It isn't often that I write recommendations but my experience with Dr. Shuster at Academy Dental…read moreCare definitely warrants one. I should say, I do not enjoy going to the dentist at all and over the years I've had some health issues that make it even more daunting. Typically, I have to explain my health issues to a new dentist but Dr. Shuster knew immediately what I was talking about and how it needed to be approached. That's never happened before and instantly put me at ease. When I arrived at her office in Chatham she and her whole staff could not have been more welcoming and my visit was as smooth and painless as I could have dared to hope. It didn't hurt that Dr.Shuster-Ella-is extremely funny. Add it all up and it actually made going to the dentist enjoyable, something that's supposed to be impossible. On top of that, my teeth look and feel great. Her office is on Main in Chatham and I couldn't recommend anyone more highly.

Then there were at least a couple of months that I had to do all the leg work for their office to get the insurance. As of date, a couple of months later I still did not get my refund nor my statement. I am not sure how the office is ran, but unless you are a millionaire do not bother going there

Just make sure you really need a root canal before going. I feel I was talked into an extra rather…read moreexpensive x-ray to convince me that I needed a root canal. They proceded with the first half of the root canal. Then, they basically said I shouldn't have it finished because it'll probably need to be taken out anyway... so, just find an oral surgeon. Due to lack of guidance by office personnel (she had recommended some over-the-counter meds for pain but refrained from telling me not to take it before my scheduled appointment which was the next morning!), the initial consultation was deemed "inconclusive". I rescheduled and went to my car. I noticed a swelling and called and asked if I needed antibiotics. I had been tasting a bad bacteria taste as well. They said I didn't need it. By that night, full blown absess (on weekend of course). Had to go to emergency dentist on Monday morning and got prescription. Subsequently, made it back to next consultation and they proceeded to do partial root canal as I noted. Procedure went fine and then was told I shouldn't bother having it finished because I would probably need the tooth taken out anyway. (I overheard the same conversation in the next room.) I just want to help people in my situation. Endodontists are paid to do root canals. Dentists do the fillings, crowns, etc. Oral surgeons extract. They all do their individual procedures and most do it well. Just review all your options and make your decision.
