Went here over the weekend and wasn't impressed and sad to say I won't be returning. However the staff was very pleasant and the Margaritas were good. We were placed by the door and with the cold this wasn't fun either. When the food came I thought the waitress would have thought about us hardly even touching it and just moving across the plate. She walked up and asked if we needed boxes and we said yes. We paid our bill and left I'm not one to make a scene or want to be that kind of person. If we return it will be for a margarita and some chips and salsa. read more

Just like I remembered it from years ago when we lived in Dubuque, good Americanized Mexican food. After our server brought out baskets of hot chips and complimentary salsa, we ordered appetizers and main dishes. My favorite sharable is their white cheese dip, and we went through two bowls full. Creamy, and slightly spicy given the diced chiles within, it goes great on their hot chips. For dinner, I order a combo platter including a taco, burrito with rice and beans. Everything hit the spot with their robust red sauce and topped with some extra of that aforementioned cheese dip and a little bit of salsa. Yummers! So glad I was able to make the trip back after a 15 year hiatus! read more

Went to Los Aztecas for National Margarita Day and I was so impressed. The margarita tasted very fresh and they have a large variety of margarita flavors to choose from including strawberry, raspberry, jalapeño, and many others. I had the raspberry margarita and the steak quesadilla (with bell peppers added in). Everything was fresh, hot off the grill, and the service was great! Chips and salsa were great - plenty to share and the salsa is delicious. In the summertime they have a large outdoor patio to utilize. The queso here is wonderful as well. read more

Salsa is basically tomato sauce and onions. Chrizo dip is sooo salty. Chimichanga is two corn tortillas wrapped and fried; each about three and a half inches long. The Guacamole that comes with it is about a teaspoon worth so don't get too excited about getting guac with the meal. They should be embarrassed about the rice. It's over cooked white rice and tomato sauce. I was three chips into my appetizer when my food was thrust upon me. After I displayed my disappointment with the chimi, I never seen my waiter again. Lime margarita was good . I had a bad experience the first time. Nothing improved my second time. Ugh. Do yourself a favor a find a Taco Bell. It will seem like a five star restaurant compared to here. read more

The food was very delicious with great ambience. But, the waiter that served us very well, did not charge us at the end. Terrible service and bill was wrong. We ordered two soft shell steak tacos for $2.99 each and they charged us $3 for shredded cheese on them (when she asked what kind of cheese with the lettuce). After they said cheese was extra and son didn't even think it came with cheese. They didn't offer to adjust bill even after I said food and service was terrible and we just wanted to pay and leave. Plus they never brought the side of rice we ordered. Cheesecake for dessert was served frozen. As in hard to put a fork in but he ate it. Will not return. read more

Humm ... not the worst Mexican we've had. Pros. We were seated and had chips, salsa and drinks in less than five minutes from walking in the door. The (spicy) salsa was good - chunks of onion and cilantro. Cons: Our lime margaritas tasted like a liquid sweet tart and the non-spicy salsa tasted like bland tomato sauce. Contrary to the "pro" of the speed in which we received our drinks, chips and salsa - our meals were delivered WELL under 10 minutes. It was nice, but, we were not able to enjoy our drinks or a bit of conversation. We felt VERY rushed. Meh: Flavor, our meals were bland, the beans were runny and the hard shells were soggy. Service, the food runner - literally dropped our plates on the table and abruptly slid them in front of us then quickly turned and walked away. The waitress, while friendly, was not attentive after our food order was taken. Overall, not horrible, but, definitely not enjoyable, great or authentic. read more

My daughter and I went in one night looking for Mexican food. I love good Mexican cuisine!!! There was not an employee in sight, there were two people in the entire place, and not a soul came out. Had it not been for the couple eating i would've thought the place was closed. After standing there for almost five minutes, finally someone came out, looked irritated, and sat us. It took another few minutes for him to come back. When he did, he really kind of threw the menus down and then did the same with the chips and salsa. He left the table and didn't come back for ten minutes. I tasted one chip with salsa and the chip tasted like bagged chips from the store. The salsa really wasn't anything to write home about either. I had finally reached my limit on patience and left. We never had a meal there and I won't be going back. We went around the corner to at Fiesta Cancun. read more

Just happened to be on a yearly golf outing in Dubuque Iowa, about 915 pm ,we decided to get something to eat ,came across this restaurant Los Aztecas Stop in ,they were happy to greet us, order some drinks my friend said it doesn't taste nothing like Bacardi when I took a sip of my drink it sure didn't taste like Don Julio Anejo, when we place our order took probably about 10 minutes. The onions on my friends plate ,cold !!!! the shrimps that I have were wrong I took a picture of the shrimp and we told the waiter the waiter said talk to the manager manager was very upset at us because we were complaining he told the waiter to take the plates so we won't show him when he came out but I did take a picture of Of the raw shrimp, highly recommend not to go to this restaurant, I pray that I don't get sick read more

