreds of bucks after they make the mistaken assumption that I'm a teenager. However, it would be nice to not see that surprise quite so out in the open as I'm being rung up. I'm picky about yarn shops, so I want to add that despite my criticisms, it is a truly wonderful thing that this shop has come to DC. It's so clear that the staff care and want to do a good job. Compared to the other shops in the city proper especially, Looped shines. read more

A few things I don't really like about Looped Yarn. Classes are so much geared towards learning to make 1 pattern. It's so often that I don't want to make that specific pattern. I wish they were more geared to learning techniques (that can be used for many more projects after that), rather than learning one pattern. The exception of course is the learn to knit, but I don't need that class. Prices: if you compare prices to Stitch DC, you will find that the same skeins are on average $1 more at Looped Yarn. They invite you to their open knit on Thursday evenings. But, when I sat at the appropriate place for a long time, the people must be really click-ish, because they all congregated in a different part of the store. The staff: when I went in to ask for an idea on making a kid's sweater, all they did was point at the computer and told me to check out ravelry. It's nice that they have a computer there, but it would be great if knowledgeable staff could point me towards projects that have been good for them or worked for other customers, rather than refer me to the wide world of ravelry. Case in point - their blog and tweets usually just refer you to ravelry patterns rather than their own ideas. As a small point, they should try to make sure not to gossip about other customers. I have been in the store 3 times, and twice they were talking poorly about a customer. It made me feel very uncomfortable. read more

I was traveling to DC with my husband and as usual looked up the local yarn shop. Looped was in the area and I went looking but missed it the first time. It had a small sign and was up a flight of stairs. I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived upstairs to multiple rooms filled with couches and tables and sunlight. I wish I had more time to sit and knit for the day. The staff was friendly, printed out a pattern in Ravelry to go with hat I tried on and loved and even the customers were friendly. Apparently hanging out is encouraged. I look forward to my next DC trip and will build in more time for knitting. Nice yarn selection here. read more

I really loved Lopped! I am a brand-new knitter. I'd been in twice before, but just looked, and the staff was so friendly, depsite my not making a purchase. I went back a few weeks ago with a friend who is a huge knitter, and she was very impressed. This time, I bought some needles and yarn (just bamboo, and two skiens), and my friend gave me a few basics. I know they offer classes, and I plan to take some, I just wanted to know a few things first, otherwise I tend to get a bit intimidated if I know nothing! The staff were so friendly and nice, and so encouraging of my learning. They told me about ravelry and the open knit nights, which I hope to attend soon. This place is a total delight. I took the beginners knitting class here and it was EXCELLENT. It's pretty much individualized attention: if you're quick to grasp concepts you'll be instructed further, and if you're struggling then you can get help. After 2 classes I had a great foundation, good skills, and was ready and able and excited to knit! As I new knitter, I go to the shop all the time: whether I get stuck with my current project and need help or want a new project. They will tell me what to make, show me the pattern, direct me to the yarn and needles, and encourage me to come back and show off the finished project. Where the joy can be found in this store is with the people. The laughter from employees and customers fills the place. Everyone is treated like family...customers talk with each other, anyone can answer your questions, employees happily tend to your every need. I've never been there and seen the employees stocking shelves, organizing, etc. They are ALWAYS chatting, helping, and enjoying their time with guests. There's knitters sitting on the cozy couches and they offer smiles and help, which is critical to me and my new (poor) knitting skills. I live in Alexandria so "Fibre Space" is a few blocks from me but I've found that Looped just feels like a warm, loving little club to me (one that anyone can join! Go! Now! Join!) Fibre Space feels more like a business and hasn't been nearly as welcoming and helpful as Looped. This place is like visiting a friend's house for company, jokes, stories, laughing, and knitting. Having frequented other yarn shops, what impressed me most was how I was greeted and welcomed by both Rachael and Melissa. There was a small group of knitters chatting away, which I always enjoy. Updated on 10/8/17: Went back to this location and had a MUCH better experience! One of the ladies that worked there told me about their rewards program and provided some great info on their yarns. Went to this location while visiting my family. It's located in an upstairs suite so can be a bit tricky to find but they have good signage outside. Just make sure you look up! They have a pretty good selection of yarn. A lot of the big name brands that I've seen online but really wanted to get my hands on to see how they felt. I purchased a few hanks of malabrigo which I had been wanting for a project. My only negative with the store is that they were not friendly. I wasn't really greeted when I walked in and when I made my purchase the lady wasn't very nice either. Not what I was expecting from a yarn store as most have wonderful and friendly service. I've wanted to learn how to knit for years, but just couldn't teach myself. I finally decided to take a class at Looped while I was pregnant last year and have been hooked since. I still meet up with gals from the class regularly to knit and chat. We often meet at Looped when one of us needs to buy supplies, and in doing so, have formed such a bond with that place and the lovely women who work there. I can't say enough about the people at Looped! They are all amazingly helpful and just so sweet. I love Rachael, Yvonne and Anne and feel so welcome at my local yarn store. I've even brought my baby in and she's hung out on the counter with the gals while I knit. It's that kind of place. Now let's talk about their unbelievable selection of really good yarn. They carry such great international brands - Malabrigo, Madelinetosh, Manos de Uruguay - and even some local indie names. They are one of a handful of US yarn stores who carry the highly-sought after Qing Fibres. I feel so spoiled here that the very few times I've ventured to other yarn stores, I've regretted it. Umm, I love this place. I have long cursed DC for its lack of yarn and sewing resources, so Looped is a God-send! They offer a well-curated selection of yarn and notions in a cozy (yet bright!) upstairs loft. It's a very inviting space. The owners/employees are so helpful and warm. And they offer classes! I've taken one, and it was sooooo worthwhile. There is something for everyone, from the most inexperienced novices to the super-knowledgeable experts. Looped seems really committed to fomenting a lively community of fiber artists (aka knitters!) in the DC area. I am so glad they are here. Go in and talk to them! read more

I love Looped Yarn. It's one of the best yarn stores in D.C. proper and very accessible via bus and metro. Plus, the proximity to DuPont makes it a fun place to grab dinner. The workers are always friendly and helpful. Last time I was in a worker helped me pick out yarn that worked best for a pattern, and was gracious as I asked a lot of beginner-questions. The space is small in a cozy way, and often a pack of chattering knitters sits in the center working on their projects. It's a great little community and very welcoming. I totally wandered in here by accident . . . and promptly fell in love. They even let me bring my dog in! They have such a wide assortment of yarn. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable without being at all pushy. I love that they have yarn from local suppliers. I definitely ended up buying more than I'd planned! I don't know how to knit or crochet and still bought stuff because i was engaged by the friendly store clerk Joelle. She was very patient with me because i went from felting supply to knitting to what's the difference in yarn types of questions. Basically i was annoyingly curious!
