    a flight of beers
    Matthew J.

The last brewery on my Rochester brewing-spree was LTS Brewing. There was a bags tournament going on, but I was there for a flight of beer and just a flight of beer (I'm no good at bags anyway). The space is large, but cozy. They had cocktails, seltzers, and of course beer on tap. Some of the cocktails sounded delicious and I almost pulled the trigger on an Amaretto Sour inspired seltzer cocktail; however, I stuck with a flight of four beers. Inspiration An American IPA recommended as the guy next to me at the bar's favorite. It is a combination of American and New Zealand hops in both the brewing kettle and in the fermenter (dry hop). Medium pine and melon, medium-low bitterness, and medium-low malt. Popped A Cream Ale brewed in collaboration with Chaotic Good Brewing using 50lb of air popped popcorn. Medium-low malt flavor with a hint of sweetness (sweet bread almost), popcorn provides a lovely complexity to the bear, and there is very low perceived bitterness. My favorite of the four! Great job done by both breweries on this. Biergarten A good old fashioned Helles with a slight sweetness, spicy hop profile, and low bitterness. Clear, crisp, and easy to drink. Bock Bock Bock As you can guess, a Bock brewed with SEVEN malts. The Dark German Munich is most apparent and it is fermented with a bock lager yeast. A darker beer, but still lighter bodied with a ton of complex malt flavors like caramel, toasted bread crust, and even a hint of molasses. _______________________

Our 2nd stop in Rochester after grabbing some grub and beer at Forager. It's just a few minutes down the road. Since it was earlyish on a Sunday, there weren't many people inside (too hot to sit outside!). Actually I don't know the brewery scene in Rochester, so maybe that was typical. Anyway, props to the server who lost his shit when he saw my dragon, that's probably the most severe reaction I've ever seen to my harmless 20 inch long reptile :) More bare bones decor in this brewery than most but that's OK, if the beer is good I'll drink it in a run down shack if I need to. We sat at the bar and ordered a flight. Trying to remember what exactly was on tap but alas. I know we had the kolsch, I believe there was also a tripel, and the crtl+alt+delete plus cherry and berry infusions of one of their base beers. The beers were solid, the cherry infusion was probably my fav. My husband got a bowl of the popcorn but put way too much salt in it and made it inedible, thanks babe. We left happy and full of good beer. Rochester seems to be putting on a good show of craft beer - cheers!

Nice low-key place with great beer! Not very crowded, but plenty of seating- bar, high top and low top tables, and some couches! They have free popcorn, several party-type games like Cards Against Humanity, and tvs (but no cable). They dont serve food, but you can order delivery there or bring your own food! Great place to get some people together, we had a potluck. I'm picky about my beer, and they had so much options that I really enjoyed! Great variety, including a couple IPAs to some German styles. I got a flight to start ($6 for 4 filled-to-the-rim tasters) and that was definitely the way to go, to figure out what I liked best, which ended up being Karma their Kolsch. It had a great note of honey. They also serve craft sodas, and you can get growlers of the beer to go for $12.

    A flight...$6.

Pricey beers. Emailed asking about Sunday night BINGO, but they never responded. Came in for open mic, which was lame.

Best IPAs in town. Their "inspiration IPA" is probably one of the best IPAs in MN. Service is always great.

For the price and the quantity, I expected it might have been lower quality but everything lookedCaesar Salad amazing. It tasted even better! Especially the Cast Iron Mac N Cheese. It is creamy and comforting with a wonderful contrasting finishing crumb. Then we got beef on top which added a sweet filling protein. I also felt good after eating. I did not feel bloated, even though I ate until I was full. That is a sign of fresh and healthy ingredients. I would come back to try more of the menu at any time!

She never left us waiting for service and offered some great suggestions on the menu. While we know this is a brewery, they also serve batch cocktails, instead of a full bar. We started with their version of an old fashioned, which wasn't our first choice but they were actually tasty albeit a bit sweet. Since the weather was below 0, I craved something hot and comforting. I ordered the Beef Stroganoff which was tasty. Included braised local beef, mushrooms, onions, garlic, parmesan, cream sauce, dill, house-made fettuccini, topped with sour cream. The sauce was light so you didn't feel like it weighed you down. My husband ordered the birria tacos. Beef brisket, white onions, mozzarella, cilantro, corn tortilla, green salsa, beef broth, lime Although they were tasty, they were quite greasy. Prices were reasonable. I would come back again and try the pizza.

They are on a 5 barrel system from Portland Kettle Works which allows for both experimentation and some staple beers. Beertender choice in my flight was the Hugs & Kisses Fruited Wheat Ale - which I won't complain about. Thesis Pieces: A Blonde Ale brewed with Peanut Butter and has an addition of Lactose. Light bodied, which you don't see for a peanut beer very often. Doughy malt and a nutty flavor go hand in hand balanced by a sweetness from the lactose. A PB beer you can drink even in the hottest weather! Toasty-Weizen A German Hefeweizen conditioned on freshly toasted coconut. Similar to my other choices, light bodied packed with flavor. Traditional banana and clove Hefeweizen flavors are balanced by a medium toasted coconut flavor that doesn't take over the Hefe aromas / flavors.  Bangers Only: A Cold IPA dry hopped with Rakau, Vic Secret, and Wakatu hops. A lighter bodied IPA and brilliantly clear. Medium-high bitterness with a melon / lemon zest flavor on finish. Hugs and Kisses: A Fruited Wheat Ale that the beertender chose as my fourth beer in my flight. Notes of guava, tangerine, and blood orange. Medium body with just a hint of acidity, but mostly on the fruity side. Enjoyable on the patio! _____________________

Lazy Day IPA: A Juicy New England IPA with medium citrus and medium-low bitterness. A hint of spice and a bit of sweetness from a lactose addition. Frontage Road Toasted Coconut: A Stout with toasted coconut additions - a variation on their standard Frontage Road Stout. Medium-high coconut and toasted nut flavors, low dark coffee bitterness, and hint of vanilla sweetness. Body on the lighter side which makes it possible to enjoy on a warm sunny day. Golden Coffee Ale: A Golden Ale with medium-high coffee bitterness, light black pepper, and mild nutty / floral finish. Very refreshing with strong coffee flavors in a lighter bodied beer without being astringent and my favorite of the four! Serendipity: A house made Ginger Beer sitting at 4.6% ABV. You don't see a Ginger Beer on tap very often so I had to grab it. This one had lemon and lime added, and they use it as a base for ginger beer based mixed drinks as well. This had a lighter ginger flavor with high carbonation. Would love to try it in a cocktail! ______________________
