I purchased a replica cologne for about $40 from a very nice and knowledgeable lady. I "wore" the cologne, and my GF didn't notice it at all, even though she always compliments me when I wear the real deal. The purchase was a big bust, I returned it about a week later, and a different worker was there. I politely explained the issue and expected I would be offered a credit/refund/ or store credit in some reasonable amount. Instead, she was not interested in doing the right thing, was defensive, and said I was unclear about my complaint. My complaint was straightforward and clear. When she sensed that I was confused by her "argument," I just pivoted and said, "ok, that is a bad decision by you". Some people should not have front-facing jobs. They should work in a warehouse, communicating with software and forklifts, away from the public. This frumpy gal would probably be a great forklift driver. She has no business in customer service - she may own the shop, and that is even worse. That section of 7th Ave is full of nice mom and pop stores with nice folks = not Lotions & Potions. There are plenty of similar stores nearby - GO THERE! read more

I'm so happy to have found this place while visiting from Los Angeles. We originally went to visit the crystal shop in the same plaza which was an emotional let down (just not warm and friendly). Stopped in here to see if we could leave the plaza on a positive note and we certainly did. The store is filled with a variety of scents for you to sample and choose from to make lotions, roll-on fragrance and more! There are also some great body care options like bath bombs, and other accessories to choose from to make a meaningful gift for any occasion. I remember as a kid experiencing a smaller version of this in Santa Monica and much to my surprise my 12 year old chose the EXACT scent I loved then as well. Out of hundreds of choices she chose "China Rain"!! Both ladies working there are VERY knowledgeable about the scents and also what dupes they have for expensive fragrances you would find at commercial retailers. Their enthusiasm is a little intense but all kind spirited and for the love of what they do. I think this is a definite stop for individuals and families who appreciate body care and customization products. It's a fun way to explore making personal scented items, support a local business and take something home unique. Thanks to technology and the internet, you can even order anything online and have it shipped to you from their shop. For those who are scent-sensitive they offer unscented products as well. But if you're susceptible to sneezing like my father is, stay outside or grab a coffee across the street, while the rest of the family shops and has fun. read more

Where to start? I 100%. I'm so happy. I stopped in here one day. I thought I was going in for a little fragrance and I ended up coming out with some pain relief. I've been in twice, both times it was a different person working there. And both times the ladies were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I bought some CBD tinture I'm so glad I did. It was really helpful. Also, I bought some lotion One is synthetic lavender, and the other one was lavender with oil that's real. And boy boy, could you really smell the difference. 5/20/2026 I had a bad, weird experience in the store. I originally added more items to my transaction because I felt bad about only purchasing a small $21 roller ball from a local shop, but now I feel like I was treated poorly and taken advantage of. I originally asked for one designer roller ball scent and then after smelling a few more, I corrected myself and said "Actually I would like to buy second scent this in a designer roller ball please" she said okay! By the time she rung me up with my other items, both roller balls were in the transaction. I told her "oh actually I just wanted the second one that I mentioned." Her e tire demeanor changed and she immediately started giving me attitude and she silently extended her hand with both bottles in it, I pointed to the right one, and then she said "well now I have to void this transaction so please bear with me." And then started smashing buttons and sighing loudly. As if she was frustrated with the process, but it was really that she was frustrated with me (or the owners) because then she said, "can you please write your name and phone number down on this piece of paper so the owner knows the reason why I'm voiding this transaction?" I gave her a puzzled look because I've never had to do this before and she said "it's so the owner doesn't think I'm messing with the register, is that all right? you don't need to write your phone number down..." I proceeded to write my name down, but not my phone number. Then she rang me up for the correct items and the rest of the interaction was extremely tense. She tried to recover by making a pretend nice comment of "you'll have to keep the people off you with that scent!" As I was walking out. I didn't respond. Very strange. I didn't appreciate this experience at all and I love supporting small businesses in my Melrose neighborhood...this is so disappointing. She needs to refresh her customer service skills, I've been both a manager and an employee and I would never treat anyone this way. Disappointed and Uncomfortable Experience I visited Lotions and Potions today and unfortunately had a very disappointing in-store experience. From the moment I walked in, I felt like I was inconveniencing the two women working there. One woman at the counter immediately distanced herself by saying, "I don't work up here, I work in the back," and then followed that up with a yawn and, "I'm out of it." Not exactly a welcoming first impression. She brought out a woman named Bonnie, who initially seemed willing to help but didn't really listen to what I was asking. I came in to purchase my usual Nag Champa roller and simply asked if there was a way to tone down the scent a bit--perhaps by mixing it with something else. She did mention there was an option, but that it would take an hour to figure out and cost nearly $80. I explained that if it was too complicated, I'd just stick with the one roller. What really shocked me was her response. She said, "Maybe when you have more to spend, you can come back and get more scents." I was taken aback and honestly offended. Making assumptions about what a customer can afford is not only rude but completely unprofessional. This was my fourth visit to this store, and sadly, each experience has gotten worse. I've consistently encountered unfriendly attitudes, and today felt like the final straw. The women working here are in serious need of customer service training. Went in this morning to see if I could find a scent close to one someone had given me. The woman who I asked for assistance was extremely unfriendly. She kept telling me "we don't have that". I told her I understood, but was looking for something similar maybe. She totally dismissed me and went to help the person who walked in after me. On a side note, as I was smelling the test scents - each and everyone had an extremely heavy alcohol undertone. Living in the Melrose district I really wanted to support a local business. I have been to lotions and potions two years in a row for my birthday and have loved it both times! :) they have a giant assortment of scents which can almost be overwhelming to have so many options but you truly can create anything you wish. both times i've been in, the owner has been the one to help me create my custom blend and i can say she's extremely knowledgeable and a lovely person to talk to. since the perfumes are oil based, they are extremely long lasting! i can say after having used my scent for a whole year, the scents stay with you all day and even on to the next. i really recommend this shop to anyone looking to find their unique scent! read more

