We decided to give this place a try due to the good reviews. Service was quick and attentive, the place was nice the only exception were the tiny old bathrooms, you gotta squeeze yourself into the stalls. We decided to try the famous Enchiladas Mineras and some steak tacos. The Enchiladas were delicious and plentiful, they came with a huge chicken breast, potatoes, carrots, and lots of melted cheese. The steak tacos were good but a little on the dry side, just a tortilla with the steak. They did brought some onions, cilantro and salsa for them. The tortilla chips and the salsa were free, delicious and a little spicy. I ordered a real Tamarindo water and boy was refreshing. I highly recommend this place if you're in the area. read more

It has such great reviews, especially for breakfast, so I had to try it. Was not disappointed. Service was super friendly and accommodating, although they didn't offer any bottled water for sale, which is unusual in MX. Breakfast was excellent and the prices very reasonable. This excellent restaurant has moved in the past year from Plaza Baratillo to a slightly more upscale neighborhood on Calle Alonso. I ordered the molcajete because I was in a carnivorous mood. It was very good, the grilled chicken and chorizo especially. The beef was a tad on the dry side. The three different moles looked great, but my low carb diet precluded their enmoladas. I'm willing to bet it would have outpointed the molcajete. But service was great and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Probably the best option on Alonso, making it perhaps the best meal to be had between Jardín de la Union and Plazuela San Fernando -- not including Mestizo which is in a league of its own. I will return on my next visit to Guanajuato. You should give it a try. read more

The food was great tasting and seasoned to perfection! I had the Chq. Rellenos w/chicharon and they were a nice twist with the maiz(sopes style) chips that simply melted in your mouth. The Flautas had ample shredded beef and flavorful. The green(crack) salsa was the highlight of the meal. Reddish sauce was good as well and had a little kick on the spicy side, yet still edible. Guanajuato is an amazing city to visit but before you pack your bags to take all the IG shots in front of the park, Teatro Juarez, Callejones, and El Pipila, you have to know one thing, Guanajuato does not have its cuisine. There is no typical food of Guanajuato like Jalisco, Yucatan, Michoacan, Oaxaca. Guanajuato has been borrowing and replicating all of your favorites from different regions and states all over Mexico. This fact was shared with us multiple times by natives that live in Guanajuato so before you start writing your reply about Enchiladas Mineras, Enchiladas Mineras is not from Guanajuato either. This is the heart of the issue with many if not all the restaurants located in Centro Historico. Don't be fooled by the countless menus on display around Jardin de la Union or Plaza de Los Angeles. If you want tasteless to write, 'The BEST ENCHILADAS I EVER HAD IN MEXICO.', go ahead but we all know it's BS. If you want a meal done right with favors, go off the beaten path to Los Huacales. It is highly rated for a reason, it is no-nonsense Mexican food made right. You'll find conflicting hours of operation on various sights, do yourself a favor and call to verify the hours that they open and close. Several online sites stated 9:30 am to 8:00 pm, but is this wrong. It's more like 10:00 am ~ 10:30 am to 6:00 pm. We made the mistake at least twice showing up too early or too late and had to settle for lesser quality meals elsewhere. Don't be like us. Los Huacales is located below a hill behind the stunning University of Guanajuato and has an interior with hip and trendy aesthetics. The menu is on a cutting board so you can easily flip through the pages. You'll recognize many of your favorite Mexican dishes here but they will be created with the right amount of seasoning and at a very decent price. You'll soon discover that many of the patrons at Los Huacales are students from the University, and one of our golden rules is that if eat where locals eat, you're dining out right. We ate Los Huacales twice in one day and if we had done our research correctly, we would have eaten there at least once every day. It was simply that good. The food, the plate presentation, and the service were all amazing. Los Huacales is the only restaurant we can recommend in the Centro Historico district of Guanajuato. read more

The only good thing I have to say about this place is that their green salsa was to die for. Other than that this placed sucked. The service was trash. A party got seated before us when we had already put our names down first. Made us wait and extra 30 min on top of the original 40 min wait time. They new they messed up on their part because they wouldn't even look at us after I confronted them about it. Didn't apologize either. Barley came to our service. Had to ask for things like 3 times. The food was mediocre. I was really excited to come here being that this place mainly had great reviews. Very disappointed, especially with the staff. Highly rated and they lived up to there rating. We walked in about 545pm and they allowed us to pick our seats. Huacales in English means boxes and the decor tries to look box-ish. The waitor was good but a bit slow getting to us. That being said the food rocked. We had the special of the day which was enchiladas 3 colores, a drink and dessert for 130 pesos or about US $7. Each of the colors was a different kind of mole, they were great. One of my daughters had the enchilads frijolada which I tried and it was superb. My other 2 daughters had a quesadilla with beef and tacos with beef. The beef was lean, tender and delicious. We had a jamaica water drink and flan for dessert. I have heard it said that there is no difference between good flan and bad flan. I have to disagree with that statement, this flan was very good. Although we came in at 545pm, we were unaware they closed at 6pm. They did not rush us at all. We strongly recommend Haucales. read more

