International grocery stores are a necessity as I use in my everyday life items that don't exist in conventional grocery stores. World Foods doesn't carry the ginormous container of pitted Kalama olives that the mothership Barbur Whole Foods does. But they do have excellent customer service and and will transfer a jug from Barbur to Whole Foods for me. They also sell Arz labne which I can't find anywhere else convenient in Portland. Certainly not at a conventional grocery store. They also sell all kinds of other international groceries like giant jars if dolmas, lavash, the best chocolate bars. I could go on and on. Walking the aisles makes me feel like I'm in a different country and it's fun. There's not much in the way of parking. Most people in the Pearl probably walk there. I know I do. The best things in life are the pleasantries of unexpected surprises. We stumbled upon this magical place while exploring PDX. It's funny how we turned corners to find things that no one wants to talk about and then you stumble upon gems like this one. I personally enjoyed exploring the isles. The chocolate isle caught my eye so I spent quite a bit of time there mesmerized by the variety of chocolates I have not heard of, but now I can dream about until my next trip. It was really nice that a chocolate expert was ready to offer suggestions, provide in depth details about types and origins of chocolate options. Personal score for me was finding Celtic salt, which is not available anywhere in California. Who buys salt when they travel? I did. This was our family Thanksgiving dinner from deli and will go down in history as one of the best ever. The turkey was moist but the mashed potatoes were out of this world. Yum. And the winner of all was the customer service. Everyone was genuine, helpful and fully embodies the spirit of thanksgiving by being helpful and loving. TY for a memorable experience. read more

This is a very cute market in the Pearl District.I especially appreciated that it's right across the street from my hotel. It was a great stop to get some snacks for the room, water, yogurt, etc. I was impressed with the selection and variety that they had especially given that it's a kind of mini market size. They also have prepared foods and a deli. The very best most amazing part is the specialty chocolate aisle. Oh boy how overwhelming the selection is. I didn't even know where to start. I think I stood in that aisle for at least 30 minutes trying to figure it all out and make a decision. So if you are a chocolate lover do you want to try chocolates from around the world this is definitely a good spot. Lots of variety and things that you wont see in other grocery stores in the area .There is rows and rows of grocery items ,frozen stuff ,a cheese counter, a bakery section , an OJ machine , a hot bar , fresh fruits and produce, and also wine and coffee counters . The store is clean and well organized and has some seating both indoor as well as outside . I love this place so much, that if I am staying in the Pearl District during one of my frequent visits to Portland, I "might" be in here more than once per day! World Foods kind of has everything you need throughout a day...coffee bar, fresh OJ juice press, delicious Mediterranean/Middle Eastern prepared foods and a well stocked eclectic international pantry in its market area. You can buy your goodies and eat inside or out, and the staff is always super nice. Sometimes I just buy candy and snacks, other times full meals. I would go broke if I lived near by. read more

