Los Campos is a highly rated restaurant in Guanajuato. We decided to visit for dinner only to discover it was only us as diners. Normally, this would cause a red flag but perhaps it was early or an off night. Los Campos is located on the south-eastern side of Centro Historico district and is an easy walk from Jardin de la Union. What drew us to Los Campos was the referenced diversity of their menu. My companion eats chicken and fish, while I am a vegan and plant-based. Their menu has multiple vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. While the flavors were pretty good, it was the plate presentation that was exceptional and we both felt that Los Campos was a little too pretentious for us. I was limited to order the Chaminones con Mezcal. Mushrooms flambeed in Mezcal with orange zest and dried chile. My wife, although not excited to try, did have the Burrito de Cerdo Ahumado en Salsa Colorado. It wasn't that Los Campos was too fancy, it was more like we, as diners, were more comfortable in other settings. We would suspect that diners from the United States or from Europe would fall in love with the avant-garde interiors and plate presentations. From all accounts, that all seems to be true, it's just our style. Our food was good and was plated expertly and I don't have any issues recommending Los Campos for a romantic dinner out for a couple. read more

This restaurant moved to a new location AND so much changed. The old location had intimacy. This one is empty and cavernous. We went specifically to sample their delicious créme brûlée. We remembered it as a genius fusion of creamy rice .SPECTACULAR Alas, they changed it to a stale , from the fridge , crusty cream ----ugh!!!! WE haven't been back and will not return until they reinstate their former, superior créme brûlée! Will they do so? They will if they care about their reputation. After multiple different answers from people in the plaza, we finally found it! Some items on the menu caught my eye. Arancini - a delicious dish from my family's motherland-- whoop, not available. How disappointing... but it must have been my lucky day since we fell in love with the Elote y Jalapeño Fritters. I regrettably ordered the Burrito de Res which was simply soggy and overwhelming with the mushrooms. The accompanying aioli was delicious! The pastel de carne was simply a hamburger. Good but the menu description leaves you craving something different. Ordered two glasses of Sangria and our complete bill came out to a $25 dinner for 2. Overall very happy with our experience even tho the entrees weren't exactly what we were expecting. We ate at this most fabulous restaurant a couple of nights ago- all my culinary and visual senses were on high! I went with my partner who is one of the most picking eaters one will ever encounter. That said, the owner, Michael moved here from Canada around 8 years ago, was incredibly attentive to his request, and got it just right. This along with the marvelous and unique plates I ordered we had a perfect experience. The attention he puts into the menu and presentation will hopefully guarantee that Los Compos will be here for many years to come- pandemic be damaged! Ultimately I was disappointed with Los Campos because the experience lagged far behind the enthusiastic reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor. I think the three stars are deserved because service and atmosphere were good and while I did not like the food, I think it was prepared with some skill, quality ingredients and relative inventiveness. I have only gone once so this review may be premature, but since I may never have an opportunity to return to the restaurant I think it is fair to give my two cents. Food: Los Campos focuses on new interpretations of Mexican classics and offers them in small plates meant to be shared. The corn and jalapeño fritters and chile relleno, being the two items that stood out in others' reviews, were the only things I ordered besides agua de guayaba. I was expecting light, crispy fritters with intense flavors of sweet corn and slightly spicy chile. Instead I found them a little greasy, a little heavy and rather unspectacular in flavor despite the dabs of jalapeño pesto and squish of accompanying lime wedge. I was only able to finish one of the stack of three fritters served. The chile relleno, I'd already read about online, was a dried and rehydrated chile pasilla stuffed with bits of marinated pork and roasted corn and served on a bed of barley risotto in a corn husk. I found the dish dry and heavy in texture although I did enjoy the flavors-slightly spicy but with some raisin-like sweetness from the pasilla, and earthiness from the toasted corn, the tender barley, and savoriness from the chile-marinated pork. What was missing was something fresh and acidic; maybe pickled red onions or a small portion of a fresh salsa of fruit, chile, cilantro and lime. Instead the dark stuffed chile sat all alone on the plate. Atmosphere: at the early dinner hour of 6:00 PM the small dining room is softly lit, decor is rustic yet elegant. The tables are generously spaced apart enough that the three other tables of diners there did not intrude on my experience. Service: polite young woman server and older male server who answered my general questions and listened with concern when I told him that Los Campos' incorrect address on the web (Cerrada de Carrica 4A) led me astray all the way across town when in reality, the restaurant is located in Plaza Baratillo on Calle de la Alameda. Both servers casually but attentively checked in throughout my meal. read more

Very much enjoyed the frituras de elote con jalapeño tapas. We ordered two other tapas, the cecina and guacamole borracho. The guacamole that came with the cecina was better than the guacamole borracho. The guacamole borracho wasn't well seasoned. It was really just chips and guacamole with very little tomatoes and chile. The cecina itself was dry and very thin and not one you could dip in the guacamole for the same reason. The presentation was great in all the tapas. All in all, the frituras saved the meal. Staff was attentive and nice. No locals or Mexicans from other areas at this restaurant. read more

