I stopped by Loved by the Sun while I was strolling around downtown Hilo and tried out their Live Green smoothie -- kale, parsley, pineapple, and banana. The smoothie was thick and had a nice texture to it where you could still taste the pulp of the pineapple that was blended in. I don't think much -- if any, additional sugar was mixed in, because the smoothie wasn't especially sweet. If you're on vacation and haven't been eating particularly healthy, nor getting enough fiber in your diet, it's a good idea to give your system a boost with one of these smoothies. Smoothies here are priced in line with your average smoothie -- at around $13 or so. If you're looking for something else besides a smoothie, the menu here includes non-smoothie items as well, like juices, açai bowls, and various protein bites. read more

I hate leaving negative reviews, but my experience at Loved by the Sun in Hilo was disappointing enough that I felt compelled to share it. I purchased a juice pack and ended up being two weeks late using it because I was on the mainland after my mother passed away. I was spending that time handling her estate and cleaning out her home. When I explained the situation, there was absolutely no empathy or flexibility. The response I received was essentially, "Oh too bad." What made it worse was that this wasn't my first negative customer service experience here. On a previous visit, I was checking my loyalty points and learned I had earned a $10 reward, and had to use it right then and there. When I asked if it would automatically apply, the employee responded with another dismissive "That's too bad" type of attitude rather than helping me understand the program. Ultimately loosing the $10. I understand businesses have policies, and I wasn't expecting special treatment. However, kindness and compassion cost nothing. During one of the hardest periods of my life, a little empathy would have gone a long way. The juices and products are good, but customer service matters. Unfortunately, after multiple rude interactions, I'll be taking my business elsewhere. I hope management takes a closer look at how customers are treated, especially when they're going through difficult life circumstances. read more

Nice juice/acai spot in downtown Hilo by all the other shops. Lots of juice options, apparently you can make a bowl with any of the smoothies as a base, we kept it simple and stuck to a classic acai bowl. It was delicious, only comment is that the they seemed to use frozen blueberries rather than fresh. Even with that, it was still great. The salad was so good and filling. I also ordered the beet juice which was delicious. The service was quick and efficient. A solid spot for your acai bowl cravings. I've gone here a few times and feel they have a really good acai base which is something I always try to find. The acai bowl is on the pricier side but is definitely worth it. The service is good and the workers are very friendly. They also have wellness shots and smoothies but I've never tried them. I love this place. It is my favorite place to go after a nice long walk in the Japanese Gardens. Whether it's the Heartbeet or the Mermaid Juice with the fresh Acai Bowls, I am never disappointed. The staff is so friendly and kind they greet you with a smile and are always happy to have a conversation. I have to be honest, I haven't tried anything else but the wonderful blend of peanut butter, macadamia nuts, honey, and bee pollen because it is so delicious. I visit the island frequently to stay for long stints of time with family and one of the gals said you are here so much you really should sign up for rewards. There is nothing but Ohana here and it shows. The presentation of the juices and bowls also shows all the love they have for their food and their guests. Don't go here. So overpriced. They don't even use fresh berries. My smoothie base in my bowl was very good, but their granola tasted very wrong and they put so much in it. The lady at the counter was nice but seemed like her kindness was very fake and she was so unprofessional with a cafe full of customers, going back into the kitchen, loudly making jokes with her coworkers that everyone could hear. All while there were many people waiting. She was not nice to a sweet older couple who had questions about the menu. She seemed annoyed that they didn't understand how the bowls worked. I could tell they were unhappy to pay $30 for their coffee and smoothie- crazy prices. The place is so small with no seating besides a bench, menu is quite confusing, and there were mop buckets and cardboard boxes randomly placed in the cafe. Someone stopped me later on the street and asked where I got my bowl, I told them to head to Kula Shave Ice for a good experience, not this place. Loved by the Sun is one of those food establishments that you feel good about eating at. The workers are friendly, and the food is delicious and healthy. There is limited parking on the same street that it's on, unless you park along Kamehameha Avenue. Nonetheless, the parking game is worth it for this food. I called in my order because I was unsure how crowded this place would get. I ordered the beet salad and a super cosmic acai bowl. The beet salad was so yummy! It had a lot of different toppings and crunchy textures. There were beets (of course), feta, Mac nuts, cucumbers, and onions on the salad. I think the Mac nuts added a nice crunch. It also had balsamic dressing, which was perfect. The super cosmic bowl was super yummy too. We ordered a big size to share, and the thing was huge! I didn't know that you are allowed to choose your base, so I went with the regular acai. I think you can choose from one of the smoothie flavors as your base. The cosmic bowl had the most interesting toppings I've ever had on an acai bowl, but the mix of flavors and textures made the bowl perfect. It had cacao nibs, goji berries, peanut butter, hemp seeds, and more. The acai was pretty good, but more on the watery side. It might've been because I waited some time to eat it, and it was previously frozen, since we called in our order. I would definitely recommend this place for a refreshing meal when in Hilo! read more

Another area with Yorbe Mate. Everything is made fresh. I got Ginger Berry smoothie $9 which was a blend of ginger, blueberries, bananas, and strawberries. He got Mango smoothie $10. One size only and both cups came out over flowing. They gave us a spoon. I used the spoon the entire time because it was thick and it was hard to use the straw.
