Bland. Everything is bland. They don't have the choices that other Mexican places have. That giant machete shaped quesadilla? They put barely any meat in it...twice. I have to say this is the best Mexican food in my 100 mile radius. Went back in and she tried making me order them again and pay for them. But on the phone when she read the order back to me, she included the fries. So I just didn't get the fries. When I went home and tried the tacos I ordered, they were so dry and the steak was tough and had fatty pieces. Everything tasted blah. I got the GRINGO pricing on a single veggie burrito. Although the menu clearly says $8. They decided to charge me an extra $2 for vegetables. So basically that's just a pepper they charge $2 more then meat. I guess I should have ordered a chicken burrito, hold the chicken. This up charge wasn't even on the menu. Also they put no beans on the burrito or sour cream. The veggie burrito platter is $10.50 and includes a side of rice and beans as well as salad so clearly they just overcharged me. To recap 2 veggie burritos (not platters) one small scoop of guacamole $3.50 and a soda $2 came to $28.50. There's much better places in upper Darby. Had an appt in the area and didn't want anything heavy or greasy so decided for some Mexican. Got more than I bargained for. Had the chilaquiles with over easy eggs and steak. Absolutely amazing. They require face masks. Service is amazingly fast for the freshness of the food. Saw beef tongue on the menu and figured why not? So glad I did. My friend and I were looking for inexpensive Mexican food more outside the city and boy did we find it! Their food is delicious and large enough portions for even a big eater like me to have leftovers. We called in an order and it only took 15 minutes for our food to be ready. When we got there, we didn't have to get out of the car and were able to use a mobile card reader (which the waitress said was a much needed upgrade for them). Small location but good food and portions. Tastes better eaten fresh right in the restaurant. With take out, you lose some of the taste and characteristics like crispiness or hot temp. I was craving mexican food and i decided to check this place out. I ordered the Al Pastor tacos one of my favorites and a side of rice. This had to the worst tacos I've ever had. They lacked flovor. No salt at all...i had to add some just to eat it to give it some flavor. For $12 it should have been better.The sauces given were watery. Yesterday, my husband and I went here for lunch. We frequently eat at this establishment (best Mexican dishes around)...until today that is We seated ourselves at a booth. Got served chips along with a 3 bowl dish that has different salsa in it. The salsa was eaten out of. Literally the green salsa was just crusted at the bottom of the bowl. Anyway, the server comes back over and I ask her to give us a fresh bowl because this one was eaten out of..... Rather than giving us a fresh bowl of salsa, she pours more green salsa into the bowl that was used for a customer before us. We realize that the bowls that they give out to customers are re-used for the next customer...salsa and all. We get up from our booth and talk to the "owner" about it. We tell her that what her establishment is doing is a major Health hazard and that they could be shut down if the health department was made aware. People double dip their chips thinking that what they are being served are for just them. Clearly not the case. Not only is it being shared between customers but it doesn't look like the bowl are being cleaned out. We made them aware that people can get very ill from what they are doing. If it were possible, then this review would be ZERO STARS. This place is a Complete Disgrace, but not for the usual reasons that might come to mind for a restaurant. It's a long read, but it's important to detail the disgusting experience. I had been here once, a few months ago, and had gotten a 3 steak tacos to go. Back then, it was named "Atexcac." They had recently relocated from down in Delaware, and the menu had the old phone number crossed out as well as the old DE address. I gave it a shot and I liked the tacos, as they were just like ones that I had enjoyed from a place in the city. Last Friday, 04-26-19, I had a craving for steak tacos and decided to back to get some for myself and family. I had such a terrible experience with the Manager (who was also there for my first trip), that I had to leave before it got very, Very ugly. A bit after 9pm, I pulled up and noticed that the place is now named "Los Machetes." Most of the same decor is still up from "Atexcac," (including the hanging paper decorations of that name), but the menu was new and featured bright photos of food. Initially, I