I have gotten sick from their seafood twice (they are always happy to give a refund, but somehow this seems inadequate after two nights of aching nausea). I recently suggested a friend get some grab and go there because she was in the area and only had a few minutes. She said she would not be doing that because she had gotten sick off their prepared food a few times (she did not mention seafood). Recently I bought some chocolate and it was nearly expired, had bloom, and did not have a good texture. While this is not a risk to my health, it's annoying! this place is so expensive and they can't seem to turn over food quickly enough to keep it fresh. I walked in for another basic shopping trip, and conjured up a conversation with the wine steward named Joy... started talking about the fancy wines on display and was eventually offered a tour of the Z Cellar, which is a storage area for their top shelf wines as well as a classy event space. The Cellar itself is absolutely beautiful. Designed like a modern European wine cave, the lightning is soft, the blankets looked cozy and the gathering table is so inviting. I would love to host a private party in this well appointed space, and aspire to do so very soon. The store itself is nice and the displays are very well designed. The staff is always incredibly friendly and the service is outstanding. Prices are a bit high for regular groceries but the experience is so worth it. Don't come here if you're brown! I had a very disappointing experience at Zupan's that left me feeling humiliated and discriminated against. I came into the store intending to purchase seafood and meat, but before I had even finished shopping, the bald security guard began following me throughout the store. It was obvious that I was being watched, and it made me feel singled out. When I was leaving, he confronted me and acted as though I was attempting to steal something. I immediately opened my bag and showed him that there was nothing inside. Despite having no evidence whatsoever, I felt that he had already decided I was suspicious. As a brown customer, it was difficult not to feel that I was being profiled based on my appearance rather than my actions. After getting home, I read through other reviews and was disappointed to see that I am not the only person who has described feeling profiled or unfairly targeted while shopping here. That made this experience even more concerning. No customer should be made to feel embarrassed or treated like a criminal without cause. I left feeling harassed, disrespected, and unwelcome. I hope management takes these concerns seriously, reviews the conduct of its security staff, and ensures that every customer is treated with dignity and respect regardless of their race or ethnicity. read more

Zupran's is absolutely adorable. They have lots of organic options and high-quality products. I love that they'll wrap any flowers you buy into a bouquet. I watched someone in front of me buy just one rose, and they wrapped it beautifully. They even have a caviar fridge, and their packaging is honestly so cute. I'm a sucker for good packaging. There's a small bakery section, though I wish it were a bit bigger. They also have a very nice wine selection and aged balsamic options. Update as of 5/14: We Were Racially Profiled and Harassed at Zupan's Markets - Burnside Location- Jan 2025 The Security Director at Zupan's Markets reached out to me with this response prior to today. I am just now posting it because I truly thought someone higher would have reached out to fully great my side to gain an understanding of the impact this situation has had on me. However, no one has and I think it is time for me to speak up: "Balancing exceptional service with security is, at times, difficult. At Zupan's Markets, we strive to create a safe and secure environment where employees and customers of diverse backgrounds can work, shop, socialize, and build community. We are committed to providing courteous and professional service and equal protection to employees and customers alike. I have reviewed the video and audio from your visit and have spoken to that security guard. His interaction with you was based on specific observations regarding product and nothing else. These conversations occur routinely and respectfully with our diverse customer base." Let's be clear: no one else in that store experienced what we did. And we took note--there were no other Black people shopping that day. We didn't think much of it at first, because we believe we should be able to enter any space freely without being judged by the color of our skin. But that's not what happened. We were profiled the moment we walked in. When the security guard approached me, he recited every part of the store we had walked through--proving that he had been watching us the entire time. That's not routine. That's surveillance rooted in suspicion. And we were his only target. After we left the store, while peacefully waiting for our Uber, we were harassed again. The same guard came outside and told us to immediately leave the premises. Why? We were paying customers. We had done nothing wrong. I had even opened my small bag inside the store to prove I hadn't taken anything. So again--why were we being pushed off the property like criminals? Why did the guard then stand outside watching us to ensure we didn't return? Why did the store manager come outside and do absolutely nothing? Why did the guard allow a male bystander to get in our faces and shout vulgarities at us--while Zupan staff stood by and watched? Why did the Security Director conveniently ignore everything that happened outside the store, despite the fact that I clearly included it in my complaint? He threatened to call the police on us--for what? For being Black women standing on a sidewalk? He used his position to try to humiliate us. And Zupan Markets let him. This was not about store policy. It was about racial power and profiling. And it's unacceptable. We are grown, professional women. We moved with calm and dignity--and we were still treated like threats. Not for what we did, but for who we are. Zupan's claims to serve a diverse community. But what they really mean is: as long as you look the part. We will not be silenced. read more

