    Chips and salsa

This was our third visit to this restaurant. It's not easy to find as it's a couple of blocks off main highway in a residential area. It has never been busy on any of our visits but today we entered and just stood there for quite some time with no one to greet or seat us. Finally grabbed menu's and seated ourselves. However, once seated our server came from the back area, apologized and quickly got our drinks, chips and salsa. I ordered the lunch chimichanga and my sister the chicken & cheese nachos. She opted for a 1/2 order and it was plenty. Food came out quickly and served hot. Portions were adequate and food was tasty. Cute, quaint decor. Nothing fancy but cozy.

    NOTHING to brag about.

THIS is one of those reviews I do NOT like to have to write. BUT, if we don't write honestly, then what's the point? Let me start off by saying that we've eaten at this place for a lot of years. My family has had celebrations here. I've taken my now grown kids here often. I walked in just after noon, on a rare solo dine. There were only 3 tables taken up, not busy at all. THE SERVICE. The hostess was business-like, not very welcoming. She was also to be my server. During the entire service, she was barely hospitable. She NEVER stopped in to see how my food was. The closest I got to a smile was when she asked me twice if I wanted dessert. Funny, because I watched her interact in a much friendlier way with 2 other sets of diners, who I'd say are 'regulars'. THE ORDER. I ordered the Lunch Chimichanga, for $11.95. I asked for chicken inside. The server/hostess asked if I wanted green sauce? I said I usually get that luscious white queso sauce. She advised that would be a $2 UPCHARGE. (WHAT?? Aw, c'mon!). For me, a Chimichanga ain't right without that white queso sauce so I begrudgingly said okay to that ridiculous 2 dollar upcharge. THE FOOD. NOTHING like I've ever experienced at this location! The flavors were oddly muted, like they wanted to come out but couldn't. The small amount of guacamole was watery and tasteless. The portions were a lot smaller than what I've ever had here. And that 2 DOLLAR UPCHARGE white queso? Very thin consistency with about a 1% taste. A total waste! THE FINAL WORD. Based on this experience, PLUS some of the other reviews, I'm done. As Zephyrhills is growing, so are the opportunities for ever-better cuisine. I count Los Chicos now as a FAIL.

The food was absolutely amazing!!! It was hot and fresh, seasoned to perfection. The customer service was great, all the ladies were very helpful and informative. I'll definitely be back again.

Was more like taco soup then taco salad. Terrible didn't have any taste.

Sorry to say but not only myself but, everyone at our table said Worse Mexican food Ever!! Tasteless, my taco salad was sitting in 1/2 cup liquid. More like a soup. Posted picture. Others said bland, hospital food is better, no spices, n served cold. Service was terrible also, served our food had ask twice for silverware. Drinks never refreshed, or the salsa n chips. Cherry on top checked my bill n was charged $5.49 over what it should have been. They did correct it. Last time they'll see any of us.

This restaurant used to be called El Panchos Villa. They got a new name and a new location, but the food is still the very best Mexican food in Zephyrhills, and one of the best in the entire Tampabay area. I do not know the owners family history, but at one time, their family had many restaurants around the Central Florida area. I do not know the particular spices they infuse their food with, but once you have had it, you will always recognize it. My wife and I stopped at a Restaurant on the way to Orlando one time, and we knew as soon as we walked in, that it was owned by one of their family members. It's that distinctive. When we lived in New Tampa, we would go up to San Antonio to Pancho's Villa Mexican Restaurant. After we moved to Plant City, it was just too far of a drive just for dinner more then occasionally. We were both glad when the El Panchos Villa opened in Zephyrhills. Then it closed, and we didn't realize that this new place was the same people. Glad we found out. Some of the things that always stand out, are their refried beans. Like all their food, they have a very savory smokey flavor that is delicious. You can tell these beans were made with love. They have simply the best salsa of any Mexican place I have ever tried. My wife and I get the mild (we are wimps I know), but it is so fresh with the tiniest hint of spice. We have both literally eaten it with a spoon. We never leave without getting some to take home to eat with chips or to cook with. My favorite dish is the shredded beef enchiladas. I almost always get that, but the fajita's are amazing too. My wife loves a cactus and pork dish with Verde sauce that they make, but it's very spicy. I have seen her eat it with tears and sweat running down her cheeks, but she keeps eating it because she says it tastes so good. I can't imagine you eating here and not liking it.

