Great restaurant! Small, but didn't feel crowded, nice atmosphere. Had the gnocchi which was the best I've had anywhere, as it is very easy to overcooked. It was prepared perfectly in a tomato based sauce with sausage. Would definitely order again. Although I didn't get a great look at the wine list it appeared to be mostly Italian reds, which makes sense, but I do like to see restaurants include some Oregon pinots. I have been to Lucca twice and loved it. I work for a wood fired pizza place, but I love coming here. They have a great margarita pizza and they offer additions like pancetta. We got this a few times and it was a great pizza. We ordered it for dinner tonight and picked it up. When we arrived home, there was no pancetta. I thought it was a mix up so we call the Resturant, the girl on the phone then puts me on hold immediately after I told her what happened. She comes back a few minutes later and says "they don't do that anymore, I just didn't tell you". They didn't even try to fix it, or maybe get something else we would of liked. Instead we are our plain $13 cheese pizza for dinner. The girl was very rude and seemed to be in a hurry to get me to shut up. Will not get pizza here anymore. read more

My boyfriend and I ate at Lucca to celebrate our 12-year anniversary on Friday evening. Upon arrival, we were greeted by an entirely unpleasant hostess. Seriously, she needs to find another job. She never smiled (mostly she scowled). She never made eye contact. She rushed to our table and dumped the menus while I was still near the door hanging my coat, scarf and umbrella, leaving my boyfriend and me to wander back to our table by ourselves. She didn't bother to check if our table was satisfactory, which it wasn't. Because our reservation was early (5:00 pm), the restaurant was still mostly empty, but rather than seating us in the warm, convivial section of the restaurant at the front , she sat us in the back room in a dark, cold corner when there were lots of tables available elsewhere. We asked to be moved, and again, she didn't bother to accompany us to our new table. Fortunately, the rest of our dinner experience at Lucca was top notch. I ordered the beet salad as an appetizer. Our server (Derek?) suggested cod fritters as an appetizer even though they weren't on the menu. Great suggestion! The fritters were crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, not at all greasy, and came atop a perfect aoli (I think it had red peppers in it). The beet salad was light, delicate and super fresh with a sprinkling of pomegranate seeds. Yum! Our entrees were well prepared. I had the Maccheroni ai Funghi and my beau had the Tagliatelle Bolognese. Both pastas were well prepared and tasty. Dessert was a scrumptious poached pear served over a pastry bed with chocolate and caramel sauce (like the fritters, it's not always on the menu hence suggested by our server). After we got past the surly hostess, the rest of our service was quite good. Derek was warm, friendly, helpful, and gave us just the right amount of attention. Even the busser was extra nice. The price was very moderate, too. I'd have given Lucca four stars were it not for the hostess. I hope that management sees this and gets rid of her. Lucca is far too nice a restaurant for her to be greeting your customers. read more

Lucca is always a great standby neighborhood restaurant for us and I'm really surprised to see any negative reviews. Tonight we walked in at 8:30 without a reservation to a busy restaurant and they made room for us with the most friendly and welcoming service from the hostess to all of the waitstaff. The food (pizza, kale caesar salad and broccolini side) and drinks were all wonderful. Deliscioso Food was tasty. Menu changes weekly according to the friends who introduced us to Lucca, and is seasonal. Yummmm. Friendly environment and a great "local" eatery. While this is a fantastic neighborhood restaurant, we gladly make the 40 minute drive for the people, ambiance and the menu at Lucca because it is well worth the effort. If you are at all inquisitive, Lucca is a jewel that needs to be explored. If you take even a fleeting interest in the ingredients that comprise a truly unique dining experience you will really enjoy the care that the staff and management take in putting together their menu. I love talking with the knowledgeable wait staff and finding out that the pancetta they use is locally farmed exclusively on a diet of hazelnuts, or that the unripened bocconcini is cultured from buffalo milk or that the featured wine was produced in less than 500 case lots from a tiny portion of Northern Italy. The magic is there for those who seek to find it. read more

Lucca is one of our favorite local restaurants and we're regulars. They do a great job on their drinks....they know how to make a good negroni, which I appreciate. I love their pizza and my husband is smitten with their tagliatelle. The only downsides to the place are the noise level on busy nights and the plethora of children. After a frustrating day, we dropped in for a happy hour. For Mrs. Creosote and I, two salads of mixed greens and a minimalist Caesar with anchovy and lemon rather than a creamy nightmare. House cured olives. And the usual funghi pizza. Apparently, the Italian cousin of this pizza inspired the owners to install their pizza oven. Yes, it's that good. Two good pours of the house red and white. We left feeling well again. Service was Portland-indifferent. But the food made up for it. Especially for happy hour. I'll make this one quick. We each ordered a salad, but only one came. The waiter was very good about getting mine after we reminded him and he said it would be on the house. Very nice of him. I got the sausage pizza, my dining partner the steak. The pizza was good, but the steak was only room temp and came with salad on the side. It was sort of like a stead salad rather than a steak dinner, but it cost $23 just for the steak plate. Yikes! The total bill, with just a couple of iced teas to drink was just over $50 with tip. That was pretty high for what we got. And no one would refill out iced teas so we had to stop our waiter and ask. So, I'd give 3 stars for my sausage pizza, and my dining partner's special shrimp and cucumber salad, the rest of the meal and experience only rate 3 starts. If I could I'd probably do 2.5 stars I guess. read more

Lucca has a great menu which updates daily to reflect availability of their local ingredients, but full wine menu (at great prices) that never changes. A friend recommended Lucca as a good place to get pizza. I'm so glad we went. My husband hates Oregon pizza and he finally found a place he likes. He had the arrabiatta pizza with added fennel sausage (at the recommendation of our very friendly waiter). I had the pasta with duck (at the recommendation of another reviewer) and it was yummy. The place is definitely kid-friendly. We went after 7 hoping to avoid the families, but it was still packed with kids. That said, it was not too loud and the hostess told us she could seat us, but there was a child nearby having a temper tantrum, so if we wanted to wait a few minutes, we could expect something to open in a more kid-free area. That was very much appreciated. By the time we left, the place was almost kid-free. If you want to avoid family time, I'd come after 7:30. We'll definitely be back - and will certainly take friends and visitors with children here! read more

Friendly, neighborhood restaurant. Great food, excellent (and good looking) service. Their entire menu is exceptional and features fresh local ingredients. Salads, apps, pizza, entrees are all tasty. We've gone for brunch, lunch, happy hour, and dinner (not all on one day...ok there was one time when we went for lunch and dinner) and each meal has been delightful and not too hard on the pocketbook. I recommend anything that's a special, their chef has some masterful creations. Try out one of the cocktails on the menu, or if you're into wine, ask for a suggestion, the wait staff or bar keep rarely steer you astray. Funghi pizza, caesar salad, chicken cooked under a brick would be my recommendations. Their soups are great and their lunch special of pasta and salad is a perfect mid-day meal. Oh and the polenta, egg thing for brunch is legit. For happy hour, they have a great selection of antipasti plates. This place is the best, but don't tell too many people, it's hard enough to get a table on the weekends as it is. read more
