Nice enough guy and seemed to know what he was doing. I was so convinced that I hired them twice for the same ongoing issue, so I paid a total of $5,000. At trial on the last date, I specifically asked Mr. Hunter to make sure that I would get a reasonable portion of my deposit back. He assured me that all the boxes were checked correctly and to make sure that I left the place broom swept. I also had another case with this company and so my other attorney was trying to prepare something and he needed to include my deposit return, but couldn't find it in the documents submitted. I called Mr. Hunter and was explaining to me that it was right there...then he pulled up the document himself and noticed he missed something and that my deposit was forfeited. He said, "sorry, I messed up" and got off the phone. My deposit was $5,000, what I had paid them! I reached out to Mr. Martinez to report the issue. He said Mr. Hunter was on vacation and would follow up once he got back on the 16th of July. It is the 27th. I have reached out twice and now Mr. Martinez will not respond. So my recommendation is to stay away from this law firm. I understand that mistakes happen, but take accountability, and more importantly, follow up. The fact that they have done neither shows that integrity is not their strong suit, and that makes them HORRIBLE at best!

My case took much longer than I expected and became increasingly frustrating. I initially spoke with Deborah R. only once. After that, Rebekka T. began communicating with me and repeatedly requested additional paperwork and information. I called the office and spoke with Maria V., who was very kind and helpful. I explained that I thought I was working directly with Deborah, and Maria told me that was no longer the case. Unfortunately, when I later tried to contact Maria again, I was told that she no longer worked there. Throughout my case, I was repeatedly asked for more and more paperwork and information, resulting in additional billable time. I found myself spending a significant amount of time going back and forth providing personal information and answering questions that I felt had already been addressed. Ultimately, I incurred a large legal bill, which I paid, but I felt that I had very little to show for the amount of time and money spent. Then I began receiving communication from Andrea L., who said she was assisting Rebekka. She called me and asked many of the same questions I had already answered for Deborah and Rebekka. This was particularly difficult because, at the time, I was dealing with serious health issues and undergoing chemotherapy. I was exhausted and not feeling well, and repeatedly having to revisit sensitive personal information was extremely stressful. I also received a bill listing Andrea L. as a senior attorney and charging me for one hour. I had documented the telephone conversation, and my records showed that the call lasted approximately 22 minutes. I became concerned when I noticed that the phone number associated with Andrea had a Georgia area code. I researched her credentials because I wanted to understand why I was being charged a senior attorney rate. At the time, I was unable to find a California license for her and found information indicating that she was an attorney based in Georgia. I questioned Rebekka about why I was being charged a senior attorney fee for this time and asked for clarification. She offered to discount the bill, which she did. I also copied Deborah R. on my email because she was the attorney I originally believed I was working with. Rebekka responded that I was her client and did not need to discuss the matter with anyone else. I found that response concerning, particularly given my questions about who was handling my case and how I was being billed. Eventually, I decided I needed to find another attorney. Finding a real estate attorney who was willing and able to take on my complicated case was not easy. Fortunately, I found a different real estate attorney who was compassionate, responsive, and communicated directly with me. He immediately reviewed my situation and explained that we could resolve the matter without going to court and unnecessarily increasing attorney fees. The difference in my experience was remarkable. He was determined, honest, considerate, and gave me peace of mind knowing that my case was being handled properly. He ultimately helped bring the matter to a successful conclusion. I am sharing my experience not to discourage anyone from making their own decision, but to encourage people to ask questions before hiring an attorney: Who will actually be handling your case? Who will be communicating with you? What billing rates will apply? And who exactly is being billed for the work? When you are already dealing with a difficult legal situation and especially when you are dealing with serious personal circumstances. You need an attorney who communicates clearly, treats you with compassion, and gives you confidence that your case is being handled carefully. I hired Mr. Dunaev for an urgent construction-defect, insurance, and surety matter involving serious safety and code issues at my home. I ultimately paid approximately $8,000 in connection with this representation and the related fee dispute/arbitration outcome. I hired an attorney because I needed real legal strategy, urgency, insurance/surety pressure, and protection for my family and home. In my opinion, I did not receive anything close to the level of service or value I expected. What I mainly received was a representation letter, one demand letter, and billing for reviewing emails. One of the most frustrating things was that, after weeks of asking for surety action, the demand letter to the surety was not the focused, effective demand I expected. In my view, it did not meaningfully move the matter forward or reflect the full context and urgency of the situation. I also felt that during communications involving the liability insurance side, Mr. Dunaev mostly just listened or reviewed emails without asking the kinds of questions I expected an attorney to ask. To me, it felt like he was more of a silent observer than an advocate. I did not hire a lawyer to simply read emails after charging thousands of dollars. I hired a lawyer to understand the case, ask hard questions, build strategy, apply pressure, and protect me. One of the most upsetting parts for me was that communications occurred with the contractor side about the contractor potentially returning to the property or resuming work. That was not the strategy I wanted, and I do not understand why communications about that issue occurred while I was paying for legal representation, especially when I did not want that approach. This was not a minor disagreement for me. Based on my records and my experience, the contractor was later subject to a two-year restraining order after a threat involving a gun against my family. Given that context, I still do not understand why my attorney would communicate with the contractor side or entertain the possibility of the contractor returning to my property instead of focusing on protecting me, pursuing insurance/surety pressure, and building an enforcement strategy. After the representation ended, I had to move the matter forward myself. I pursued the CSLB complaint, contacted LADBS, contacted OSHA, built the written safety/code record, pursued insurance and surety issues, served discovery, prepared motion work, and continued the civil case myself. Those are exactly the kinds of legal and enforcement steps I expected my attorney to help lead. For the amount I paid, I expected legal judgment, strategy, urgency, insurance/surety pressure, and meaningful action. Instead, I felt I received mostly email-review billing, a basic representation letter, and one demand letter that did not move the case in the way I needed. In my opinion, the work did not justify the fee. I felt unsupported, unprotected, and left to build and advance the case myself. Based on my experience, I would not hire this attorney again.

The whole point of why I was seeking a CA attorney was that I needed someone well versed in CA real estate law, especially Prop 13 law. So for him to say I needed a NH attorney (who would know nothing about CA RE law and Prop 13 law) was exactly the opposite of what I needed, and showed he was not exactly on top of things, either then or later in his response to the review. As for "I do not handle that type of law" in the review response, their web site lists "REAL ESTATE" as one of the areas of expertise for Attorney Michael K. Wolder. So I think there's more "confusion" here, too, either in the initial query response or the review response.
