We stopped by the Booch Bar on our way into Hilo before a day of adventuring, and it was a great little stop for breakfast. We tried the simple breakfast plate and a breakfast sandwich, and both were tasty and really hit the spot. Since we went on a weekday, it wasn't too busy inside, which made for pretty quick service. Overall, it was a solid breakfast stop and a nice place to grab a bite before heading out for the day. read more

We had an amazing vegan dish here for our little brunch we did in mid morning earlier today. We saw this restaurant yesterday when we were browsing Hilo a few nights ago. We didn't think of anything when we saw it the first time. By just looking at the name of it though, my immediate reaction was, "Is this a kombuchas bar??" Well, it is but it's not just kombuchas they serve; it's more than that. The breakfast/brunch dishes they serve (although they don't have a huge selection) are quite diverse. I do incorporate a lot of vegetarian/vegan diet into my daily meal routine so when I saw the Verdant Vegan I simply couldn't skip it. As my daughter and I usually split a plate when we dine together she agreed to this option of mine. Glad we did. This plate has all sorts of goodness included in it. Sautéed veggies, house-made lentil walnut chorizo, ginger beet kraut, fire-roasted jalapeno cashew crema, fire-roasted tomato salsa, and it's topped it off with sprouts. This whole thing comes with either purple sweet potato home fries or red rice (which we went with the purple sweet potato fries and ended up getting a side red rice. We also got the side kimchi and one egg sunny side up.) And we shared a 16oz Ceremonial Matcha latte as well. This vegan plate is way more than vegan. It's mighty as hell. For those who are still not sure about vegan options will definitely second guess it for something that isn't vegan/vegetarian. It's truly nutrition packed in so many different ways. If I lived close to this cafe, I would eat here once a week to enjoy this delightful meal. I am not kidding. I enjoyed the matcha latte very much although my daughter rated it as "okay". She likes her matcha in a very particular way so it unfortunately didn't impress her. This is not to say that she disliked it. She said it wasn't bad either. This place is a "walk in, order upfront, pick a table where you want to sit and one of the staff will bring your food to you" style cafe. Water is self-served. Once you are done with your meal you'll put your dirty dishes in the designated tub. I like this efficient style of serving food. This place has great vibes as well. A bit hippie-ish where bright dark colors such as purple and red are incorporated into the interior. There is even a stage where bands perform on certain days/times. Quite cool-looking. If you are visiting Hilo soon then put this place on your "must visit" restaurant list. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and quality food will entertain you for sure. read more

Really good breakfast/kombucha spot in Hilo. I especially love the local knickknacks at the front when you walk in. Cute logos, nice stickers, and good kombucha. Lots of flavors to choose from. We got there at 10:45 - breakfast ends at 11. I got the grilled fish omelette; it was fresh and flavorful! I loved the purple sweet potatoes on the side and pineapple salsa as well. It was bright and well balanced. They did however run out of GF bread. My boyfriend got the breakfast Sammy, it was a large portion, lots of pesto and kimchi on it. He couldn't eat the whole thing but thoroughly enjoyed it. You bus your own table but they bring the food to you. Friendly staff and service was great :) read more

Our hotel had samples of their kombucha and told us about their restaurant so we checked it out. Tried the flights and have been buying their bottles every day on the island. We also tried the grilled fish tacos and those were delicious. Definitely give them a try. read more

Great service, vibe and food! Had their brunch, delicious and unique! Red rice and blacken seared marlin in their bibin bop, goat cheese in a moist cheesie mushroom omelette and delicious crisp hueavos ranchero. So...this was good food, but kind of overrated. The catch of the day was pretty small, my boyfriend had more beans than fish! Also there was supposed to be a fruit bowl, was that the slice of fruit on the side or the pineapple salsa looking stuff? rancheros was fine, I did really like the pickled japapenos. I fell in love with Big Island Booch from the six-pack I purchased at Costco, and I knew I had to come try it at its source. It is truly a booch lover's paradise. I will never forget the root booch, an almost unholy but scintillating combination of two of my favorite beverages of all time. What surprised me was the quality of the food. The burger was absolutely delicious. Local grass-fed beef definitely helps, but every ingredient was balanced perfectly, and the hot sauces were a perfect complement (I had to buy two bottles of Third Eye Opener on my way out!). read more

