When we had to suddenly empty my late mother-in-law's large, overstuffed storage room, Big Steel Box came to the rescue. When we phoned, we got a real human who was decent, knowledgeable and helpful. The cost of their largest container was 1/5 the monthly rent at the storage facility even though it held the same amount of stuff. Our container was promptly delivered. I was clean with a dark wood laminate floor. We had the option of keeping it in our yard or having it carted away to be stored in their yard in the lower mainland, where we could request it be made available on fairly short notice. We chose to keep in our yard. In either case, you use your own lock. We used it for 5 years. It kept everything clean, bug-free and rodent-free (We have a lot of rats in Steveston.) The mice had been into the storage facility we used earlier, making a bit of a mess. (Also, rodent urine and droppings, once dry can put bacteria humans can catch into the air, so best avoided.) When it came time to empty the container, a quick call to an equally pleasant Big Steel Box representative meant it was picked up when we wanted it gone. Since you pay for delivery and pick-up when you first order it, there were absolutely no added costs. An ethical company that does what it says it will. Highly recommend for moving, short term or long term storage. To me, if you don't need fast, regular access to your goods, having them store your container is a great alternative to a storage facility. Would definitely use them again. read more

I ordered a container from Big Steel Box with the explicit instructions that I needed to be present on delivery for correct placement. This was clearly stated in the work order. Container was delivered without me present & placed facing the wrong direction. I have spent three weeks trying to get this moved (during which I can't use the container) as I can't properly access the doors to load directly to/from a vehicle. Big Steel Box has refused to be accountable & will only turn the container 90degrees if I pay them another $120 delivery fee to fix their mistake. I WOULD NEVER recommend Big Steel Box. read more

I called BigSteelBox in April to get a quote. I needed to store some things for a few months as we had sold a house and were moving to a cottage that as yet we hadn't found. But we were looking in the Ontario area. Although they were more expensive than the other guys, Hannah was very personal, incredibly accommodating, and responded to my various requests in a very timely manner. She assured me that regardless of the slope of the driveway etc, they could absolutely handle whatever needed to be done. I would give her a five out of five rating for her customer service. The box was delivered on time and set up efficiently. I was a bit surprised at the condition of the box. It was quite rusty on the exterior, and the interior had a few large grease spots on the floor. But it was adequate. I would have given it a three out of five. We stored it for a few months and then requested that it be delivered to a cottage community, a couple hours north. This is where everything went sideways. I spoke with someone by the name of Matt Forest. His customer service style was telling me all the reasons why it probably couldn't be delivered. I showed him a picture and he was adamant that there wasn't room to drop the cube. No matter what I said he kept repeating that it probably couldn't be done and it would be my fault and I would have to incur the cost of driving the trailer all the way up there and then all the way back to the yard. Even though I assured him that I had as much space in this driveway as I did in the original driveway where it was picked up, he continued to make an issue. Finally, I assumed responsibility, told him I would be there, and if it didn't work I understood the concerns. The contractor they use, Ross Towing, delivered the box. The driver was incredibly proficient, had no problems, was very professional, and manoeuvred the box in to the driveway quickly and effectively. He recommended that we use him once it had been emptied to pick it up again, because he was very comfortable with the placement of the truck. A few days later I called to arrange for the cube to be picked up. I requested at that time to have Ross Towing pick it up. When they sent me the paperwork it indicated that they were picking up a 20 foot trailer. I called and spoke with Matt, that maybe he misunderstood, as a 20' trailer would be a problem but this was a small 10' trailer. He said it was just a typo and that it would require the same size truck.They didn't have a date available for about a week, so the empty pod set in the driveway. They gave us a date and said the pick up time would be somewhere between 8 and 5 PM. We didn't receive any further notification, and when I tried to follow up they had no idea where the driver was. At 6:30 p.m. the driver finally showed up. He had an incredibly long truck, far longer than used by Ross Towing for the drop off. It was a different towing company. He jumped out of his truck, said that his steering was old and decrepit and wouldn't accommodate the maneuvering, jumped back in his truck and drove away. Pretty sure he was just in a hurry to get home for dinner. Even though it was an hour and a half after the final deadline, and we had been waiting since eight that morning, 9 1/2 hours. The problem was, our street was being asphalt and paved the next day. Because they couldn't accommodate us for a week, the pick up date was almost conflicting with roadwork in the neighbourhood Matt in customer service deserves a one out of five, and the pick up towing company, (not sure of the name but they're out of Strathroy), deserve a zero out of five. I put in a frantic call to Big Steel Box and spoke with Erica Pilcher. I explained the situation to her. At this point it was around 7 PM and the paving company was to be starting in approximately 12 hours, where the road would be unavailable to drive on. I don't know how this girl did it but she pulled everything together. She committed to me to do her ultimate best and did just that. She contacted Ross Towing in Ontario to have a driver there by 8 AM the next morning. She was in constant contact with me, continued to follow up, continued to reassure me that things were being put in place. After my huge disappointment and let down with the company, it took a lot of convincing but I put my faith in her. Ross Towing arrived a bit late the next morning, the road pavers were standing by waiting for the dump truck to drop asphalt in front of my house when the tow truck arrived. Once again, Ross Towing was spectacular. They manoeuvred the truck into position, picked up the moving pod, attached it, and were on their way. What should have been a very simple exercise got completely messed when Matt got involved, and neglected to request the correct vehicle. The stress this caused for Erica and for myself was completely unnecessary. So disappointing to have amazing people working hard, and then having one individual mess everything up. read more

