I am not musical myself, and I will admit I was worried that neither of my kids would last very long in lessons but that was primarily based on all the stories you hear of mean piano teachers who make the instrument feel like work (or, maybe the ideas about such teachers you get from movies and books). Jane is nothing like that. Instead, she shares her joy in music with both of my kids (and me), and does a remarkable job encouraging them to learn and grow as musicians. I think what I like best about Jane's teaching style is that it is consistently kind but tailored to each of my kids. My 9-year-old can be always seeking to do the next thing, or learn the next thing, or get things right on the first try, and Jane talks with him about staying in the moment, about rejecting perfectionism as it can hinder you, and about slowing down and relishing where you are, instead of what's next. Meanwhile, my 5-year-old (who was mostly interested in pursuing piano because his older brother was) can be goofy (as 5-year-olds are) and needs more help grasping the basics. Jane is able to guide him with exercises that are at his level, and make it fun for him. She taps into his artistic personality, and I think that also really helps. Based on my own kids' experiences with her, I'd assume that Jane gets to know each of her students, and works to develop them according to their personalities and temperaments. (During the recital, her students -- a range of ages and skills -- played a range of instruments and songs that suited them, and Jane had specific insights about each one of the kids.) In all, I am amazed at my kids' progress on piano, and we will definitely continue our lessons with Jane. I'm awed to see my children learn music in a way I never did, and I know it's so valuable to them not only to gain a skill but to gain a patient, smart, and kind guide in the process. Two teachers teach each class and they both play musical instruments during sessions. We usually sing songs and do lots of fun, interactive kid activities and the teachers sneak in some basic music tidbits for the kids. One of the best parts is that they introduce new music instruments each week and they let the children play with THE REAL THING too--one by one. So far, we've seen the accordion, violin, guitar, drums, electric bass, cell, piano, maracas, and more. The teachers are outstanding (Kudos to teachers Jesse and Jeremy) and the location is great--inside the Westside Pavilion mall so we get free parking and some shopping time after the 40-minute class. There are different levels/classes for children of different ages. It's great because children are introduced to music at such an early age and when it's time for them to pick up an instrument, they won't be picking blindly because they know different instruments and would be picking the one they actually liked best based on experience. Watching him play while he teaches me a solo is so inspiring! He is so well-versed in every genre from rock, blues, jazz and R&B to funk, pop and everything in between. Not only can he teach any style but he also showed me how to use my effects pedals and get an incredible tone from my amp. Besides being an incredibly talented guitar player and gifted teacher, he's as nice as they come. Such a fun, laid-back and charismatic guy. So fun to be around! This is a review for the camp only. Some things to know if you put your child in their camp. I…read moredon't usually like to post negative reviews but I do want other parents to know about the following things so they can be aware. 1) On their camp advertisements they mention instruction in many different instruments. What isn't specified is that they only have a couple different instruments to learn on if your child does not own that instrument themselves. So unless your kid has their own Oboe, Cello, Flute etc they can't get lessons. I think they have guitar and violin on hand. Thus, i would not recommend this place for a summer intro to an instrument unless you own said instrument or you double check they have your instrument ahead of time. They will say it's on the paperwork the child needs to bring their own instrument but they don't send you that paperwork until the night before camp starts. 2) They watch a movie every single day. I don't think any parent wants their kid watching tv every day at a camp they pay good money for. Why not have other activities for the kids for breaks from music? Maybe Let them run around in the park longer, or play some games, or talk amongst themselves and make a friend. Another note about the movie watching -- they show the kids PG13 movies. And if your kid isn't allowed to watch PG13 movies they will sit your chilld with the much younger children and watch a disney movie or cartoon. This is not great for those kids 7-11 whose parents may not want their kids watching PG13 movies but also don't want their kid to feel humiliated watching cartoons with much younger kids and not being around their peers in their age group. When my child was there, there were no kids ages 13 and up so it was baffling to me that they were catering to the kids whose parents allowed their young children to watch PG-13 movies.

When I sit on the couch waiting to pick up my son, I hear laughter, enthusiasm, singing and of course music. It warms my soul. My son loved 3rd grade chorus (and the complimentary bus shuttle is a huge plus for kids and parents!). We are currently taking private flute lessons with Sierra - so far so good! She is patient, kind and helping my son make the ever important first step, a sound! The school music program is great but with so many children my son needs extra one-on-one instruction and this business fits the bill. Looking into the musical theater next ... to be continued!