What a cute place to hang out and grab some dessert after a long day at the beach. The vibe was very chill. Loved the music that they were playing. Ordered a gelato, chocolate, flavored, chocolate, flavored cheesecake, and a chocolate brownie, and a little lilikoy kombucha. Yummy, !!! Fresh made hummus yes please! Then on top of that kombucha flight, this girl is happy!!! So good so fresh. The kombucha is amazing. We tried all eight they had today and LOVED them until the last drop. I would be here like every week if this place was close to home. Hilo residents are super lucky! Eclectic, fun, upbeat, ambience. When I say, get the kombucha flight, don't think twice! We got all eight tasters and wow! Top three: root beer, ginger and honey (seasonal)! Don't stop there. Order the hummus! It's fresh! I would recommend the kettle chips because the blue corn tortillas overpower the hummus. The hostess was kind and friendly! Tons of seating - booths, tables and high tables! Along with outside seating. I'll be back to try more of their menu! I don't think you can go wrong stopping here after a beach day! read more

We went to Booch Bar for breakfast. We placed our order upon entering and find our own table. The food is good. I had the Hawaiian Mushroom Omelette with Sweet Potato and my husband had the Grilled Wild Hawaiian Fish with Toast. Highly recommended. We love the live music while eating breakfast. The Booch Bar - Delicious Food, Great Kombucha, and Chill Vibes The Booch Bar in Hilo is a gem. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt inviting and relaxed. The space was clean and had great energy, with a mix of modern touches and funky, expressive art. They also had a cool selection of merch available if you're into that sort of thing. Kombucha Flight As a big fan of kombucha, this place was perfect for me. They offered several options on tap, and we went with a flight so we could try a few. The bartender/server was incredibly thoughtful and took the time to guide us through the flavors, helping us choose a nice variety. We ended up trying the root beer, lilikoi hibiscus, and ginger kombuchas. The root beer and ginger were standouts -- bold, flavorful, and refreshing. The lilikoi hibiscus was much lighter in flavor, as expected, but still enjoyable. I appreciated being able to try a range of flavor profiles in one go. Food We ordered the cheeseburger and the fish burger. The cheeseburger was excellent -- juicy, flavorful, and satisfying. Easily one of the best I've had. My only small critique is that it was a bit too big, which made it hard to eat without making a mess. Personally, I prefer burgers that are more manageable in size, but flavor-wise, it was spot on. The fish burger was also fantastic. Perfectly cooked, balanced, and served in just the right portion. My fiancée really enjoyed it, and I'd absolutely recommend it. Other Notes The place felt clean, including the bathrooms, which is always a plus. The artwork was a bit quirky and not totally my style -- think chakras and interpretive dance -- but hey, art is subjective. If that's your vibe, you'll love it. If not, just focus on the kombucha and the food, because both are worth it. Final Thoughts I'd give The Booch Bar a strong 4.5 out of 5 stars. Great drinks, thoughtful service, delicious food, and a fun, relaxed environment. I'd definitely go back -- especially for another kombucha flight and that fish burger. read more

The Booch Bar is a fun, casual place to eat. It is order-at-the-counter but provides a very comfortable and elegant ambiance to pair with that. FOOD: I ordered a salad and a beer. The salad was above-average. PRICE: the booch bar is slightly pricier than other order-at-the-counter establishments ($30ish per person maybe) but still offers good value for this price with the atmosphere. PARKING: I parked on the street 2 blocks away. It wasn't too difficult to find a spot those there weren't so many open. AMBIANCE: the silverware, plates, tables, etc are all upscale and help to make Booch Bar feel fancy despite being order-at-the-counter. read more

If you like booch, prepare to be amazed. I've never tasted so many varieties of kombucha and even got a bit tipsy from the small alcohol content. The food is amazing and I've enjoyed everything I've ever tried here. Definitely dig into some deserts as well. Found a pile of menus on the side & then seen the "order here" sign by the cashier. Blackened fish tacos & a dready Mary were ordered. It's a "bus your own table" type of place. We didn't mind! Food & drinks served quickly, looked delicious. Interesting clover sprouts on the tacos gave a good crunch. Could've used more sauce, portions were plentiful. Pineapple jalapeño salsa was just the right amount of spicy and sweet. The Bloody Mary was too peppery for my liking. Could've used a better kick of zest. The service was quick n friendly, but they had run out of fresh catch by like 2:00 pm. Opted for the last fresh catch n a blackened chicken taco. The pineapple salsa was great n had good heat, the beans and rice were also tasty. The chicken was super duper dry. I went there for breakfast with my girlfriend and despite being quite empty the food took a little over 20 minutes. The red rice was bad . The Denver omelette I got was just dry and bland. 20 dollar breakfast and I would prefer a quicker cheaper breakfast omelette from anywhere else. If you're local and visiting Hilo you will NOT like this food. This place is for tourists. On the plus side the matcha latte was descent and my girlfriend liked her home style sweet potato's and her fish omelette . I however would never eat here again. read more