Nice place, small and cozy. Lots of vegetarian options. We decided to just share a few plates from their appetizer menu and it was plenty of food. We had their black bean soup and creamy tomato soup. Both were great. We also had the pork meatballs in a tomato base sauce. The meatballs were delicious and the sauce was more like a hearty tomato broth based soup. It was different and nice. It reminded me of my moms albóndigas soup. We also had the shrimp appetizer. It was the full shrimps, heads and all. Not my cup of tea but my friend, who loves everything under the sea, said they were very well seasoned and really tasty. We also had the fried avocado. It was a halved avocado tossed in some kind of panko and fried then topped with nopales, tomato, and queso fresco. I liked it but I think if it had just a pinch of salt either in the panko- or even a salt shaker on the table- it would have been much better. It was plated with a sauce on the side that was super flavorful, I would describe it like a really delicious cold mole sauce(?) which was great on its own but not sure it went with the fried avocado. We ate here twice on our last visit to Guanajuato in 2017, it was stellar! Not so much this time. The service was very bad. The waiter had to be reminded multiple times of what was ordered. We were served two mains, while one of us was left without being served, as this plate was dropped at another table across from us. We ordered the lamb tostadas, when they arrived where full of tiny sharp bones. Very dangerous! Then one of us was served a half pour of wine, because they ran out. When the bill came, we were charged for a full glass of a more expensive wine. The owners have opened a new restaurant in town and a not overseeing the operations at the restaurant any longer. Had dinner here this evening, and I've got to say, as a left-coast American, this is a wonderful restaurant, fine dining with Mexican roots, rather than a fancy setting with fancy Mexican food at a higher price. It's small, so I'd advise making reservations rather than just wandering in at dinner time. Full bar, fairly extensive mezcal and tequila list. Don't be thrown by entrees called 'burritos', they're presented more like sushi rolls, and delicious! We had four drinks (probably why I'm more loquacious than usual--but the food was objectively good; honest!), an appetizer, two entrees and dessert for $900 MXN after a tip--worth every centavo. If you are in the historic area, downtown Guanajuato don't look for a farther place to have great food. Plan ahead and make a reservation. This place has few tables and it's busy. Their food it's really good!!! Their prices are very affordable for the quality of their dishes. We ordered Tomatoes filled with corn, cheese and cream. Lasagna with mushrooms and huitlacoche. Queso fundido and Tacos de aguja de res. Every dish was exquisite, light and authentic. They don't serve "diet coke" so I tried Jamaica agua fresca but I didn't like it, It was flavorless...They have wine and alcoholic drinks but soft drinks. Really fantastic food and great atmosphere! The owner/chef seems to frequently be out talking with people, he is friendly, and very passionate about sharing his food and drink with guests. For appetizers- the guacamole is fantastic- the corn cakes are amazing- I highly recommend them and the tomatoes with corn is light and exceptional. I can't speak highly enough of the chili relleno- it is delicious- the chili is roasted perfectly and it is stuffed with pork. I'd give this restaurant 5 stars for effort and ambiance but I was a bit underwhelmed by my mushroom appetizer. The mushrooms and sauce they were swimming in lacked for flavor or any sort of complexity. Tasted like wine and not much else. The mushrooms were large and I felt undercooked - you needed a steak knife to cut into them. So I would not order that. They made me a vegetarian version of the chiles rellenos, using the filling from their burrito to stuff the pepper. There was just a bit of cotillo sprinkled on top and it was served on that barley risotto. The flavors and textures of this dish saved the meal for me as both were on point. The smoky flavor of the chile essentially carries this dish and I found myself longing for more of it. The margarita was delightful- although the oversized ice cubes just get in the way. I removed them from the huge glass and used a spoon to drink the margarita like soup. Guanajuato isn't really a gourmands paradise so this place stands out if you're looking for a higher level of food, ambiance and service it seems the place to go. Seeing burritos on the menu gave me pause since these are an American concoction, not Mexican. Sometimes it's better to just do the simple things really well than to focus on the presentation and the ingenuity of the cuisine. It's a fine line and takes a true master to be able to cross it successfully. Los Campos makes a good effort in this regard but there's always room for improvement. Good place for romantic dinner or group of travelers. It has a happy feel. I only went once and had 3 items so may not be the best judge and jury. You can tell these people care about what they're doing so perhaps just don't order those mushrooms and be prepared for an iceberg in your cocktail and you'll have a great evening. Kudos for half salting the margarita glass! A brilliant idea that pleases everyone. But lose those silly ice cubes - they're like a wall between thirsty and not. read more
