I've been taking weekly lessons from her for over a year now. Lu has helped me learn and evolve naturally based on my level of expertise. Every class is interesting, as she also mixes theory and technique into everything you play so you don't spend time doing only tedious exercises. She also helps you problem solve difficult parts of songs during the lessons so you can learn how to have more efficient practice time at home. I started taking lessons with Lu for about three months now. She has great teaching style. Instead of going with one generic lesson plan for everyone, she designs it very specific to the student, based on what the student likes, which areas the student is naturally good at and which areas need the student needs more practice for. She's very friendly, so sessions are very casual which helped me get over my nerves starting this overwhelming undertaking of learning Piano and music in general. I had no experience in music theory or any instrument before I started and even though I'm still very very far from playing at the level I want to, I feel very confident that it's achievable with her help based on the progress I made so far. I have studied with Lu for four months. She is both kind and rigorous--a good combination in a teacher. I took piano lessons for years when I was younger but had not studied in awhile. I studied piano a bit in college, and have now been working with Lu for about a year. Lu's very patient and kind, and is very knowledgeable of both technique and repertoire pedagogy. She's been very good for me in helping me with my technique, especially where I didn't quite grasp things in school. Lu is a great teacher and very easy to work with. My daughter (10 yrs old) has been training with Lu for close to a year. Within this time, my daughter has shown great improvement with her sight reading as well as technical playing. Until Lu, the sight reading was something that had not been reinforced with her prior teachers as my daughter has a knack for being able to play songs/notes using her hearing and Lu was quick to recognize this and worked on improving this important aspect immediately. I'm a 40 year old beginner piano student. Lu tries to understand why I want to play the piano and helps me reach my goals. She teaches me what "I want to learn"and keeps it fun. We have a 6-y.o. boy who has had about 6 months of lessons and an 8-y.o. girl who has had 2 years of lessons, each with a different piano teacher. Both children had been slow to progress with their previous teachers, despite daily practice. My son in particular was unable to count the beats and had very poor hand positions. During the summer we tried Lu and another new piano teacher each for a month. Lu is a very effective teacher who is tuned into the ability and needs of each of her students. Within just the first lessons, the kids had noticeably improved their technique. She is kind and firm in asking her students to be self-accountable for their assignments. The children enjoyed their lessons with Lu. Ultimately, we decided to go with the other new teacher, because Lu's studio is further from our house, and West L.A. traffic in the afternoon is not the easiest to sit through. However, as a piano teacher, Lu is excellent, and my wife is impressed and recommends her highly. read more