I've visited this grocery store about five times now. The customer service is excellent--especially compared to providore. I cant comment on parking since I usually walk here, but I imagine it's as scarce as is typical for the area. I find that prices arent too bad for an upscale grocery store --it's comparable to whole foods. It really depends on what you buy. If you're shopping for staples (beans, rice) then definitely overpriced; if you're looking for luxury, artisinal, or local hammade items then the prices are reasonable. The chocolate section is amazing! There is a coffee and wine bar, so you can sip while u shop. The Bad: one of the ovens is broken, so ive had issues with deli food not being heated properly. Camilla the Yelping Hen has been really wanting to visit World Foods. She says it's because she is broadening her culinary talents, but I think it's really because she misses the option to travel the world and so... maybe she can get her fix here. It's a cute little store with a lot of prepared foods. They have all the local brands. You could easily put together a charcuterie plate with a nice wine here. Honestly, I could probably send you in blindfolded and you'd be able to put together a smashing spread of yummy. The prices are in line with what one would expect. They also have a very fun beer selection. While my own tastes aren't totally met with the prepared foods here, I did see some items that might make it into my basket at some point and time. Anyway, we grabbed a bunch of fun beer and headed out to our next stop. Did you know that using a mitten as a beer coosie makes for a classy way to not drink publicly while still drinking in public? Stopped here for lunch after running errands in the neighborhood. I'd never gone inside but had passed by several times and was finally curious enough. I'm so glad I went in! Amazing selection for a smaller grocery. Coffee bar, bakery, deli, fresh produce. Some really neat imported/specialty items, fun to browse. For a small-medium size market it's amazing the variety of gourmet products World Foods has on hand. The deli section and it's offerings are not to be ignored either for the quality and taste. As far as price goes, any place that Carrie's gourmet products will of course be more expensive than a big box generic store. However I find that often World Foods has better prices than comparable. I absolutely adore this place. Every time I visit Portland and stay at the hotel across the street. I come here for a couple mimosas and snacks. The guy at the coffee/bar area in the afternoon is an absolute doll. He makes you feel like he's known you forever. I could sit in this place for hours just watching, enjoying meeting new people and having conversations. I then love when I'm done, I can venture around the store and pick out a few snacks/meals or even fresh squeezed oj to take with me for the rest of the day/evening. my very first time wanting the fresh squeezed orange juice. The gentleman even stopped what he was in the middle of doing to come over and show me how to work it when he saw the confusion on my face. Lol. Everybody here is absolutely fantastic, super helpful and nice. I can't recommend this place enough to anybody in the area. read more

Everyone at the Market was pleasant. The food looks better than it tastes but it was ok. I would have given this place a 4 star except for the incident with the Security Guard. The reason for the poor review was an issue I had to report to this establishment on the Security Guard there. After I got my food to pay for it I turned around and noticed he was right behind me, he turned around quickly to avoid eye contact. I'm a woman of color and he was white. I had done nothing wrong but for some reason other than racial bias he felt the need to follow me. After I paid for my food walking out of the Market he said, have a Happy Easter um. I said, thank you and left. But the experience made me feel uncomfortable and targeted by him! read more

Awesome neighborhood grocery. Three reasons to come to this place. Orange juice. Yes orange juice. They have this crazy fresh orange juice making machine. Fresh oranges go in through the top, pull the tap and orange gold pours out. Owner said it cost some ridiculous amount of money. You can get a bottle (32oz?) for 8 bucks - which is what you pay for a cup of Odwalla at any bakery in the pearl Pita. Made fresh everyday. You can get it puffy or flat and grilled. Both are amazing and pretty cheap. Get some of those and then wander over to the ... Mediterranean deli. Fresh hummus, tsatziki, babaganouj (sorry for the horrible spelling). Hands down, best specialty grocery store in Portland! I'm amazed with the vast variety and stock of quality pantry items on the shelves! OMG, lots of choices in every category: honey, chocolate (rows and rows of shelves filled with chocolate bars!), crackers, olive oil, pasta (even the hard to find shapes like cavatelli and real fusilli con buco), canned goods, cookies from all over Europe, and more. Then add in the cheese counter, hot deli, fresh fruit and produce, frozen foods, and bakery area and Foodies, beware! You will want everything! Whenever I need a specific type of pantry item for Mediterranean cooking, or a delicious cheese and cracker board, this is where I shop. The cheese selection is vast, fresh, and covers a wide variety of hard and soft cheeses. Plus fig jam, quince paste and other fruit spreads to pair with the cheese. If you like hummus, the traditional hummus here is the best I have ever had, in or out of the US! Better than in Greece or Turkey. They add fresh lemon and it really brightens it up! They have butternut squash, red pepper and other varieties also, but I prefer the traditional for the chick pea, garlic, olive oil and lemon combo. The fresh pita here is also incredible. Thin, hot, tasty! Amazing what they do with just a few ingredients! The deli counter also serves spinach pie, other meat pies, small baguette sandwich's (jambone) and other delicious treats. There is always some type of roasts lamb dish and chicken entree with sides of rice, potatoes and other hot offerings. Everything is made fresh and tastes like it came out of your grandmothers kitchen, if you had a grandmother who was a fantastic cook and usd fresh and quality ingredients and cooked with love! Fortunately that is how my Nana cooks so I recognize and appreciate the love that goes into their prepared foods. I've never had coffee here, but have bought cookies and baklava to serve at dinner parties; it's always a hit. There is also a vast wine section making this a great one stop shop! Easy to put together a gift basket for the foodies in your life, including lots of great cookbooks. I bought a friend an Israeli cookbook and she has made many of the recipes. Shopping here is always a treat. If I was rich, I would buy everything here! They have all of the hard to find Mediterranean staples that I grew up with, but are challenging to find in Portland. The store is bright, clean and well organized. Even from the outside looking in, it's vibrant and beautiful. Located on the corner of NW Everett and 9th, it's easy to find parking right out front. They have tables and chairs outside, as well as inside, making this a great place to meet friends for coffee of lunch any time of the year. read more

