It was modernly chic but didn't feel snooty. The lighted tree was a nice touch to the overall decor. Service was excellent. Everyone was friendly, and the food came out at a good pace. I will go as far as saying that I had the best meal during my entire Italy trip. The food was excellent from front to back. Neither dish was remotely enjoyable, and in our view neither was of a standard that should be leaving the kitchen of a restaurant receiving Michelin recognition. The pasta dish was particularly unpleasant, while the chicken was similarly unsuccessful. We left the overwhelming majority of both dishes uneaten. To the restaurant's credit, the staff did recommend a very good bottle of red wine, which was easily the strongest part of the meal. What I find most difficult to understand is how this restaurant earned a place in the Michelin Guide at all. Michelin's inclusion naturally creates an expectation of a certain baseline of culinary competence, and our meal fell dramatically short of it. I have eaten substantially better food at completely anonymous European neighborhood cafés and casual street-side restaurants with no critical recognition whatsoever. Based on this experience, I would be genuinely interested to know what Michelin's inspectors encountered here that we so very clearly did not. Sadly, I cannot recommend this restaurant at all.

I loved the contrast of textures and flavors, though I will say that the bread ended up cutting the roof of my mouth! All in all, Mercato Centrale is a bit touristy, but still miles better (and cheaper) than most "Italian" sandwich places you'd find in the US (pro tip: save your receipt for free use of their bathrooms).
