A new attempt in a building that has lead to successes and many failures. It's been greek, Indian, american and now Mexican. A typically decorated place, somberos on the wall and the usual Aztec style paintings, nothing out of the ordinary. The food on the other hand was excellent. Very small place with big flavors. Stopped in for a quick dinner after I saw their great Yelp score. Free chops and salsa were excellent. There wasn't any visible cilantro in the delicious salsa which is fantastic. I had the Lalos burrito and it was piping hot and delicious. read more

we ordered El Pastor tacos and chicken fajita. Corn tortillas for the tacos flour tortillas for the fajita and rice and beans. The tortillas appeared homemade and excellent, everything was very good. Servers were very friendly, prices were fair. will go back. read more

If you didn't know it was there you would drive right by this gem of a restaurant. We ordered the steak fajita quesadilla, steak torta and chicken flauta. The food was delicious, hot and pleasantly presented. The flauta was top quality with creamy Mexican cheese and guacamole-veggie accompaniment. The torta came with fries. It was a lovely surprise. They are shoe string and fried tender crisp. The torta was too much for me but I finished anyway due to its delicious nature. My friend had the steak quesadilla and said it was top quality. He requested a spicy sauce which appeared homemade. The sauce was very spicy, definitely spicier than a Tabasco (for reference). The waiter was helpful and patient as our group had non English speakers. The service time was appropriate. The ambiance was pleasant, relaxed and welcoming. The price for this lunch was good. We will definitely return the next time we visit Dubuque. Parking is on the street. Be careful, but traffic does not move too quickly. You could probably find a spot off the Main Street. This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE place in all of Dubuque!! No joke I have not had a better Al Pastor Taco ANYWHERE in the entire Midwest (possibly the entire US). Not to mention their rice and beans is to die for. Genuinely I went back to my home town Mexican place and suddenly I was disappointed because it's just nothing compared to Lalo's! And on top of it all service is incredible! Every server is so kind and I come so often they know my order. The place is always clean and well decorated. I LOVE it here. Love the chips and salsa which isn't too thin or too thick, I get the hot sauce with my meal usually and it has quite the kick to it. Everyone is always very friendly here. Service was GREAT. IT was cold that day & every time someone walked in the front door they would bring in an ice cold breeze. So it sort of ruined the ambiance. Then I ordered the grilled chicken fajita salad & it literally was like soup in a fried tortilla bowl!!!! We came in from out of town and found Lalo's on Yelp. We sat down and got prompt service. The drinks were good but the food was amazing. My wife had shrimp tacos which she really enjoyed. I had the carnitas dinner. I can't remember when I have had carnitas so tender and delicious. We left feeling sad because we live 170 miles from Dubuque and don't get here very often. Stopped in on a Friday night. We were glad we got there earlier (shortly after 5) because it quickly filled up and people were waiting after we were seated. Small seating area and little cramped inside but service was quick. Food was delicious--we all got something different but was all good. Flautas were smothered in delicious queso, beef and steak tacos were very good. Tortilla chips weren't quite as good as other Mexican restaurants (didn't seem as fresh) but everything else was very good. read more