I stopped here today on the way to the train station, catching train to Seattle. It all looked good on the surface and from outside. It was my first time in this shop. At the deli counter, the first red flag was the surly, young woman who served me. I felt like it was an imposition. She was eating behind the counter, getting a bite of her (lunch?) in before serving me and setting down her half eaten snack in plain sight on the service counter. I have never seen that before. I should have walked out at that point because the whole experience went downhill from here. I bought 3 sandwiches, a wrap, and a meat pie for lunch. Together with two bags of Tim's chips and 6 apricots, the total was $32. The roast beef sandwich with pecorino cheese was all cheese . The ham sandwich was plain as plain can be. The meat pie and chicken cordon bleu wrap were dry. Why not add some caeasar salad dressing or sauce? I ended up throwing almost everything in the trash. Even the apricots were floury - I hardly ever met an apricot I did not love before today. In the end, Tim's chips were the best part of thr purchase - I could have bought them at Arco. Lastly, service at the checkout was downright hostile. There was a real attitude going on here. For the checkout lady (man?) with the piercing on face, I did make my train, and I will skip the stop at World Foods next time I come to Portland. If you appreciate quality product and professional service, then I recommend looking elsewhere. read more

I'm surprised I haven't reviewed here yet. I love this place! They have delicious prepared food, a wide range of gourmet snacks and ingredients, and an excellent beer and wine selection. They have a decent amount of outdoor seating for folks who want to hang out for a bit. Most recently, I tried the veggie kibbeh wrap which was perfectly flavorful. I've never been able to eat kibbeh normally since I can't eat beef, so it was nice to finally break through and try it. Their shawarma wraps and bowls are also amazing. This review is for the Xmas Takeout meals 12/24/20. I haven't shipped at this grocery store, and it seems lovely. We ordered dinner to eat at home this year due to COVID-19. The process was easy and straightforward, though more vegetarian options would have been nice. The service was also great, friendly, everything ready and on time with easy instructions. My bad review is because the food mostly was not good. We have a family of 5, including 2 teenage boys who eat everything. It's really unusual to have leftovers of anything around here, let alone more than half of a $200 meal. We ordered the ham meal (feeds 2-3) and the Cornish hen meal (feeds 2-3). I liked the cranberry sauce, but that's it. It just isn't good food , and a total waste. Because most is untouched, we are going to see what we can do to safely donate. read more