Stopped by Zupan's flagship store. It is situated on the south edge of Portland's Northwest Alphabet District and just east of the entrance to Washington Park. I absolutely love this grocery store. The first time I went I had just happened to stop in, and they were having a huge sampling event. We got to try a ton of different foods from breads, wine, meats, dips, and even mini beef wellingtons. This is a high-end grocery store so the prices are higher than most, I would say comparable to a whole food if not a little more. However, the quality and selection of product makes this place worth it. We had just recently tried out their sandwich station, which allowed us to fill out a paper and they made it fresh for you. The staff is so friendly and helpful which is definitely something that stands out at this store, overall, this was the best grocery shopping experience I have ever had. Probably my favorite grocery store in the state, aside from Uwajimaya. Everything here is high quality, obviously selected with care and consideration by whatever entity runs this place. Whole Foods, New Seasons and the other upper echelon grocers are pretenders to the crown, by comparison. Prices are steeper than you would find at a Safeway, Kroger or WinCo, but you get what you pay for...and I mean that is the most positive way possible. If I were rich, I would shop here every day; alas, since I must budget my finances, I tend to only splurge here a few times a year. But when I do...good things are to be found, consumed, and enjoyed. Good luck finding parking on a Saturday morning :) I gave up and parked across the street. Apparently they have sampling between 11-3 pm and lots of folks show up for that. Overall good experience. Friendly staff and a wide variety of selection from niche products to fresh fruit and foods. The sampling stations featured some incredible food and drinks. Seattle has lots of great grocery stores but this one really impressed me. Just a really beautiful store. The deli area is amazing. Picked up several salads, pasta, a beef sandwich, cookies, donut holes, and a blueberry scone. Everything was delicious. Looking forward to my next visit. So much to choose from! read more

We didn't spend a ton of time here, but I wish we did. This place is a visual feast for the eyes, especially for foodies and gourmands. The custom-made sandwiches were yummy. All the salads in their to-go/deli section were creative and looked so fresh. The chocolate chip cookies from the café were fresh out of the oven with melty chocolately goodness. I visited the Burnside location and was almost immediately profiled by the security guard. I am not white and was the only person of color in the store. I've read multiple reviews, across other platforms, from customers having similar experiences at this location. I ended up speaking with one of the Managers, Carl, who did not take the complaint seriously. In fact, he minimized the incident and attempted, multiple times, to end the conversation. That sends a strong message that this behavior is not only accepted at this particular location but it's also taught by the management of this location, and therefore by Zupan's. There is a clear problem at this location. It's an absolute shame that Zupan's would rather eliminate an entire population of customers due to the color of their skin than benefit from doing what's right and setting a true example of what good looks like. read more

I have been coming to this store for more than 20 years. They have the best made to order sandwiches and fresh produce, and sometimes I can find items here that I can't find in other stores. They didn't have what I was looking for today (Fairchilds apple cider vinegar), but we we left with lunch, lol! Really sad that one person can ruin your whole day, and that I let her. Just returned from my shopping trip. As usual everyone that works there is so nice. Florist, produce, meat department and Deli could not have nicer folks. But I had the worst checkout experience: First my crostini box' lid kept popping open on check out and I asked her if she could secure it. She stated " why don't you just walk back and get yourself another box! " I asked her to please secure it with rubber bands and that irritated her. I had 3 pints of the Irish Ice cream Pints that had a big white sign taped to the cooler door stating " St. Patrick's Day Sale! Irish Ice cream pints 3 dollars off " When they rang up full price I told her about the sign. She looked at me and stated " St. Patrick's day is OVER! " So I said, then why is the big white paper still taped to the cooler door then. She got the paper and lectured me: "Can't you read the small print?! It says Sale Mar 12-17th. And today is the 19th!" I just swallowed. I am not a confrontational person and she had certainly " put me in my place ". I am a kind 65 year old lady who just purchased $341 in goods. She is a 25 to 30 year old young woman belittling me. And the sad thing is that I let her. read more