I would NEVER go back to your store. Always best to stick with what you know, and for me, it's the Mill Ave store, which I have been going to since 1992. Bonnie - I too am l in the customer service business, so l hold good customer service to a high standard. When I was in the store today talking to another customer - male 21 years old, trying to start his own woodwork business, after years of make custom furniture piece in his garage - you felt it appropriate to kindly ask me to "stop talking to the customer so you could finish up the sell" - my response was "oh I'm so sorry" and after he had given you his cash and you had secured the sale he looked behind him and said to me " yes I believe that is walnut" I'm sure he thought he had your permission to finish his conversation because he paid you, you thought it was appropriate to then say again "I'm really sorry I'm going to have to ask you to not talk personal business in the store, I really need to finish up with my customers" I so kindly reminded you that we were the only customers in the store. STILL i remained polite, handed you the two items I wanted to purchase, turned around and gave him my business card and told him we could talk when we were not in YOUR space, and proceeded to give you my card - and finally we were granted permission to speak, "you can continue with him now" - are you CRAZY? I have been coming to your location for a while now, you and I have had discussions about life, your daughter, health, and a plethora of things. When I walked in the store, you were already engaged in a conversation about his woodwork shop, I overheard the conversation and simply asked a question, which evoked a conversation between the two of us. I don't understand why it is appropriate that you hold conversations in the store but guest are not allowed to. I hope you know that when you address customers in the store you are speaking on behalf of the owner, the message that was conveyed to me was loud and clear, Lotions and Potions does not value My business, Your "buy something and get out"approach is not an establishment I want to support. I'm sure you could tell by the look on my face I was stunned by your blatant rudeness. I will not be returning to that location, nor will I be recommending it to anyone else. Plus I can add the oil to my body oil that I get from sprouts and it will last longer! You can mix and match a bunch of different scents or get the concentrated versions. When I called the store to verify the address I was told that the address was incorrect online so she gave me the new one and she was pleasant enough. But when I showed up, it was a different story. I was dismissed and Vonnie was very rude. I told her that I was looking for essential oils for my new business and she says well I can't give you any discounts. I love fragrance, and oils work well for me. I like that they can get stronger as you get warmer. My first experience was in the store, and I was helped with making a custom creation. I have since purchase on line, and have also fallen in love with the first couple of fragrances I found there; Vanilla bean and Raspberry. I bought fragrance oils in other places, and their fragrance seemed to fade but the fragrances that I have purchased here lasted all day. I am the owner of ProActive Therapeutic Massage. As a business owner I pay attention to my customer's needs. Always. I have used Lotions and Potions in the past to order massage lotion for my practice. I don't have a problem overlooking the odd behavior of the service that I've received from this store in the past, mainly because it seemed to be more convenient to order from a local store than online (even though there is more of a savings by ordering online). Today however, was extreme. I spoke to someone at 11:30 who seemed to be inept at taking a simple order for a gallon of lotion, but made it clear that I would receive a call in a couple hours from someone else to take that order. Two hours came and went so I called again. I said who I was and that I hadn't received a call back, and that I needed this order to be filled. Then I got an annoyed heavy sigh at the other end. Admittedly, I was irritated so I said that I could also order online -- and before I could finish my sentence, I heard the words, "ok, thank you, have a nice day..." and was hung up on. SHE HUNG UP ON A PAYING CUSTOMER! WTF?! I was shocked. How unbelievably rude! I will never, EVER use this outlet again and will tell anyone and everyone to avoid this store for good. I was able to get a Michael Kors scent match for a fraction of the price I would have paid for the real stuff at the mall.. and yes it smells the same.. the owner was incredibly nice, very helpful and I plan to go back. Fantastic place and a great find, my partner and I stumbled on this place and can't get enough of their custom scents! Bonnie is kind and extremely helpful and has helped us find some scent combinations that personally speak to us. So far I've tried a fragrance roller and a scented bubble bath, and I can't get enough of either! The fragrance oils cling to your skin long after a bath, so you can keep enjoying it.