Well after using social media, I received a very nice response along with a gift card from the Everett manager. He also advised that they would improve their response to hello@worldfoods.,, as well as to all other queries on their google form and in the store. So, I am going to give them an improved score. We have not liked all of their foods, have also found their tabouli great or not so great, but we keep going back because we can find the foods not available elsewhere. A food-lover's playground. 100%. Where do I begin? There's a lovely cafe upon entry with a small pastry case of classic breakfast carbs with friendly staff, though I did not order anything. Hands down one of the best wine sections in the city and a great beer and cider cooler to boot. A dedicated specialty chocolate aisle and unique Lebanese/middle easter ingredients which can be difficult to find and some of my most used items. They have lots of other local, domestic and international fine and boutique or specialty food products in the dry and cold aisles. The prepared foods section in the back of the store really steals the show. A huge variety of Lebanese foods, mostly cold and ready for your next night in or hot and ready to go. Bulk meats, sides, vegetarian options, handhelds, desserts, spreads. The vegetarian kibbeh wrap is packed with flavor, filling but not heavy. The spreads and pita are so fresh and again flavorful. There are also ready-to-go pre-portioned cloches of single meals that you grab quickly if you don't want to do bulk. The place is nice and small so you can get in and out and literally all of the staff are friendly and helpful and really seem to love their jobs! We were visiting the Pearl district since the Art in the Pearl was on this weekend. We saw that one of the artist couples who were displaying and selling their art at the event were enjoying a delicious looking wrap. We saw a box with the World Market label so we presumed that the wrap came from the World Market. I'm glad we visited! We enjoyed a delicious lunch at the World Market and we enjoyed shopping their very well curated groceries. We shared Rajaj Rice, an Eggplant with Tomatoes Baked dish, a small portion of the irresistable Chicken Pot Pie and a Tri Tip Beef Pita Wrap. Every dish from their cold case deli and hot food counter was delicious. World Market also sells freshly baked Pita - $2.50 for 2 very large fresh baked Pita - a bargain! The owner recommended a Zaatar Thyme Spread to enjoy with the Pita Bread. We also bought their Butternut Squash and Red Pepper Hummus. We enjoyed the Pita Bread (warmed in our toaster oven) with the Thyme spread and the Hummus at home. World Market has comfortable spaces both inside the store and outside the store to enjoy our meal. Stay clear of the deli. Although the food is delicious, the staff has been consistently atrocious for years. Please hire some experienced employees, it seems to be everyone's first day in the service industry. The young woman taking my order seemed to be in a terrible mood, and was clearly angry about something. Also was constantly touching her glasses which does not seem hygienic. I ordered a pita with falafel and she screamed "you said pita but you didn't say falafel". I and a few people around me were a bit thrown aback by the outburst. When my friend wanted separate falafel the woman had to laboriously search for the quantities sold (3, 6 or 20) which took ages. Honestly it feels like any deli worker's first day, and it has been this same lack of service since World Food opened this location. Somehow Elephants Deli and the Zupan's Deli seem to find quality, knowledgable staff... why can't World Foods find people as good as the food. read more

I have very strong willpower. If I'm on a diet and sitting with people eating pizza or other yummy food, it does not faze me. However, I'm in trouble when I come here. That are cheats and goodies they have here are very close to home cooking. As soon as I walk in, the smells and aromas just suck me in, and the willpower is instantly gone. So you forewarned and don't blame me. They do have other good stuff in addition to Arab food, and it's always fun experience shopping there. I used to shop here until recently, the store is having a severe problem with criminal activity and has lowered their customer service significantly to the point is not worth it to frequent anymore. They have untrained armed security guards sitting at the entrance of the store intimidating and antagonizing long time customers. The lack of training for these armed security guards put customers in peril, in situations reminiscent of the killing at Lowes in North Portland, by an untrained security guard that is not properly trained and supervised by the store ownership. I have witnessed the interactions of their security guards with customers that are very frightening and can escalate very quickly to very negative consequences. Management has been alerted on these situations and have apologized and shift the blame on a third party security company hired to provide the services, and blaming the issue on the poor security guards tasked to provide the store security. The store has severe problems, and are cutting corners to survive amidst the social situation experienced at this location, but is not justifiable to have untrained armed guards, that sooner or later is going to result in harm to customers. I am have alerted my neighbors about this safety concern, I will not shop there anymore, when I can go a couple of blocks away to Whole Foods, Safeway and Trader Joes, where there they do not have this safety problems. read more

