I really didn't know what to expect since I've never attempted to be a mermaid in any capacity, and can barely even hold my breath underwater. My friend and I ended up being the only ones in this class - so it was just the two of us adult women and the instructor all being mermaids together. The instructor provided fins/tails for us. They were pretty worn - my tail had lots of pilling, fading, and holes in the bottom. Then we got into the pool, and the instructor taught us two different mermaid swimming techniques, as well as a few tricks like handstands, flips, and splashing the water with our fins. The whole thing was very casual and not super structured, which could be good or bad depending on what you're wanting. But I think it was extra casual since it was just three of us. We ended up chatting with the instructor throughout a lot of it, and then would work on a new trick for a minutes. At the end, we had time for "free swimming", to just practice mermaiding on our own. Then the instructor offered to take a few photos of us before our time was over. I had a lot of fun, but I think the group that you're with probably has a lot to do with it. It would've been pretty awkward by myself, and I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if I was with a big group of strangers. Since it ended up basically being a private lesson with one of my best friends, we laughed and goofed off and had a memorable experience. They never got permission from the parents who paid over $300 for the party!! Not only were all the mermaid certificates covered in coffee stains, one of the girls' certificates had MERMAID spelled incorrectly . The birthday girl received her own personal mermaid tail from her parents as a gift ($100+) which ripped up one whole side 15 minutes after she got in the pool with it. It was an extremely disappointing experience, which is so sad because it's such a great concept. Unfortunately I will never be using this company, my daughter has been begging for a mermaid party but no way will I pay for this level of unprofessionalism. I was told that per their policies (which literally are no where) they will only change one. I wrote back about life circumstances happening and they said "Thanks for the information." My child recently met the age requirement to start group lessons and we immediately signed up. We were paired with Coach Emma, who also deserves 5 stars, and swim lessons went off without a hitch. Everyday she greeted the kids with such enthusiasm, they quickly became enamored with her. She took the kids under immediately, read their body language and understood where and when to push the kids out of their comfort zone. The fluidity of this class was A+, it just flowed through the skills required to become competent and confident swimmers. The kids don't remain stagnant, there is teaching to all ability levels. And the kids had lots of time under water. The best thing? I love that they don't encourage use of goggles until their upper levels.

Nancy aka "Miss Mermaid" has been helping train our daughter in competitive swimming for the past…read moreseveral years. Her speed and technique are improving in every stroke with every lesson, and we're seeing the results in her times at meets. She evaluates at each lesson, then focuses on what she sees as an area for improvement which can improve time and/or efficiency. She's also very good about making recommendations for cardio and resistance training exercises, and which muscle groups on which to focus effort, in order to directly benefit swimming, and which local swim teams could be a good fit for further improvement. If your child/pre-teen/teen, or you as a competitive adult in Ironman or other training, want a top-class, no-nonsense instructor with the experience and active involvement in the sports, you need look no further. She will be straight forward with your swimmer on what they need to do to improve, but doesn't push it past the point of being "over the top" like some of the instructors we tried tend to do. She knows how to be tough, and nice about it. She's inspirational rather than threatening. We did try the rest, and have been very fortunate to find Nancy.