This place has good recommendations, but I was not impressed with the food or drink. I had ordered the fish tacos and they were so bland! This is pretty much a self serve place, the only thing they do here is take your order, then deliver it to you. You have to get your own silverware, condiments, water and even salt and pepper. For the price, not worth it. I also ordered a Mai tai, but when it came it looked and tasted like a margarita. I asked 2 different people and they both said it was a Mai tai. Not any I've ever had. All in all, I wouldn't go back to this place. Ended up walking a block away and ordering a real Mai tai. read more

The Booch Bar was a hidden surprise for my husband and I when we were visiting Hilo. We've removed alcohol from our diet so we were excited to see kombucha mocktails offered here. During our visit we ordered the Blackened Fish Omlette, which was very flavorful, and also tried a couple of the mocktails (Cool as Cucumber & Passionate Bliss) which gave a refreshing start to our day. This will be added to our go to spot when we get a chance to visit Hilo again. read more

Some of the rudest service I've ever had the displeasure to receive. The unkempt person who took our order scoffed when my wife asked if they offered any soda and mocked her--openly showed disdain and contempt!--when she didn't know that "booch" was short for "kombucha". Listen, if we had known, we wouldn't have even patroned the cafe. We came for the food, which was ultimately mediocre slop. When the same person served us the meal a few minutes later, he just dropped the plates. We said thank you to be polite, and he just shrugged, gave us another sneer, and walked away without even acknowledging our thanks. Ruined the entire experience with his unpleasant and unearned attitude. read more

Dropped in for a little breakfast. Rather eclectic but boy were we surprised with the quality of food. No lines and the service was top notch. Really enjoyed the vegan chorizo breakfast tacos and my wife enjoyed her mushroom omelette and our friend devoured her sourdough French toast. Love the reggae background music and vibe of this place. They have rewards programs for kamaaina which includes a point system that gives you significant savings on your next visit. The food is first rate, from the pupus to the main dishes to the desserts. If you dine here and are not a big person don't get a booth table as it's the most uncomfortable seating I've ever experienced. The seat is way too far from the table and I needed to lean forward and sit on the edge of the seat. I would recommend getting a table its chair so you be able to adjust yourself to the distance from the table. Server was just Ok and with them placing a water decanter on the table for refill they didn't come around as often. The decanter water has no ice so whatever ice you have in your cup to cool the water. Last time eating at this establishment was better and my only complaint was the window seats next to the picture window and the flys that was buzzing there. Only thing is again there were two big flies buzzing the windows and I had to waved them away. The doors are always shut and only when customers walk in could the flys get in. Staff should walk around before opening and get rid of them. We entered about 5:10 PM so it was opened for just 10 minutes and shouldn't have flys. Air conditioning was on but the temperature was a bit warm and a cooler temperature of maybe 10 degrees be perfect. I had the mochico Ono and it was just ok tasting but on the plate presentation was nice. My wife had the pork chops and she really liked it but said was just a little over cooked. I did try a small sample and to me it was just ok also. ambiance in the restaurant is nice and most of the staff were very attentive. The server we had wasn't and I needed to Get his attention to get my bill even though he had passed multiple times and didn't or should have noticed we were done dining. Probably not be dining again at this establishment again and do know of better dining spots in Hilo.

Don't get me wrong on the food, it's good. If you come here and eat something delicious, on the next visit you want that same dish to be equally as good or better. Getting anything on a lower scale can be disappointing. I've experienced it first hand, but still am a fan of Ola's Brew restaurant. Every place has its hiccups, they are no different. Hopefully it's an off day. Also as a non soda drinker (wife's a soda fan) I think they should offer a few name brand soft drinks for families, though I do give them kudos for trying to substitute it with their own mixtures, but sorry soda drinkers are very picky just like most beer drinkers. I do love that they have free parking available and the restaurant itself is kept very clean and can accommodate larger groups. Overall a place to check out when in Hilo.

Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular. Food was promptly brought out after we placed our order, pacing didn't ever feel rushed, our water cups were never empty, and our server checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. I would definitely stop by Moon & Turtle again if I'm in Hilo.