I would highly recommend Big Steel Box for any moves,We recently bought a house in Parksville,B.C. on Vancouver Island and needed to move our 3-bedroom house from Coquitlam,B.C. They dropped off the 20" container in front of our house and we took our time loading it and was not feeling rushed in moving, after it was loaded we called for them to pick up the unit to store at thier secure location for three weeks before we took possesion of our new house. We had it delivered and again took our time to unload it without the pressure of rushing as you would with a moving company. After a close to perfect start a big letdown at the end! We chose to store a lot of our household in a container when we were "in between houses" and the service leading to signing with BigSteelBox was excellent. Quotes were turned around superfast and delivery of the container to our house was perfect. Great flexibility to accommodate for changes in picking the container up was much appreciated. So a close to perfect start. Now I wanted to get the container delivered to our new home and guess what: The delivery of the container was up by almost 60% compared to the quote submitted approximately 6 months before. The service rep explained that they had to move the container to another yard and thus larger distance resulting in higher prices. Needless to say there was NO communication in the meantime to inform us or forbid asking if we were OK with that change in plans. After a "generous" rebate that made the price increase only 30% and still $120 more than quoted there was no offer or intention to come closer to where they quoted. Sure the quote is valid for a limited time (which they did not fail to stress it in every email), however that is far from a service that I expected. Big company vs. small individual. What can you expect and in the end they hold your property hostage so what leverage do you have? Thanks much BigSteelBox! Guaranteed to not get a recommendation from my end - unless you are in for some surprises... Update: The following day I received a phone call from BigSteelBox apologizing for the previous communication and revising the invoice to the previously quoted amount. So all good? Mostly! I started the booking process about a month before my move but they were not able to guarantee my preferred dates. Which was totally understandable but once it got closer to the actual date they were still unsure whether they were able to deliver on time. No one calls and no one had answers. I received a call the day of my move telling me that they have a box for the following monday. If you have plans to move with BigSteelBox, I would HIGHLY RECONSIDER USING THEM. If they don't have the containers/storage boxes then you should let your customers know but waiting until last day? I would NEVER GO WITH THEM. Hi this is a bit of a belated review, as I had Bog Steel Box drop off, pick up move my goods, and drop off at my new place in BC 6 months ago. Drop off was on time and great, with training on how to open and close and secure doors etc. I bought my own shelves as I had a plan on how to get all my stuff in, but they rent shelves, and in retrospect I should have done that. I even drove my Jeep in and had it transported in the box, packing stuff beside, on top and under. BSB told me the best way to do it. it was picked up within a good time slot, and delivered as well. all for one price quoted up front. No surprises. And no hurry, they gave lots of time. For a big move like mine, the price was reasonable, no hassle and it gave me peace of mind, which I really needed. I highly recommend them. Do read the website thoroughly and plan space, vertically as well as floor space wise, it helps on moving day to be well prepped. of course if you can store your box onsite, you have lots of time. Mine was on the street and I took advantage of a long weekend to give me extra time, but still it's a huge job if you do it yourself with friends. read more

Big Steel Box does not know the meaning of the word integrity. They would rather not honour their commitments than be honest and truthful. A number of months ago, I entered into a contract with Big Steel Box. They brought the container to our home as expected, and picked it up when we had filled it. We were moving to another community so stored the container at their Abbotsford site for a number of months. We knew we would need to have the container delivered once we purchased a house. When we did purchase a home, we asked them to deliver the container. Then we were stunned. When we had asked them about storing our goods in one of their containers, we also asked for a price to deliver the container to our new location. They gave us a cost. It was higher than expected, but the move included a ferry, so we agreed with the price they gave us. This price was one of the reasons we agreed to use their container service. Then, when I asked to have the container delivered, the price changed dramatically. They agreed with me that they had given me the initial estimate, but refused to honour the price they had given me. We ended up paying hundreds of dollars more than their original estimate. I tried for weeks to get them to honour their original price, but they would not do it. I was terribly disappointed. Big Steel Box is not a company of integrity. They can't be trusted. They gave us a price and then would not honour the price. They lied to us. My recommendation: Do not deal with this company. They can't be trusted to keep their word. read more

We recently used BigSteelBox for the first time for a move from BC to AB & they were great. Our rep, Myles, was attentive, friendly & always punctual with getting back to us (an excellent Customer Service guy... hope his bosses see this!). A couple other times when I called, the other 2 reps were also helpful and friendly. All 3 drivers (John, Darren & ?) were also smiley and very easy to deal with (not always the case with drivers). I would highly recommend BigSteelBox as an alternative to moving companies (approx. 1/2 the price, although you do have to pack the Box yourself) or renting a truck (which IS a bit cheaper BUT you don't have to do the driving, pay for gas, etc.... & you get the Box for a month rather than 4 days, which was the time allotted for a BC to AB move from a well-known truck rental co.).