I'm starting to think Zephyrhills is the best place to build foodie havens: low rent, few chains, and plenty of parking. Los Chicos certainly deserves a spot on any foodie's Zephyrhills list. Their nopales con huevo lunch is under $7, vegetarian (I'm not asking how the beans and rice were cooked), and delicious. And there are outlets at many booths for you to recharge your Yelping devices. We had no trouble finding parking, even shortly after noon on a Sunday, and the lunch specials run on the weekend as well. There were five different hot sauces to choose from, though I preferred the cilantro-rich fresh salsa brought to the table when we arrived. Since Stephanie D. mentioned roughly how much seating there is, I counted. I saw 9 booths and 5 tables. Definitely.

The feeling from outside screams Mexico, so we thought we hit the jackpot (not so) the locals seem to enjoy this restaurant. But what I learned is small towns that finally get something new is what they consider to be good. Our waiter Manuel wanted us to probably order more than just our entrees. Our drink selection wasn't appealing as well 3 waters and 1 corona. But we didn't come in for drinks especially since we just left a kids party and had a few drinks there. The children had the cheese quesadilla with fries, they weren't impressed. My wife ordered the carnitas and it was okay and for me the Jalisco Special. Presentation of my wife and I dishes were good but the lack of seasoning is where restaurants are falling short of. What I'm learning is the lack of seasoning is being replaced with sauces. No matter how bland your meat choices are they encourage you to try it with the sauce. This place seems as it use to be Jalisco restaurant but revamped into Plaza Mexico restaurant. The locals may keep it a float but time will tell if this place will last. Hopefully management can fix the lack of seasoning as this is a Presentation of Mexico and are well know for flavorful dishes not dishes with sauces. I know I won't be back but this small town needs true identities of culture dishes.

Honestly, hands down the worst attempt at Mexican food I've ever had. This place honestly is a disgrace to Mexican food. The salsa was pathetic, no flavor and tasted like plain tomatoes. The second "salsa" we were told is a house favorite. It was literally a cold tomatillo ranch, gross. I got 2 ground beef enchiladas with Tex mex and a chili relleno. The enchiladas were not good but were also not the worst thing ever. The chili relleno however, tasted like a frozen pack of TGI Fridays mozzarella sticks from the store. No joke, you could taste the freezer burn on them. The beans were watery and had no flavor. The rice, you could easily tell has been sitting in a fridge at least over night. It was dry, hard, and also had no flavor. It amazes me these restaurant owners want to have a successful business, but insist on cutting corners and not making fresh food. Your food sucks and I won't be back. I wouldn't even let my dogs eat this food. Harsh huh? Simple solution, make your own food. If you want a successful restaurant, make your own tortillas, cook your own beef, make your sauce fresh everyday, shred fresh cheese, STOP CUTTING CORNERS. Any person with a good palette can clearly tell everything has either been sitting in a freezer or a fridge over night. The ambiance is also quirky and I'm not sure what themes they're going with. Woods, bricks, dogs on the wall, 90's color schemes, it's just not it. It takes me 5 minutes to make great food at home, I'll never understand why restaurants can't do the same. This is the type of place you see on a Gordon Ramsay show that he tries to save. My taste buds will never forgive me for eating here, don't make the same mistake.

My friends and I would stop in almost every week. Those meals became part of my routine and part of my memories growing up. Realizing it has been more than thirty years since those first visits makes it even more meaningful to see the restaurant still open today. I am sure the family behind it had been serving the community long before I ever moved to Dade City in the late 80s. The fact that they are still here after so many decades says everything about their dedication and the quality of what they serve. Some reviewers talk about a lack of spices, but that was never my experience. Little Mexico always delivered real flavor and real consistency. They never needed to rely on anything flashy. They simply cooked good food and stood by their recipes. If a restaurant can maintain a positive reputation across generations, it means they earned it. I truly hope the family is doing well.
