There is no love or joy shopping at Lovejoy Market! I was visiting my son and stopped in to buy two items which totaled under $20. When I got home and checked my credit card statement, I saw that they had added another $100 to the amount! I tried calling the store more than once since I live 4-5 hours away and no answer! Ive never beenn treated so poorly in my life! I get it its a corner store but for three years off and on Ive stopped by for little odds and ends as I live in a building less then a block away and almost every time im treated like less the a human being. Most recently i asked for two bags (in an effort to pay a bag fee) and the owner the woman proceeded to give me two separate bags. I explain that i was walking with a toddler and needed it to be sturdy and she still pushed back. This is just one of many micro aggressions ive experienced and survived (w/grace) but enough already!!! Simply, its clear to me that they have issues w/ppl shopping in the store so lets stop!! Instead try the gas station on love joy or the small store on 21st at least they are polite!!! Boycott get these folks out of our community because they clearly dont care about the community they make there livelihood in!! read more

Not sure what some of the other reviewers are talking about. There is a modern sense of what a service establishment should be thats incredibly egotistical. I personally don't need anyone to train themselves to be a gold-star service machine (I've worked in the service industry for years). This place is refreshing because it's a straightforward and simple family-owned mini-mart. I come here for beer and snacks when I need them and they're in the neighborhood. Perhaps I've been charmed by the clear-cut realism after living in a place like Los Angeles where the norm is to bend over backwards and bite your fingernails when someone demands affectation and amicable dishonesty for a wad of cash. I'm fine if that's what I've come to; it gets real tiring. And I'll keep coming for what I like here because I like the people and I think they deserve support. read more

Where are bags of ice when I need them? Right here. I totally ran these guys out of ice last Friday during the 90 degree temps while hosting an event down the street. First off, apologies to anyone who needed ice after I got there. But hey, first come, first served. The folks here are nice. The stock in this store seems diverse and plentiful. Unfortunately this conveniently located store (for anyone who lives in the area) is owned/run by a rude man. He never says hello, never greets politely, never says thank you, he insults you when you try to give him correct change, and their selection of items is super highly marked up. I go in there for emergency items to get me through the day when I've run out of groceries and have decided I might as well start going to new seasons instead. Anyone from Portland knows this is the best place to get a sandwich. Been coming here for years and they never let me down!!!! I stop at Lovejoy Grocery sometimes for incidentals. They stock the usual convenience store stuff, but also household goods, medicine, cleaning products - things you might need in a pinch. The people who work there are friendly and service is quick, so it was on my radar anyway. Today I wanted a sandwich, didn't bring lunch to work, and figured I'd give them a try. They're independent, after all, plus they're cheaper than Subway. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. It was so good. My veggie sandwich was composed of cream cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and olives, on whole wheat bread. It was fresh and cold. The lettuce was crunchy and the avocado slices were sweet and bright green. The sandwich was ginormous - at least as big as a 6" sub but on sandwich bread. Plus, come on, $3.69. Yes, it's simple food that I could make at home, but it wouldn't be nearly as fresh and awesome by lunchtime if I did that! Protip: Ask the lady who works behind the counter for Korean pickles. They're not on the menu, but she makes kim chi and several other pickled veggies, depending on what's in season. Protip 2: The signs!! There is helpful advice everywhere inside and outside the store, including a sign exhorting you to leave "no water of any type" on the ATM, and another advising that "dog can hurt if fall over this box." My favorite is the now-removed "No dogs pu-pu here" that was taped to the tree out front. read more

I started coming here beginning 1990 as a teen. Came here for the sandwiches with a pickle, so good. You better know what kind of cheese you want before you order, otherwise expect a mouthful of lip! Make it provolone, swiss or cheddar. read more

The store itself is overpriced. But hey, it's on 23rd, so is everything else! What I'm a huge fan of is the deli. The sandwiches are cheap and delicious. We've hit this place more than once at 12:00am looking for food and found it. And sometimes, just sometimes, we get them for dinner. Whenever I'm in PDX I inevitably end up at Lovejoy Market. It's right around the corner from my boyfriend's place, so it's super convenient to pick up beer and soda. The initial draw was obviously convenience; however, I tend to go back for everything I need in the way of mini-mart fare. Why? Because the people who run the joint are phenomenal. They are always incredibly friendly and go out of their way to be nice--a rarity for sure. After only a couple of visits, the woman who most often works the counter could remember things about me and makes it a point to inquire about my day. You don't find that sort of helpful, friendly service anymore. Sure, I pay $2.00 for a can of black olives, but the staff makes the slightly overpriced staples worth it. She threw in a couple of York Peppermint Patties the last time I was there with the cute comment, "You need desert." read more

I went in there partly for nostalgia and need. Bought a lot of sandwiches there in the 80s and 90s. On this day, I'm a bicyclist, wearing a back pack, and only stopped in because the place next door, where I wanted to eat, went out of business. I needed food. I took off my sweaty pack, set it down to change from sunglasses to regular glasses while the women made my sandwich. When I went to pay for it, she said because I took off my pack and opened it I must empty the pack in front of her. She assumed I took it off to load it with stolen goods. I emptied it for her while unleashing some expletives. I don't feel bad about that. She got it so wrong even with multiple cameras transmitting to two monitors right next to her. After cooling down, I feel sorry for her. She's constantly battling theft and appears, blindly, to assume that anyone wearing a pack is probably homeless and about to steal something. I'm 59 and dressed like a seasoned bicycle commuter. But she doesn't see that. She only sees the pack and thinks thief. While I feel sorry for her (and frustrated by Portland's homeless issues), I gave the place one star because the sandwich, while inexpensive, was bland to tasteless and the area by the sandwich menu smelled like rotting fish. I know, I should have walked out at that point. If you ever go into the once-revered Lovejoy Market wearing a back pack, don't take it off and stand very still. read more

I LOVE The Lovejoy Market! I've been coming here since 1983, when I moved into the neighborhood (Have long since left) but their sandwiches are the best in the world, nothing else tastes like a Lovejoy Market sandwich and they have not changed in 27 years! They are cheap now, but they were SUPER cheap back then: $1:35 for a small and $1:60 for a large. They remained at this price until the early '90's and have crept slowly upward. Still a great deal and I am a bit reticent about telling others about this place,as I kind of think of it as "my" place! Lot's of sentiment for the Lovejoy market, in addition to the terrific sandwiches, the store has been a part of my life for 27 years! read more
