When there were no Hakka restaurants in GTA, this was amongst the very few that we visited almost three decades ago. While in the area we decided to stop by with family to see how it now stands up to 100s new Hakka restaurants. The owners have changed for sure since then. The inside is still the same as I remember with new table and chairs. Still clean and tidy. The service is still good. The owner/manager gives to personal service and answered all of our ingredient questions. Our taste buds have evolved and the competitors are feeding us dishes that are more amplified than the ones we got here. Our favourite Manchurian Pakorra in gravy was OK. Not bad, but the pakoras were to big and just doughy. The gravy again OK. The Tofu Chilli not hugely spicy and felt under seasoned to us. The Fried Rice was again very plain. Noodles were OK and the same goes for Szechuan Mixed Veggies. Felt as if we are eating at a traditional Chinese restaurant rather than Indian style Hakka restaurant. read more

Oh my goodness. Who knew I needed this in my life? Well, I did. Look, I began thinking that maybe I had no idea what chow mein was. I have bisoted several establishments in Phoenix and always seem to get lo mein noodles when I order chow mein. We wandered in a bit later in the evening and placed an order. I was so happy to see so many veggie options to choose from. I decided upon the Manchurian Vegetable Chow Mein and I am so glad I did. No joke, I munched on it for 3 days. The vinegar & chilli was used on day 3 and I wish I wasn't so terrified of it on da 1 because man, did it amp it up! I also had a veggie spring roll which was good, but nothing to write here about. Ma went back 2 more times after our visit and thoroughly enjoyed her dishes. Will I be back? When I am back in town and so long as they're open and around, absolutely I will be back. This place primarily does Indian Chinese food but they have some Chinese dishes too. They use halal meat but also serve alcohol. Had crispy beef kam bien, a dish I haven't seen before. It was pretty tasty: crispy beef strips in spicy soy sauce with bean sprouts, green peppers & shredded carrots. It was slightly crispy & had a nice umami flavour. This place is great! Atmosphere is chill and the staff and owners are also extremely friendly. They were great at offering recommendations for new customers and you can tell making the customers happy is their main priority. The owner took the time to offer suggestions as I just couldn't decide on what dishes to order, and explained what's in each dish so I knew what my options were. Menu is extensive (which is great because I like variety and options based on what I'm craving), food is really good, full of flavour and just the right amount of spice, especially the chili chicken! Can't wait to return (especially for dine-in) and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for somewhere to enjoy some quality Hakka food. Update: Have been a Lucky's regular for years, quality of food has completely taken a nose dive. Every dish is greasy beyond words. A container of fried rice shouldn't be covered in grease at the bottom when I'm done. Dry chili chicken (without gravy) should be crispy texture, instead it's greasy and soggy from the excessive amount of oil. The food here is as greasy as when my less than stable ex used to cook for me... Mandatory gratuity charge for dining in was also put in place here prior to covid, which always bothered me. Tips are optional in my opinion, when you enforce it to be compulsory, it becomes a surcharge. Servers are a hit or miss, either polite or incredibly rude. Doesn't look like a good environment to go work, much less eat from. This place has gone downhill big time! read more

All Hakka is definitely not equal. I find most places oily spicy but without much flavour. I am so lucky this spots around the corner. May be the most flavourful Hakka I've ever had. My go to is their garlic fish when I want a touch of sweet and their dry chilli fish when I want all spicy savoury goodness---- sooo yummy! It's definitely not the healthiest food but these are not wasted calories. And really it's a good deal too. The noodle orders are insane. First time here, and I was amazed at how yummy the food was. The interior looks like your everyday hakka place, so I was quick to judge. The portion sizes are large. I would say though they give a lot of vegetables with the protein dishes. Our table ordered some meat and tofu dishes and I would say about 70% was vegetables. There's a lot of non-unique vegetarian options. It ranges from different types of tofu to different curries. They have a whole section for veggies on the menu. Service wasn't terrible, wasn't the best the best either. You have to go up to them and ask for things such as if you need another glass of water. I would highly recommend the chilli chicken here. My friend who comes often says it's her go to. This is a great place for big groups to mix and mingle with different dishes. read more

