Me and my fiancée were on the way back from a trip and decided to stop at Los Cocos Mexican restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious and service was excellent, food also was served very quickly which was amazing! Also not very expensive (to me at least, $30 for two adults eating) which is a huge plus. The atmosphere was also very cozy and welcoming, I will say it's not some 5 star restaurant with white walls and decor plastered everywhere, so if you're looking for something "fancier" this probably isn't it for you, But for me I love the feel and nostalgia of Mexican restaurants like this. Plus they more times than not have better food! My fiancée and me will definitely be returning if we ever happen to be in town again! read more

I haven't been here in a very long time, so I stopped by since I was close by and got the Bistec Picado En Salsa Verde. It was very good, but it was overly spicy. I'm not sure if my spice tolerance has gone down or if they changed the recipe. I love their sweet tea though; it's the perfect combination. Our waitress was nice, so I have no complaints. This Mexican restaurant simply needs to spice things up a bit. We ordered two beef chimichangas, grilled chicken nachos, a chicken and cheese quesadilla and a side of guacamole dip. The food simply lacked seasoning. Mexican food should be flavorful. This food, particularly the meat, which should be seasoned, was not. It was so disappointing. We also ordered one fried ice cream. It just wasn't very good. The staff is pleasant, the decor was nice and the restaurant appeared very clean and very neat. I appreciated that. But I hope that someone from this establishment reads these reviews, particularly the ones mentioning the lack of seasoning, and takes them to heart. It could really be a great place to get Mexican food, in my opinion. read more

I've been to Los Cocos a few times now and have enjoyed the experience every time. Fast service, friendly staff, good prices. My last order was the chicken adobe. Lightly seasoned chicken, cooked to the right degree of tenderness, topped off with a cheese sauce and generous mix of veggies. The dish came with refried beans and rice as sides (a little cumin in the rice would have gone a long way but it wasn't necessarily bland, either). Overall, a very tasty dish and a very reasonable price. The complementary salsa was crisp with a nice touch of heat to it, and my drink never went empty. No white sauce, though (for shame)! The restaurant was clean and quiet. Casual ambience, and I liked that the staff wasn't blaring Mexican music so loud that I had to scream to converse. Not as in-your-face as other Mexican restaurants, which is a nice change from time to time. I agree with some other reviews that the food may not be seasoned as strongly as one would expect but I still thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Generous portions for the price, too! The food was decent but not much different than any other Mexican restaurant... or certainly wasn't worth the 35 minute wait for the food after our order was taken,.. and I assure you it most certainly wasn't worth waiting while everyone's toddlers ran around the place climbing on the booths... even after the food was delivered and my wife and I were trying to finally eat our meal. Today, I purposely waited until I knew the restaurant would not be busy so I could dine with my friend and be able to talk privately. I expressed to the OWNER that I wanted a table where we could talk and not be overheard. He took us to a table right beside a table with other diners seated. I expressed that I wanted to sit somewhere more private. He took us back to the same table. There was no one else dining in the restaurant at this time. I asked to be seated in the far side of the restaurant and he said no, he had only one waitress. MIND YOU, THERE WAS ONLY ONE TABLE WITH CUSTOMERS AT IT! The rest of the restaurant was empty. I told him I would go somewhere else and he turned his back in us and walked away. A very polite young man came out of the back and offered us the table I asked for and called the waitress over. She refused to wait on us. Needless to say, I expressed my displeasure and left even though the nice younger man offered to be our waiter. I'll never go back there and I'm sure they couldn't care less. I'm actually glad we left, because we went to El Saucito and my request was not with a smile and great service. They need to change the name to Los Ca-ca. For more reasons than you're thinking. I am in South Hill on business and after reading the positive reviews on Yelp, thought I would give it a try. My husband and I stopped in for dinner and each ordered a sampler style plate. Nothing was seasoned. Chips were decent, but the salsa was bland and tasted like they took a can of stewed tomatoes and blended them with random seasoning. The enchilada sauce was sweet. Not complexly sweet or good sweet. Off-puttingly, doesn't belong on a soggy tortilla, sweet. The meat (I think it was meat, at least) was gross. Absolutely disgusting and I'm pretty sure the cheese was fake. No joke. It melted like tasteless plastic in my mouth. Too terrible to even be government cheese. I prefer Taco Tuesday at my old middle school. The one in the ghetto. Or even those "taco breakfast pizza's" they used to serve in school. One reviewer said it was an upgrade from Taco Bell....I think not. Taco bell has flavor and doesn't taste like wet slop. This place had ketchup on the table....Ketchup. Not verde or hot sauce. Ketchup. Save your stomach and go somewhere else. I'm literally signing up to review this place. That is how much I hated it. Los Cocos is the go to spot here in South Hill. My boyfriend and I have gone there once (sometimes twice) a week for the past two years! We love it! Our family eats here regularly and we've never been disappointed. Other negative reviewers sound snobby and difficult to please. The chips are always hot and fresh, the salsa is wonderful. Perfect balance of flavor and heat. The cheese dip is always addicting and the guacamole is fresh and flavorful. I always get the chicken burrito and I pour salsa on top. The shredded chicken is always hot and juicy. It is delicious! My daughters love the cheese enchiladas and always eat everything. They love the rice and we usually have to order extra. My husband gets the fried chimichangas and they are covered in cheese sauce, so good! The fajitas are always hot and fresh. The drinks are always on point and the service is wonderful. They really do strive to make the customer happy. Very friendly people and quality food. Don't pay any regard to the stuffy, petty reviews.