Traveled all the way from Los Angeles for vacation and chose this spot for breakfast. The restaurant was surprisingly nearly empty for a Sunday morning. My husband and I sat at an empty table that faced out into the street because we wanted a good view of outside while we dined. Without greeting us, the waiter immediately came over and told us we couldn't sit there because the table was for 4 patrons and there were only 2 of us. He then tried to sit us at a tiny table, which was in a second room at the back of the restaurant next to the cooks. Keep in mind that the restaurant is pretty small to begin with. When I told the waiter I didn't want to sit back there because we were on vacation and wanted a view of the street, he became very rude, raising his voice and told us if we sat there, he was going to make us move when a bigger party came in. I told him that was fine, since the restaurant was empty, there were other tables for larger parties, and there wasn't even a line of people waiting. The waiter rolled his eyes and walked away. We sat for about 10 to 15 minutes (no other patrons came in) waiting for a menu but the original waiter and a second one kept passing by us to serve the other 5 patrons in the restaurant and ignored us when we tried to get their attention. I finally got the second waiter to come over and he said the first waiter told him not to help us unless we moved tables. I don't know what their problem was, but I didn't have time to waste my vacation arguing and I definitely didn't travel all that way to be treated like sh*t by a waiter. We walked out to dine at another restaurant (which was amazing) and didn't look back. It's really sad for people in the service industry to act like that to customers who are bringing in money and tips. I doubt the owner of the restaurant would have agreed with this behavior but who knows? Maybe they set those standards for their employees and they don't mind losing money. read more

One of the most valuable lessons on our travel for me is to embrace the unknown and go with the flow. I can never follow all the well meaning recommendations, and I love exploring and finding out new places for myself. So unexpectedly that I enjoy the Mexican food at this restaurant the best on this trip so far. The Pozole Verde is so fantastic, unlike any I've tasted before. It comes with Limes, Onions, Radish, Chilies, and Herbs on the side for us to add to the soup accordingly. It's tasted flavorful, natural, and fresh, which I appreciate very much. The Mole Poblano is heavenly. I didn't even bother with the Pollo much until the end, because I was soaking up the Mole Sauce with the Tortilla Maiz. It's has strong Poblano flavor with just a touch of sweetness. I personally prefer Mole Poblano over Mole Negro of Oaxaca because Negro is simply overly dulce for my preference. This Mole Poblano has complex rich deep flavors, and the balance of chili and sweetness is just perfect for me. Vanessa says Mole is definitely an acquired taste, but she's a good sport and shared the dish tonight. With a jar of Agua Fresca Melon, the whole meal is 180 pesos before tips, which is like $10... the value is insane. The people are so nice here too. Many times, locals have Spanish fly out of their mouth, and we can understand maybe less than 10% of what they say, but we always understand each other at the end, things just work out on their own. Guanajuato is a most awesome town. We love it so far, better than San Miguel and Queretaro. For the variety though, Mexico City still provides the most diverse options. Maybe we'll take a trip to Leon too before flying back on Friday. read more

My husband and I are staying in Guanajuato for 11 days for the Cervantino Festival. We have tried quite a few places to eat following local people, some of them originally from other countries. We were told about this place as a place to eat good local food for less than other places. And I must say we are very impressed. The place is clean and unassuming. The food is amazing, specially their daily combination specials. The serving dishes are rustic and very thoughtful. The service is very good with attention to details and needs of the clients. I tried to eat it as slow as possible in order to savor every bite. The Verde sauce was the perfect balance of creamy and frothy, with hints of lemon and fresh herbs. I would live in this city just to eat this enchilada. Of course, the location itself is great, the staff is friendly, the decor is cute and it's very affordable. This place is a gem. You don't think that the old colonial entrance will give you such a delightfully surprise to your palate. Fresh orange juice and coffee serve in a traditional cup that cannot be fresher. Totally recommend the molletes and the enchiladas mineras. I've tried them in other places but man! We ate here once and liked the food, but we were seated next to the bathroom, which we could smell. We returned several days later and were offered the same table. There were 3 other empty tables, so we asked for one of them. They said we couldn't sit at any of them because there were 4 seats, and we were only 2. We said we would come back. We returned half an hour later. The table by the bathroom was occupied, and the same 3 other tables were empty. We were told that there was no space available for us. We have been in Guanajuato for 3 weeks, and this is the only time we were treated with anything other than kindness and friendliness.