Lucky Chinese is one of those restaurants you silently judge as an ethnically Chinese person. The clientele is diverse and the deco is modern with a Chinese edge. My partner and I ordered the honey garlic chicken and beef curry which were both delicious. The curry was a little oily but easy to remove. The flavours were impactful, with flavours that mirror Chinese American cuisine, but with more of an Asian edge. Rice is included in this order as well. The portions are massive, and is an a great place to get a little grub and take some home for later. Definitely recommend for a Sunday night when you have lunches to pack for the rest of the week. read more

Fried rice was standard, nothing that would make me go there versus other hakka places, other than the extreme portion size. Manchurian eggplant was better than I had at most places, actual large chunks of eggplant versus smaller strips of eggplant I've had at my usual hakka spot, Lin Garden. Ok so Hakka restaurants already give large portions generally speaking, however, these guys give huge portions even by hakka standards! 2 people can 1 serving of Fried rice 2 times!! Their food and service is not bad either. We got Lucky Chilly chicken and Ginger Beef and both were very good, we asked them to make it spicy so they made it pretty good with chill oil and and green chillies. This has now replaced tangerine as my favourite spot for hakka. read more

My kids didn't enjoy much, they don't like the spicy food, the hot and sour soup is Hot/spicy, but yummy. a family of 6 kids and 6 adults, when kids didn't eat much so we had quite a bit of leftover cost around $120 + tip. which is okay. Portions were a little on small, but we didn't mind. a dinner order of Schezuane (sorry about spelling) chicken or beef, is good for two people. Lucky Chinese Restaurant is located in a strip plaza at Lawrence and Scarborough Gulf Club Road. Most people would mistakenly call it Hakka food, but I would call it Chinese food made for Indian taste buds. The misclassification stems from the known fact that the local Chinese population residing in India are predominantly Hakka Chinese. While the root of most Chinese-Indian cuisine is indeed Hakka Chinese food, it is still erroneous to classify it as such. Although the décor is authentically Chinese, you can tell just by looking up at the tv who their clientele is with Bollywood music videos beaming off the screen.The food here is spicy, but at least there's flavour. The Chili Chicken was not just a plate of breaded chicken that was drenched in a salty soy sauce unlike some other establishments I've frequented. If you can't handle your spicy, luckily they provide you with an entire pitcher of cold water upon seating. Hot tea is available as well, but that just worsens the burning effect on your taste buds. The Chili Chicken, albeit spicy, was quite flavourful. The chilis in this dish really pack in the heat, luckily, it is served with a bowl of rice to counteract some of the fiery sauce. I also ordered Chicken Pakoras, which are fried fritters that are made with varied ingredients depending on the region. These ingredients can range from onions, to eggplant, to potato. The ones at Lucky's were served with lime wedges. The fritters were not too oily. The outside was nice and crispy while the inside was tender. I believe ours was of the Aloo Pakora variety, which is made with potato as the inside had the fluffy texture of a mashed potato. Most fritters (think chicken balls) are quite bland and flavourless and must rely on the saving graces of a sauce, but these were great with just a squirt of lime juice. Verdict: Prices here are a little more than what most Chinese restaurants charge (usually around the $5-$6 range). Our bill rang in at about $25 with tax and tip. The portion sizes are sufficient, and we had some pakoras left over that we just couldn't finish. The staff here are quick to respond and the food comes out pretty fast as well. I can't quite decide which dish I liked better as both were good. But I think if I had to choose one, it would've been the pakoras as it allowed me to enjoy my meal without needed an extinguisher to douse the inferno that was building in my mouth. I know - I am a big wuss when it comes to spicy food but I'm building up my tolerance! I am no expert when it comes to Chinese-Indian food, but the food at Lucky's is pretty yummy! read more

I've been going to Luckies for about 15 years now and I must say its one of my top 3 picks for Hakka food. They have two locations both alongside Lawrence Ave. East (Golf Road & Midland Rd.). However, I would recommend trying the location on Midland as I have had better luck with them in the past few months. Food- Luckies tends to be one of the more spicier Hakka restaurants that I have been to in comparison to other Hakka restaurants. The food is tasteful and the portions are HUGE. My favourite dishes are the Chilli Chicken, Manuchurian Chicken and the Schezuen Shrimp. Each dish comes with a bowl of steam rice as well. However, if you order additional Fried Rice be warned that it's a LOT. 1 Fried rice is a little less than $8 but will fill up 3 people easy. Definitely recommend any of the Manchurian fried rice dishes over the regular fried rice. Service-Average service. To be honest I wouldn't expect anything more from a Hakka Restaurant. The food is generally ready within about 10 mins. Also, if you pay by cash they reduce the bill by about 15% (I think this is only for take out items though). read more

Best Hakka in Scarborough bar none. Lucky's is in a league of their own when it comes to both the taste and value of their menu items.

