Short Version: Broke tons of stuff. Quoted $800, showed up and said that it shouldn't take too long. Billed $1400. Not even remotely competent Longer Version: Talked to Curtis. He seemed great and he gave what I thought was a fair quote. We were moving a basement suite and had 40-50 boxes and few other large items (dresser, wardrobe etc.) They showed up early, seemed courteous and professional. Assessed the situation and said that everything looked good. We had everything in boxes, labelled and organized. They said 2 hours to get it out at the most. Then things went downhill...fast. The two workers started arguing that about whether they should bring another guy to help. The one said they shouldn't but eventually they asked me if they should. I let them know it was fine because I like to trust people to do a good job. They said it wouldn't be more expensive because although I have to pay for each person, they would be more efficient. Reasonable. Noon rolls around and they're still not packed. Remember they said 2 hours tops then brought in another guy to help. So, it should be way under 2 hours, but we are at 4+. I started to notice that the new guy they brought has been on his phone most of the time. Seems like he's putting out fires things for Low Budget Moving. Fair enough, but not really something I want to pay for. The other guys don't really seem to be moving boxes and working hard when I see them in my suite, but when I go up, then their just chatting and doing nothing. I think this was the chief the reason that 2 hours for 2 people became 5 hours for 3 people. That is on the cost side of things, but that's not all. When they showed up they said they would insure only solid wood furniture to be moved without damage. They didn't want to insure cheap IKEA furniture or already packed boxes. That seems fair to me. They broke 2 solid wood pieces of furniture. Replaced none and offered no compensation. One table they admitted to breaking. They just fell on it and broke it. Admitted it and did nothing. The China cabinet they refused to admit they broke but kind of in the same way that a child with chocolate on their face rufuses to admin they are responsible for the missing chocolate. They took some parts of the cabinet and said they'd look into replacing it, but then ghosted me. Lastly, they just sucked at moving. I have a hundred stories from the day but the one that illustrates it best is this. We asked them to move a wardrobe into a corner that they had placed in the middle of the room. It need to be moved about 2 meters. They were struggling to move it, crawling around on their knees, pushing it then putting it down, then and trying to figure out how to move it. Eventually after my wife and watching for a while, we just moved it. It took about 15 seconds for us (minus the few minutes of watching them struggle to do their job). We aren't strong, just healthy 30-year-olds who aren't getting paid by the hour. All in all they were just not competent at the basic task, did not actually work, and broke or damaged a lot of items. I had somewhat of a complicated move a full storage unit and a second location for pick up. I said I had a budget within the range he gave me and wanted to stay close to it as possible. Levi gave me a call prior to meeting me and said that they were there. David, Christopher and Levi were outstanding. They were quick, careful with my possessions, were quick, kind and courteous. I was only $22 over my budget. I was happy to tip them so they could buy themselves a sub and a beer for a job. Well done. To start I want to preface by saying that when hiring a company called "Low Budget" you have to expect there are going to be a compromise or two... I understand that. However, this was a fail above and beyond just a few cut corners and compromises in quality. It was inept if not incompetent. We moved a two bedroom plus den condo into a larger town house. 100% of the personal items and effects were gone, not a item in a drawer or cupboard was left nor a single box. If we could move it, we moved it. It was only the furniture. I will say there were two big pieces, a king-sized bed and frame and a two-piece large office desk set. These things would require some disassembly to move. Luckily, WE had tools because they didn't have so much as a nail file between them. Nor did they have enough blankets... in fact the only thing they had in supply was tape. So be it. I provided the tools. THEN I understood why they didn't have them, they didn't know what they were doing. To move the desk would require removing the door to the office. A standard hollow core cheap interior door. They started unscrewing the hinges from the wall. NOT ONE of them knew that door hinges were held on with pins and could be driven out simply. I had to show them. One of these movers had been doing it for I think he claimed four+ years and it seems never once saw or had to remove a door. Amazing. In the end I could have endured those things, after all 'low budget' right? Maybe. The experienced guy was also anti moving dolly believing carrying things down long halls, to an elevator out a elevator lobby and into the truck was the way to go. On this I can speak with a little more authority having managed a high-rise condo for 15+ years and supervising hundreds of moves. Dollying things is the way to go. Carrying went very slow... as you can imagine. A few times I went down to see how they were doing at the 'truck'. They didn't know that from where I park I could sit in my car and watch them. Watch two of them goof off while one guy (a student I believe) busted his rear trying to do what he could by himself. I am not a terribly assertive guy but I did finally speak to them and the pace increased, but I should have watched closer. Things moved OUT of the condo at a much better pace, to stop and build up in the hallway until a Strata member had to say something. Ahh, the Strata. The condo gives you four hours for a move and this is not unusual. Where I used to work we also gave a four hour window, this was to allow two moves in a single 8 hour work day. We had to pay an extra fee as the four hour mark came and went. As that four hour point dwindled towards the horizon behind us the 'low' budget started to balloon. Between the five and six hour point the truck was loaded... but suffered a mechanical issue at the last moment. Another hour to resolve. Then they arrived at the destination. They were able to unload much faster, that's because we agreed to pay for extra movers to help since time was ticking by and 'fast' is a word that would never have been applied to our crew. Plus it was starting to get late in the day, a move that started at 9am was still going after 6pm but as afternoon dwindled into evening it finally was completed. Because it is 'low budget' the damage they did to items I have to swallow. A proper supply of blankets would have prevented that but... low budget. What was the budget? Well, they estimated $800-$1200 for the move. In the end it only cost $1800. Or 50% MORE than the high point of that estimate and a lot of that was the cost of that inept, inexpert, untrained and lackadaisical labor. THAT is the final summation of low budget moving. Worst moving experience I've ever had, an absolute nightmare. Booked a month in advance for an 8am move only to be met the day of with "we forgot to enter your info, we will be there around 1pm". 1pm rolls around, "3pm" 3pm comes and goes "we will be there by 4". They finally show up at 4:15 and are shocked that they are moving furniture, assuming I only had boxes. Confusing considering it was confirmed twice (on the day I booked, and the day of the move) how many and which pieces of furniture were being moved. Arrive at the new place and wait 30 minutes for the movers to arrive with my stuff. They come out with McDonald's cups saying "sorry, we were hungry" (they stopped on the way to eat with all of my things in the back of the truck). Did my move, and smashed my tv in the process. Didn't tell me about the tv until the last minute and all they could offer was $100 off the move, which I reluctantly accepted considering I was already very irritated. They offered to dispose of the tv for me. I heard them leaving and they plugged my tv into the wall by my elevator and said "hell yeah it still works". I guess they're going to keep or sell it now. Overall, I was charged for 3.5 hours. That's including the extra 30 minutes it took for them to go out for their lunch break. I have never had such a horrible experience with a moving company. Avoid them at all costs. Pay the little bit extra and get a moving company who cares about you and your belongings. read more