Not sure if I came on a off day or what, but the food wasn't that good on my second visit, the first visit was a little better than this one. Soggy, greasy hard shell tacos that lacked flavor and a chicken quesadilla that didn't have cheese in it. The food here has always been really good but the service has been getting progressively worse (even before COVID-19 was a thing). We've waited up to an hour to receive our food, had our food delivered to other tables, been seated and waited 20+ minutes to have a waiter come up and take our order etc. Tonight we were greeted and seated upon entering and 10 minutes later no one came to our table to get our drink order or even acknowledge we were there. We walked out... NO MORE, there are to many other restaurants in town to put up with this systemically horrible service. This location has the best margaritas in town! Well balanced, not just a glass full of mix. I recommend the taco fajitas, perfect size for one person if you don't want to order a full size fajita dish. If you like queso then I recommend the arroz con pollo. Last night he was doing it all. Greeting, seating and running all over. Then he was actually our server. He really is a great guy. They work so hard and are so busy. I have been going to Los for a long time and the food as always just been ok. But after my last experience, I will not return. I had to rudest waitress ever. She messed up everything I ordered and each time wouldn't even speak to me and acted as if I was the problem when she just didn't listen to something as simple as "on the rocks" and comes out like a slushy or "nacho's with beef" and it came out with chicken??? Seriously? I understand mistakes happen but she was so rude about it and didn't even respond or acknowledge me when I told her my order was wrong. We come here often. Service is fast. Drinks are large. Don't mind the listed hours. They are open Friday's. Budget minded or don't want a lot to eat? Tostaguac is a real value. Azteca mixed vegetables is doused in queso and chicken or shrimp. Lunch specials are great. Sit outside on the patio too. read more

I've been to this location and their other restaurant on Dodge several times but this is my review and my comments are thoughts from many visits There is a significant drop off in service with this location but the salsa at this location seems more fresh and has more heat which a good thing! Overall I can't give this restaurant better than an "average" review. This is probably the worst restaurant I have been to in Dubuque. Just went there tonight and I asked for more salsa and the waiter rudely said that I had to pay for extra salsa since I wasn't ordering anything. When I said to him that I did order food he asked what did you order? When he was the one to take my order 10 minutes prior!!! And this wasn't the first experience I've had with this waiter, months ago I went in and he told our table to tell him what we want at once so he didn't have to take so "many trips" . When I talked to a manger they didn't seem to care. So I will longer be going to this location and I don't recommend anyone else to. read more

The staff is very helpful and they do an excellent job of making a good experience. But, the food is not good. It's like the menu lists this and that, but whatever you order, it's all the same. Their dishes have no differentiation, and they are not good. Mexican food would seem to be pretty simple to cook, but they mess it up. Stopped by 09/14/19 around 3 PM when it wasn't so busy. We were seated promptly but that was the only positive thing that happened. I had to flag down someone to wait on us. Waited a long time for drinks and then our order. I received a number 11 instead of a number 1. After the correct order was served, no one stopped by to check on us or offer to refill our drinks. I looked around and all of the front end staff was sitting down looking at their cell phones. The food wasn't bad but not exceptional...makes me wonder why they are so busy at peak times. As an out-of-towner that makes frequent visits to Dubuque, I try to have lunch at Los Aztacas as often as possible. Great Mexican food with just as great service. Stopped in for lunch. It is a nice place, but the food,apart from the salsa is not very good. I ordered a burrito deluxe and what I got would be considered an enchilada in any other restaurant. I have given Los Aztecas a couple chances. Mexican food is one of my favorite types, but I have yet to enjoy a trip here.

Thr tacos el pastor were the most delicious ever. Roasted pork with sweet onion, pepper and pineapple = perfect!

One star is being generous! While out to lunch with co-workers, i had ordered the fajitas, and had asked the waiter as to whether or not it was possible to get both chicken and beef. He said that it was possible. Food arrived; it was mediocre at best. Steak and chicken were both very gristly. Onions and peppers were not as caramelized as I would have liked for them to have been. Upon paying, I realized that I was charged dinner prices- more than $16- for my meal. When i asked, the waiter stated that it was because I had ordered off of the dinner menu. Not the case, I said; when I had asked if steak/chicken combo was possible, he SHOULD have added the qualifier that yes, it was possible, but only as a dinner menu item. In that case, I would have elected to order in alignment with the lunch menu. He responded to this with "well, I cannot read your mind" and "your dining companions all seemed to be able to order correctly". Of course, we both understood at that point that I was over a barrel. I countered with "well, I won't be coming back then"- to which he shrugged and said "ok, that's fine". Frankly, the food isn't good enough to make up for having to anticipate the ways in which I may be duped into paying double for a meal. No accountability for a waiter to represent their employer so poorly, and treat a customer so poorly. Lazy and entitled staff, county fair-quality food...consider yourself warned. read more
