Decent Kayaks but Unprofessional Staff…read more We planned to rent for 3 days and kayak around to the north and west sides of san juan island (or as far as we could manage). We arrived near closing time. The first fellow was quite generous in helping us plan our trip. He handed us our paddles, lifejackets (which were very old school), bilge pumps and sprayskirts. Then he picked out two kayaks for us. It took us some time to load up the kayaks with our food and camping gear. He took off at the closing time. When we got our kayaks in the water and it was time to go, I found out that my spray skirt did not fit my boat. It was WAY too small. So, we paddled for 1.5 hours to the south side of Shaw island to camp for the night, with the intention of returning in the morning to get a fitting spray skirt. That morning it was chilly with a steady rain. We left a message on the shop's answering machine explaining the situation. I was soaked and cold in my kayak. When we got back, there was a sign in the window that said they were closed for the morning due to rain. My call was never returned. Finally, the guy from the previous day showed up around 4 PM. He briefly apologized, but did not really go out of his way to make up for it. The funny thing is, I tipped him $5 the day before. At this point, our plans were completely ruined. We paddled in the vacinity but never got to venture where we had planned. The next day, we talked to the manager. She begrudgingly refunded us for one of the days, and then made a snide comment about us getting a "free day". Our trip was ruined. We did not want a free day. We wanted a kayak expedition rather than 3 days of day trips. She failed to see this. We will try another outfitter next time.

My experience with Melissa has been the best of all of them. It is very easy to communicate with her what you need and want and want and she does a great job. Haleiwa is a little far for some people (myself included) but I try to make a North Shore trip out of the day and it is always worth it. The cost of the massage is very reasonable, plus as a teacher I get a discount. You don't get the frills of a fancy spa here (but I'm not sure that's worth the extra $100 anyway) but you do get an awesome massage!

It is different than other techniques I have had done to me but I think it will be very beneficial after a followup treatment. She has great hands and an intuitive touch which, unfortunately, is not always found in many "clinical" massages I have had. Her place is meticulously clean and welcoming. The breathing and meditation exercises we did before the photoshoot helped me to feel comfortable in front of a camera. Sterling helped me to feel comfortable in my own skin - which to me is priceless. As a light-skinned Pacific Islander, I often felt uncomfortable with my appearance... until I moved to the continental us for college. But even then while I felt adequately assimilated, my soul felt split. This experience has helped me to love myself wholly and fully, marrying my two selves that I had kept separate for too long. Never would I have thought that a photoshoot would allow me that. Sterling's talents are very special and unique. I am forever grateful that our paths crossed. To anyone thinking about an embodiment photoshoot, I say go for it.
