We had one castle room and one carriage room for our stay. Both rooms were quaint and well maintained. The gardens around the property are gorgeous and wonderful to explore during nice weather. The only thing to note is that in off-season the main restaurant is only open on the weekends and the tea service is not available during the week. While we enjoyed the food at Hermione's, the day we stayed there was a group event closing the main restaurant so we had to eat in the bar area. Most of the activities are off the property which wasn't very clear as we approached the date of our stay. We ended up visiting the National Stud Farm (about 30 minutes drive) and the clay pigeon shooting (about 40 minutes drive). Highly recommend both activities and really appreciate the staff helping us arrange these activities. The downstairs bar area is open late with a delicious charcuterie and board games are available to use by the fireplace which was a fun way to spend the later evening hours. In the morning, we checked out the health club which has an gorgeous indoor pool, spa, sauna, steam room, and gym. Afterwards, we enjoyed breakfast at the Hound. Our hotel package included breakfast which was incredible. The Hound has amazing views of the driving range. For breakfast there is a buffer and the option to order something off the menu too. We decided to go with the buffet options but most individuals did both. After breakfast we walked throughout the estate. The hotel offers horseback riding, clay shooting, fishing, and more. Breakfast was adequate and staff again were polite, helpful and when i asked for poached eggs i got them quickly and just the way i wanted them. The only negative about the breakfast was that there was not a great choice in pastries or healthy options such as fruit and yogurts but the full Irish was ok. When we asked at 9.30 if there were any more pastries we were told there were none. All in all it was a nice hotel if not a bit lacking in the little extras. Carlow town is not far from the hotel on the Portlaois road and if you drive about 10 minutes you will find the Brownhill Dolmen which has been around for 4000 years.

Later then, two grilled sirloin steaks, mushrooms, onions, bowl of chips, side-salad if you ask nicely, accompanied by their new house red, a False Bay Shiraz at just €18, which washed it all down just nicely. The steaks were succulent right through. We chose to share a dessert then, a big slice of chocolate cake with choc sauce drooling over it. The choc sauce is tasty as its made in-house, not so the cake part; bought in apparently, a bit shall we say, saw-dusty ! They do good coffee though, and the full Irish next morning was delivered promptly to our room (extra charge of course) which just filled us up the more. As well as I came back for a few nights at the end of my trip in Ireland. Rooms are lovely and huge and well appointed. Restaurant is beyond delicious and the Irish breakfast buffet is bountiful, decadent And delicious. The staff throughout the hotel and restaurant make you feel pampered and important. Also everyone is very informative with information on things to do in the general area and day trips. Countryside is lovely and charming and a true castle is across the way ..

We were staying nearby Borris and needed to find somewhere to watch Ireland play in the Six Nations. Cue the Step House. As we were stragglers in terms of arriving in time, we still managed to find some good seats. There was a good crowd and a great atmosphere here for the rugby. A bit of banter with one of the barmen during the game paid off post match when he sorted us out with a table for some dinner. Then he waited on us really fantastically. Really attentive. And the food was great too.

The Carraig has the best wi-fi internet we've found in the town, giving us a chance to remain in touch with home in the U.S. The staff here is the best, friendly, helpful. They're open from about 8 AM until late, and can pull a really nice pint (or half-pint if you prefer) of Guinness, as well as a selection of other beverages. We haven't had occasion to use the hotel facilities, but no doubt they'll measure up to the downstairs. Thanks to all the staff for providing a home away from home.

The staff were excellent. The food was amazing. Everything really appeared to go like clock work. After dinner everyone went outside to chat and mingle the night away. The heatwave we were experiencing made it feel like the Mediterranean. After the reception room closed, we made our way to the hotel bar. Greeted by a very affable bartender, he was able to give a history of a few of the pelts and stuffed animals displayed in the room. He was a good laugh too. It's only fabulous, Castle Durrow.
