Macadamia & Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart; Toffee Vanilla Choux Puff
    Emily C.

I would not bat an eyelid to pay for the pastries and cakes at Lorraine's. My favorite would have to be the Macadamia & Salted Caramel Chocolate tart - I know the name doesn't give it much mystery but it is probably the greatest tart you'll taste in Sydney. I have also tasted the Toffee Vanilla Choux Puff which is essentially the profiterole's more glamorous (and more delicious) relative.

So it seems cheesecake is their specialty, so perhaps I should have tried that? In this case I just tried a raspberry tart. It's kinda hard to take your time deciding when it's near closing time, the favourites are gone, and there are still people in line behind you. The best thing about it was it stayed very true to its core flavour, but it was pretty pricey so I suppose it's okay to expect that much as a given. Other than that, I didn't feel the need to try it again. Perhaps something else...

    BEEF PIE $8.5

Tucked in a small city alley, the setup is atelier(workshop) style which means that you can see the tools and pastry chefs working. This means that whilst the food is very fresh, there is no seating inside or even outside around the shop. The closest would be benches at Martin Place. BEEF PIE $8.5 $8.5 for a pie? I love a good pie but even I find that price steep. The biggest difference is the flaky pastry at the top of the pie this gives additional texture and resembles a French style pie. It is sort of a hybrid Aussie/French with the base soft and moist saturated dough from the filling sauce at the bottom and puff pastry as the hood The filling was delicious and it is still kept warm in the oven it was baked in. Eclair $8.5 The choux pastry was still cri sp even at 1pm. It was super fresh, not the generic Eclair and at that price it should not be. Totally balanced taste not too sweet, however the full flavour of the chocolate still came through. The small shortbread coated balls brought additional texture and chocolate overload. Conclusion It looks like this place is mostly set up for catering and take-away. However if you work nearby, why not? it is a viable option for a meal under $10. The other cakes were also mostly delicious notably the Strawberry Mascarpone Cake. The cakes are reasonably priced however the savoury items like the pie are overpriced. @thesydneynoob

Came in 3 at Friday afternoon. Busy Friday. Almost sold out. So should better go earlier. I choose a cake and a pudding. Taste really nice!

I'm a foodie, NOT a shopper!…read more After walking around Sydney's CBD, we visited the famous Queen Victoria Building, a late 19th-century Romanesque Revival marketplace that is now a shopping mall filled with high-end boutiques and eateries. We crossed George Street to The Strand, where we were in search of the world-famous patisserie, Black Star Pastry. Although I don't use IG or FB, I heard about Black Star Pastry's Strawberry Watermelon Cake while reading an old New York Times article about this Australian patisserie, which declared this signature cake and most-requested cake as "The World's Most Instagrammed Cake." So, I made Black Star Pastry a destination during our pre-cruise stay in Sydney. We followed the directions posted on The Strand's directory to Black Star Pastry and ogled the artistically and attractively decorated cakes while zeroing in on the Strawberry Watermelon cake slices lined up next to the Raspberry Lychee and Mango Yuzu cake slices. Honestly, all of the cake slices looked lusciously delicious, but our taste buds were craving a refreshing slice of Strawberry Watermelon. We selected the cake slice, and the amicable countergirl neatly packaged it and asked if we needed eating utensils. Of course, we needed and wanted eating utensils as we dreamed about digging into the cake at their dining counter right away. My husband rushed me to finish taking photos, and he jabbed his fork into the tender yet juicy cake. Before I knew it, he unassembled the cake slice to reveal a fresh-cut slice of juicy, ripe, and sweet watermelon, light rose-scented cream, tender cake, and was topped with fragrant rose petals and fresh strawberries. He claimed it would be easier to eat because the cake slice was about 3" high and looked like it would've toppled when pierced from top to bottom. Yeah, it was HIS "thing" about eating this cake, I decided to take a bit of the top layer, then a small slice of the watermelon bottom layer together. It truly was refreshing, light, and not overly sugary. The lightness and flavors of this cake seemed like it might have been low-cal, but even if it wasn't, who cares when you're on vacation?!

Nice looking baked goods with a tight seating area. Too bad the taste of the food did not match the appearance. The chocolate croissant had about a snack size candy bar's worth of chocolate in it. The beef filling inside the meat pie had dried up a bit and was quite salty. I've had much better meat pies from frozen food sections at way less than half the price.

Haven't been back to either of the aforementioned shops since then. I always seem to get a combination of some of my favorite items: red bean buns-not to be confused with their red bean "paste" buns, which are thicker and sweeter-, custard buns, egg tarts, plain polo buns, and taro polo buns. There's all range in price $1.00 ~ $2.00, and I definitely prefer their versions to the ones found in other shops as these ones are less sweet and more generous with filing. Also, please be on the lookout for their pre-close specials, where they bag a few assorted items for a hugely discounted price in late afternoon around 5-6pm!

The are famous for their cheese cake, and the pastry that I've tried today... it was out of this world. My Apple turn over was nicely glazed, sweet and slightly tanginess from the apple, which I assumed Granny Smith apple, cooked to perfections, still have a bite to it and ration between pastry and feeling, just right. 2. They served a good coffee, everything is just perfect, form the caffeine dosage through the perfect milk temperature. 3. Quick service, friendly and come with smile. I request to change another but all the staff (4 staff include the chef) insisted that it is the one and refused to do anything. Even the chef said it's normal to look like that!! Also the staff just took it in n out to show to their colleagues, finally they damaged all the edge of my cake and just repack it and pass to me. Also they just deleted my comment form Facebook. What a service ! They "USED TO BE" nice patisserie that I purchased for almost every celebration in the past. Don't buy Unless you expect the cake won't look the same as you order. Otherwise, never in the future.