had gone to only get tacos, but I saw that they had fajitas and was deliberating on getting those instead. I was talking with a chubby girl at the counter and asking her opinion on some items. A few minutes later, as I was thinking, the Manager, an Hispanic man, about 24 years of age, tall, very thin, wearing glasses, approached me and asked if I was ready to order. I told him that I was almost there, but still deciding. He was wearing his black dress work shirt, but had clearly accented it with a Soviet/Chinese Communist "Hammer & Sickle" Pin on his pocket! There were 6 people sitting and eating; a party of four against the back wall, and 2 next to the window. None of the people in the dining area had likely seen the Manager up close, as the counter girl was also the dining room waitress. I decided to get 2 orders of mixed fajitas (shrimp/chicken/beef -- $15.00 each) and the Manager wrote down my order, but I was feeling very uneasy that I was about to give this business my hard-earned DOLLARS, when the Manager (and quite likely, the Owner) is clearly advocating for Socialism/Communism. Oh, but it got worse. A LOT WORSE. I asked the Manager, "How do you want me to pay?.....in Rubles??" The Manager laughed and says, "No, we don't accept those yet..unfortunately." I said to him, "I said that because I see your pin there..." He responds, "Yeah, I'm very Leftist..." He goes to the kitchen to hand in my order and returns to me at the counter, saying, "So, you have an issue with Socialism?" I shook my head in disbelief and said, "You're in the wrong country for that, my man." The Manager says, "Yeah, I'm saving up to move." I replied, "Oh yeah? Where ya going?" The Manager says, "Mexico, maybe Cuba...or Venezuela....Fight some American Soldiers..." Seriously. He said that. "FIGHT SOME AMERICAN SOLDIERS." Let that sink in for a minute. He was had a very large grin on his face as he said that last part and he said it as he was walking away from me to go back into the kitchen, probably thinking that I wouldn't hear it or address it. He said that he wants to "Fight Some American Soldiers," TO an American, IN America, while running a Capitalistic business and taking American Dollars! UNBELIEVABLE. This dude was Extremely lucky that I didn't serve in the military or he could have had the chance that night! He comes back from the kitchen and says, "Socialism has actually been in this country for about 100 years and..." I cut him off and said, "That's not actually true. While it's been around, it's never taken root. I've done a lot of research on history and read a lot.....but..I'm going to go now." I turned and walked out the door. I WAS SO DAMN PISSED!!! I called my friend and told him everything & ended up at Ruby Tuesday's, where I relived the encounter to the server, who also couldn't believe what happened. Do YOU know anyone who has served in the military?? Do YOU support Communism?? Do YOU believe in capitalism and America?? If you eat here, do YOU wonder where your Dollars are going??? This restaurant is abhorrent and I urge anyone who reads this review to seriously consider going Elsewhere for a good meal. To another restaurant who isn't trying to convince you its customers that Socialism/Communism is a good thing and talks about Fighting American Soldiers. "Los Machetes" directly employs a PROUD COMMUNIST who has a Desire to "FIGHT SOME AMERICAN SOLDIERS," and is owned by someone who has no problem with its Manager wearing a Soviet/Chinese Communist Pin, debating customers about how great is Socialism, and Fighting American Soldiers overseas!!! This was a real let down. Especially given the excellent reviews otherwise. We arrived, were seated at a table that had just been vacated and "cleaned", only to find a whole mess of food under and around the table, as well as some still on the seats and table itself. The waitress asked us about drinks- 1 horchata and 1 water. I then politely and discretely asked her (in Spanish) to please clean the floor. Not 2 minutes later, another waiter/manager shows up and asked for our drink order (again), and said that the table would be cleaned. 27 minutes aftet arriving, nothing was done. Excuse all the wannabe restaurant critics that sadly have this place rated as a 1-3 Star review. The food here is fabulous! I personally can not complain about anything that I ever ordered from Los Machetes. I highly recommend getting an enchilada if you are a first timer. Los Machetes is better then your local Chipotle! To conclude, you go to Los Machetes to eat their great food; not to be a professional table and floor inspector. Someone also recently wrote that they waited for their drinks; which is non sense because you can get up out of your own seat, pick what drink you want and take it.