Recommended to us by a friend, this place serves enormous portions, so you can ignore the rather scanty list of appetizers. The food is more Chinese-ey and less Indian than Kim Kim which is another "Hakka" favourite. We ordered Hakka Chow Mein, Singapore Noodles and Crispy Beef, all of which were great, espieally the last (but watch out for the little green chilis which are diabolically hot and can easily become camouflaged in the sauce). As an FYI, this place, like most "Hakka" Indo-Chinese places, is Halal and serves no pork. No decor to speak of. Service was brupt but friendly. Prices are extremely reasonable, especially given the portion size and use of Halal meat. read more

I was introduced to this place by a coworker, who brought me in for lunch. Love the ambiance; Bollywood videos playing on the TVs, very clean. The food was great. We had chili chicken, Manchurian beef noodles, and spring rolls. The chili chicken was amazing. As hot as it could be and still be edible. I had sweat dripping down my nose! The beef noodle dish was quite good as well. The spring rolls were OK, nothing unusual. They did come with a great pickled salad, which was delicious. In India and other India related countries a specific type of chinese food exists. often immigrants from te Haka region migrate to these places and open up their on restaurants. These restaurants cater to the local spices and tastes and tend to be different and more spicier than the average chinese meal. these meals are often erroneously referred to as Hakka Chinese. The dishes like "curry chow mein" aren't actually typical Hakka dishes, just the people who are owning the restaurant are from the area. Luck Chinese specializes in not actual hakka chinese food, but the Indianezed version of chinese food. It's sort of like Americanized Chinese food, just Indianized instead. In this restaurant it is very obvious who the target clientele is, Indian music videos play in the background, and most of the customers I usually see are also Indians. Ambiance - Nothing really super special, nice enough decor, has a bar, appears to be clean. Service - The service here is usually pretty good. They are nice enough, and they are willing to help people who don't know much Food- I LOVED their pickled carrot dish! It's delicious. Also I like the noodle dishes that they have. they let you chose your spiciness and it is usually accurate. I hate it when I order a 3/5 and get bland stuff. Other than that I like most of the dishes I have had here, I have been going for years, and it is one of my favorite places to go. There is a way of sort of ethnic dining in Toronto, where you get to really try good food from different cultures. I would recommend this place for a dip in. A way you can tell if an ethnic local Toronto place has good food, is who actually goes to eat there. I.e. You go to a Chinese restaurant, you want to see people from that Culture eating there. This restaurant does a heavy load of business, both dine-in and take-away. We've been here many times and have noticed a progressive decline in the quality of food. The vegetables and many, many chilli peppers they use are very poorly cut. Pieces of onion, green pepper and chilli peppers are ridiculously huge. The Manchurian beef fried rice is pretty good, as is the flavour of the chilli chicken and schezuan beef. However, there seems to be a justified common complaint relating to how much gravy one is allotted in an order of chilli chicken, to the extent that each of the cash registers has a sign taped on the front stating that if unsatisfied with the amount of gravy provided, extra will cost $2.00 more. Portions in the beef dishes are very, very small. The Singapore rice noodles are really good and noodle dishes in general have huge portions, but the Cantonese veggie chow mein dish is a shockingly small portion of noodles. The grease in the fryer needs to be changed way more often. The next time we were there after ordering take-away, we mentioned a really odd, heavy, not good taste in the beef and without a split-second's hesitation, the response was that the grease in the fryer needed to be changed. They never changed it apparently because it tasted even worse a few weeks later. We don't order the dish any longer. Over a period of time we've had chicken pakora with heavy over-seasoning and noodles with an actual giant clot of cumin that spoiled the dish. On another occasion we had split open, burned spring rolls that were inedible and had to be tossed in the trash. Now that I'm writing this, I don't see myself returning. The food quality declines with each visit. I was never very comfortable with the constant sight of someone cutting chilli peppers at one of the tables in the main dining space. I never drive through the area without stopping at Lucky's for some shrimp pakoras and chilli chicken. The place is the epitome of consistency. The warm tantalizing pakoras are always perfectly fried with the right proportions of dough, shrimp and green chilli peppers. The staff are courteous and on the ball.