One employee was almost asleep behind the deli counter. Had her back to the customer area was yawning loudly and not covering her mouth. The young guy at the register was super disrespectful too. Horribly rude management who, as a former regular, I felt displayed racist and ableist behavior towards me by profiling me based on two factors: my skin tone and my disability (a brain condition which makes me seem "out of it" per se), referring to me as an olive-toned drug/substance user. I received proof of this from an employee who will continue to remain anonymous (thank you by the way to the dozens upon dozens of locals who saw my review and messaged me or stopped me in the building or on the street to apologize for what I went through and mention that they would be shopping far less at World Foods/only for late-night necessities; my brain aneurysm surgery has been most horrific and traumatic event of my life, so to hear that I was discussed as a lying drug-user for seeming out of it truly saddened me. I had moved on, until I saw that for whatever reason my review was removed; I will not be silenced). Also interesting to see that after my review came a RANDOM INFLUX of positive reviews; an elderly man below literally admitted to being bought out! He stated that he changed his one star review to four in part due to being given a gift card. I showed my Arab family and friends and we got a good laugh out of it because it doesn't get any funnier than that. Store associates appear to be incredibly overworked and thus are not very friendly, though I never took it personally as it seemed evident how overworked they are (many reviews also point to this as well). Seems my review was removed (potentially expunged but I cannot say for sure; the WORST part is that when Joyce Attar [management] messaged asking me to call her about my experience, the second I told her she wasn't going to get what she wanted out of me- AKA, *in my opinion* was presumably the removal of the bad review (again, this is all Steve's fault), she totally discarded me and did not even respond to the remainder of my message in which I asked her, politely, what steps of accountability would be taken to ensure that other regulars of color would not be hurt in the same way...it could NOT be more obvious that management could not care less about their regulars but rather, getting what they want; she saw she wasn't going to win the fight and achieve, in my opinion, removal of the review, so she tossed me to the side...just like they treat their employees, many of whom are my friends). Their deli food is mediocre (their Chinese fried rice made me vomit twice, but I kept my mouth shut because their fajitas are OK; being Arab, their Arabic food - despite their baklava- is merely mediocre at best). Prices are SO JACKED because they know they can take advantage of hotel residents/locals who have nowhere else to go and are hungry and thirsty. Just sad. Unless science discovers a new highly dense energy technology, the hundred years centered on now will be seen as the singular epoch of affordable international air travel. The Americas, and our America, are lands of immigration. By air. People bring their food and food traditions with. Food preferences are one of the most gradually changing dimensions of culture. In fact, archaeological anthropologists trace migrations by the seeds people carried. So we have many people in Portland from other countries. And in Portland, we are curious and adventurous in our exploration of food from other countries. We are personally fortunate to sometimes travel to experience the cultural reservoirs of food tradition. And we are also fortunate to have groceries like World Foods in Portland, Oregon, USA to experience those tastes every day, and to also experience those foods without food-borne illness. And if you are an arriver, as almost all of us, or our generations, are, and you are seeking the foods from your family tradition, World Foods has many, with a focus on Europe to the Urals and Northern Africa adding Central Asia. There selection is National Geographic-spanning including, if you would like to support, very inexpensive drinks from Ukraine. Food samples weekends often, and often you will be served by the owner. World Foods is a well curated mix of local, everyday grocery and international items, some made here and others imported. They are the Northern branch of Barbur World Foods, but none of the jars and cans here are dusty. But that also means they have the awesome roast lamb by the pound, and maybe will not run out of it because of demand. They have a fine produce section with very reasonable prices. Meat and fish counter well priced. A mix of baked goods packaged in plastic trays, and locally fresh-baked. A few premade sandwiches on good bread and wraps. A unique item is whole smoked whitefish. They aren't the Great Lakes smoked chubs, but they might substitute. An espresso bar and a fresh juice bar with a small selection. Let's just say we were tempted at the coffee bar by shredded pistachio baklava - the top layer is filo shredded to about a 1/16th. The whole coffee bean section includes Courier and Ristretto. Large canned and bottled fish section for items unavailable elsewhere. A wine selection with bottles I've not seen around town, and there is a substantial growler filling operation with its own about 10 seat bar, four beer taps and two red wines and two whites for tap pours. There are several round tables for eating and sipping out of rain and sun. And you could put together a pretty fine meal from the deli counter. One Saturday, the owner was demonstrating making Turkish coffee and serving samples with plenty of endearing conversation. World Foods is great for world food exploration and has plenty of everyday food items at very reasonable prices.