As an individual who believes in sourcing quality ingredients to make quality food, Zupan's is a favorite go to market for my specialty items and higher end ingredients. The two items I don't typically purchase from Zupan's are often meat (we go in on a cow each year and raise our own beef) and vegetables if I can get them at the PSU Saturday Farmers Market. Now that said - there are exceptions. One, every Christmas dinner tradition of Tomahawk Steaks; a must purchase at Zupan's. And two, mid week unplanned meals mean everything at Zupan's is on the list. While I have two Zupan's relatively close to our home, I find that I will often drive to this Zupan's as I like the layout, staff and variety of quality ingredients available. This store has a great bakery, deli, cheese selections (a favorite) and meats. I also appreciate I can get some of my favorite cooking ingredients such as Italian pastas, grains and variety of baking goods, sauces and condiments and spices and salts. My biggest concern is over buying when I visit because the shelves inspire my ideas for cooking. I bring a shopping list so I stay on point! (LOL) Now that's funny! Shopping here is like a field trip for someone who enjoys cooking. read more

Beautiful store in great selection of high-end products. Stopped in shortly before closing last night and was greeted with a terse warning that they were closing soon. Ok, fine. We are only after some quick dessert. Cashier was lovely, but the same gentleman that gave the warning stood there with an impatient look on his face checking at his watch, obviously waiting for us to leave. We exited as quickly as we could and felt so bad for a couple that came up and basically had the doors closed in their face as it was exactly 9 o'clock. I've worked retail and our golden rule was always to stay open an extra few minutes and open an extra few minutes. Generally an overpriced and inconsistent quality grocery store. I used to go there monthly but stopped on the day I went in to pick up a salad in the deli case and was actually followed by a Security Guard. I asked to speak to the manager and was told by him that "older women like you who drive nice cars are the ones who shoplift the most from our store." Unbelievable. True story. The employees here profile people who don't look like they have the money to be shopping at this store. Every time I have gone here, I've gotten looks/have been followed but I am able to write it off. This time it was too far because a worker made my mom very very uncomfortable. My mom and I went in to this store with my boyfriend, while I was looking for fruit my mom asked to use the bathroom. The worker looked over at me and my boyfriend, deliberately took her time to look us up and down and asked my mom if we're shopping here. When my mom said that we are, the worker looked me and my boyfriend up and down AGAIN and said 'oh ok' at this point my mom was very uncomfortable and said never mind, she didn't want to use a prissy bathroom, to which a male worker laughed at my mom and another female worker very loudly said 'I knew it' 3 times to us as we left the store. Hot bar food is great but the customer service needs attending to. I usually give the chefs or workers grace in seeing how busy they are preparing the food but today was embarrassing. I'm waiting patiently at the hot bar and there's about 6 people in the back, one of the people who looks like the head chef is clearly standing in my direction, and with how many people that are back there I'm surprised there wasn't even a "hey we'll be right with you", instead me and another customer just stood there being ignored.. finally a young lady called the attention of two of the men who were in their deep conversation and looked at me and another shopper waiting. All im saying is it's not that hard to let someone know you'll be right with them. I get it, i work in customer service as well, im not asking for a red carpet. I've noticed this multiple times. Please train your staff. Either train them or pay them more. Not to shoot myself in the foot but for how expensive the market is you would think zupans would hold itself up to higher standards. This location seems a bit off to me, I think it's their service and attention to detail. It felt like they didn't want my business, I was in the Wine department and not one person (there was a person standing 8 - 10ft away) asked me if I needed assistance until I walked up to them and asked about a certain brand. I know what this might sound like, but if you know about this store, you know this is what they do the best. Same thing happened in produce, it's not like they're understaffed, that I could see or busy, in fact it was 830am and very few people were in there. One more time at check out, me- good morning - Checker had zero response, I was thinking, is it me?? Anyway, weird vibe at this location. All & All, I usually don't write about these kind of experiences, but this one was like I was in the movie Get Out. I did have a mask on.... naw that can't be it, right? ...
