    Thursday specials.

I was looking foward to trying So Juicy Hawaii and was not disappointed! This is an absolute must try. Its delicious, perfectly designed recipes with fresh local ingredients. While I waited for my food I tried the 'uala sweet potato smoothie with coconut milk, organic maple and apple bananas. *Devine* There are grab and go items but I ordered one of the Thursday specials... the "Moa To Talk About" chicken dish served was on a bed of mixed local greens with a ridiculously delicious tex mex aioli. The sides served with their daily mains are fantastic. Mango salsa is chefs kiss.... perfectly balanced with ripe mangoes and fresh herbs. The 'uala sweet potato salad holds its own in this visual and culinary masterpiece. So Juicy Hawaii is a Hilo treasure. The local sourced ingredients are combined expertly and are a must try. The owner is friendly and serves this food with pride while providing a magical eating experience to everyone who orders. Thanks So Juicy Hawaii! Ill be back to try the lamb dish next!

Swirly bowl and pressed juice (flavor: drama free)

Had the swirly bowl and the fresh pressed juice (drama free) and it was simply delicious and refreshing! The service was great and had great recommendations. Sad that it's our last day and won't be able to try their dishes. Such a gem of a place- meeting the owner was a plus!

Fresh, tasty and clean cafe with amazing 'New Food' movement hopefully to begin a trend for young upstarts. Innovative, yet taste like food that maybe our plant based ancestors would have made. Not over-seasoned, just right 'hand' on all menu items. Recommended for anyone getting tired of the same old spin on the locavore movement. Personally, I like to eat smaller portions of quality food. The Tofu Burger was perfect and it has only been three hours since lunch, but I am already craving to try this place for dinner. The Pipinola Salad is crunchy, with lightly seasoned tomatoes and maui sweet onion, as a side. Juices are made there and ginger is a component of this aqua blue thirst quencher. The tahirts are great gift items to purchase and spread the news! Impressive what GEN EXER local entrepreneurs can do, and it makes me proud to see innovation, quality, and hard work from a few Hilo Boys. Don't walk, RUN and check it out! 5 Stars, for surah!

Out walking, looking for a snack and were intrigued by the coconut tortillas on their menu. So we stopped in and grabbed a plate of mahi tacos. Soooooo good! The ube mash made me a convert!

Perfect for health. Didn't have an opportunity to take a pic of the Macadamia Butter Cacao smoothie because it was that good and before I knew it, I drank it all! The poke...excellent, and doesn't leave you feeling "heavy" from shoyu, they use different ingredients, yet tastes super good! The Ginger drink was a surprise. Not strong at all, a good picker upper. Bought the bottle after sampling. You need to come and just try it...pictures don't do it justice. I had a misconception about this place thinking it would be like every other health smoothie place, but it's different than any other "Juice bar" around or what you're used to. Just try for yourself so you know. #soj

You definitely want to make a reservation in advance, especially if there are cruise ships in port. Otherwise, you're going to wait in line. I would say that the very best thing on the menu is the Teriyaki Flank Steak Appetizer ($19)....this thing is SICK. We ordered the appetizer and it is the most unique Teriyaki steak I have ever had. The teriyaki sauce is rich and just amazing. Just order it. I am still craving it. We also ordered the Lilikoi Hoisin wings and SON OF TIKI DAVE ordered the Lemon Macadamia Chicken ($28) which was delicious, too. They have a full bar and the Mai Tais are awesome. BUT, the Jackie Rey's in Hilo has now become our go-to fine restaurant in Hilo town. The building is classic. An old town Hilo bank, with the vault intact. High ceilings, comfortable tables and decore and an artistic antique wooden bar that would be a gem in the crown of any European city. The management and personnel are the most wonderful people. Always happy to accommodate you in the best way they can. After one kamaaina visit the servers will know your name. They'll make you feel welcome and that you are a part of their experience too, something that is nearly impossible to find in other town dining. They have rewards programs for kamaaina which includes a point system that gives you significant savings on your next visit. The food is first rate, from the pupus to the main dishes to the desserts. Sauced and presented in five star fashion, without feeling pretenious. We will be their peskiest and most loyal customer as long as we are in the area. Kudos to Jackie Rey's Hilo.

Located on the University of Hilo's campus, this seemingly farm to table restaurant has a lot to offer. We ordered the House Salad, Fried Kalo, Fresh catch (Opah/moonfish) over noodles, and fish over Bolognese. We went extra on the fish as we've been eating a bit heavy and some lighter seafood was in order during our Hilo trip. We also got the pickled mango martini and sangria. Everything was very fresh, with local produce making up the crisp salad and delicious pan fried fish over yakisoba style noodles. The fried kalo is definitely different, as it's hard to describe not being a potato, with a different texture being crispy, yet fluffy and starchy on the inside. If you like fried potatoes, its worth trying. The fish over Bolognese had some conflicting flavors, but the fish was again tasty and fresh. Both drinks were quite citrusy, with the mango martini being a bit too tart for me. Staff was polite and efficient. Live music also happens, but it adds to the atmosphere rather than taking over. Reservations can made online and there's plenty of parking.
