Our pup has been going to Lucky Pawz - North Liberty since he was 12 weeks old and has been attending weekly for almost 4 years. We typically use daycare, but have used boarding before. He's so loved and well-cared for. I have been impressed at how detailed of an eye the handlers keep on the dogs, and the manager's ability to provide updates. You get pictures of your dog at the end of their day, which always makes me so happy! He's always such a tired and happy dog by the end. I wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

BEWARE!!! These guys will leave your dog in a kennel for 7 hours without any potty breaks or supervision!! We boarded here over the weekend and we had car trouble coming to pick up during their morning hours. Called multiple times to tell them we're running late and no one answered the phone. Came to find them closed with absolutely no one supervising the dogs. If I was going to leave my dog alone in a crate all day I could have kept him at home. This is ridiculous and unacceptable that no one informed us of any of this. But why would they? If people knew what they were doing here why would they board their dogs with them? They have a useless emergency number. Called maybe 100 times and no one answered the phone. I feel horrible that I trusted them with my baby. My dog is traumatized. Was shaking in my lap the entire way home after I was finally able to pick him up. If you love your pets don't board them here. If there is a medical emergency or if the heat or air conditioning malfunctions, no one would know because your dog will be alone for hours unsupervised. read more

Both of my dogs went to the Iowa City location for a day (first day for one). Both report cards had pictures of dogs that weren't mine! and they were a day late. I switched to the North Liberty location and this wasn't the case. Based on their photos the facility looks cleaner, also. read more

When we moved here, this is the first dog boarding business I tried and I was surprised to find out that they don't give new/potential customers a tour of the facility. I try not to be overly obsessive about spoiling my pup but when I'm out of town, I can definitely rest easier if I get to see where he'll be staying and who'll be caring for him. Upon picking him up, I didn't receive any kind of report on how he did. He's a picky eater so when I asked if he ate his food, they said, "well his food bag is empty so he must have!" The last thing I was disappointed in is that they don't have any outdoor grassy patches in the play area for the dogs to use. Everything is either cement or gravel (as far as I can tell from the pictures anyway, since I've never been past the front office) and since my dog is trained to only do his business on grass, I'm sure he was afraid of getting scolded every time he went. I think this could be a great place for the more rambunctious and outgoing dogs, but for my shy boy it just wasn't the right fit. read more

We had a very bad experience at this Doggie daycare. My dog kept coming home injured, but all we kept hearing was what a good girl she was. Then the next time we come in, we get told there was a problem, it was her fault, and it's been a problem for weeks. Then, and to make matters worse, one of the owner's dogs jumped out of their vehicle and came tearing across the parking lot at full speed (at least 40 feet) and jumped and snapped at my wife. The dogs run the facility here, and not the humans. My alpha female will step in to be in charge if you won't be, so it's no wonder there were issues when the owners are apparently not dog people. I would not recommend them at all. Go to Just Dog's Playcare in Coralville. Carol there knows how to work with dogs and my 3 dogs have thrived there. read more

Ive been taking my dog for a month now and he loves it! The staff is great and will know your dog after the first screening. They are flexible and coming from the DC area there pricing is more than fair. Hours are 6:30 to 6:30 with good saturday hours as well. My puppy had been to Lucky Paws four or five times without any issues. Always receiving great reports stating that he was a great dog and he could play in any group. Upon picking him up our last visit there the staff had written an "incident report" saying that my dog "was aggressive toward the staff". Describing the incident stating that when the staff tried to grab his collar to put him in another room to sleep or eat he would lie on the ground. I am not sure why this was interpreted as aggressive. None the less they mentioned that they would not allow him back until he and I had gone to see a specific trainer, which they recommended, one on one. Keep in mind he has already been through two obedience trainings and has never had an incident at the dog park, with a person, child, etc. Upon visiting the trainer Lucky Paws recommended, I was informed that laying down when a person reaches for the dogs collar is not to be interpreted as aggression. From what I have been told, this means the dog has anxiety about being grabbed by the collar. As I had mentioned, the first few times my dog went here we had no issues and he came back exhausted. That being said our last visit was very off putting and I will not be taking my dog back. read more

Visiting from NYC and needed our furry family member to be boarded briefly. We were worried about every aspect of finding a kennel, and landed on Lucky Pawz. Best. Decision. Ever. Every human there is amazing, kind and generous with their time. They clearly love dogs and take excellent care of them. Our pup had a great time making new friends and playing all day; the daily report card photos helped us feel good right when we were missing him most. The majority of the staff do seem to care about the dogs, but are provided with little to no dog handling training, let alone basic canine first aid. A very high employee turnover rate also seems to compromise care (as well as reflect poorly on management). Communication between employees and with management (and ultimately with the customer) is fragmented. Problems often go unreported or are misreported entirely. Employees also aren't kept up to date on new dogs and if the dog doesn't have a tag, many employees won't even know his/her name. Overall, I've found the majority of employees to be pleasant and caring, but poor management seems to make it hard for them to do a good job. I would -not- recommend taking your dog to Lucky Pawz. read more

Many people believe in the caring nature of Lucky Pawz as it does seem that way from the facade (what they will allow customers to see). Unfortunately, this is not the case. With little to no consideration for dogs as individual beings in need of appropriate and time consuming care on a daily basis. It seems the management expresses little interest in the safety and health of both the dogs and the hard working employees. Sadly, profit seems to be of most importance. It would seem logical to: 1. provide customers with a complete picture/knowledge on the practices that involve their dogs 2. provide adequate blankets and employees time to successfully and carefully clean and prepare for ALL dogs' needs before closing (especially now with closing even earlier on weekdays) 3. have dangerous maintenance issues be taken care of immediately rather than waiting for dogs or employees to get hurt Please make sure that you research alternative places to bring your dog. read more

My dog has been going to Lucky Pawz for about four months now. He loves it! He gets really excited he realizes where he's going and when I pick him up he is exhausted. He sleeps and snores all the way home. It has been a lifesaver on Mondays when no one is home with him and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone (and clearly they keep the trouble making dogs out). We use this daycare while in town. We don't have as strict dog daycare rules where we're from but they were helpful and able to get our pup in for the three days that we were in town. He loved it and made a new friend. I loved the daily reports because we don't get those at our home daycare. All of the staff was super nice and helpful. We were under the impression that we would always be informed of any issues or illnesses that took place at the facility, however, this has not been the case. Our puppy has been attending doggie daycare for a few weeks and came home sick with kennel cough. Upon informing the Iowa City facility of her illness, we were told that another dog had been there with a suspected case of kennel cough. We can't understand why we were never told this when the other dog became sick. Instead, we are stick watching our poor puppy suffer. Communication is definitely lacking at this facility and we had to learn that the hard way. read more

My sister-in-law resides in Iowa City and advised me against using Lucky Pawz due to several bad experiences she has had with them. However, the staff was friendly and one of the few in the area able to accomodate my last-minute situation by allowing my dog to be boarded overnight despite not having been there for a half-day daycare evaluation (which they require in most cases). So, I decided to give them a try. I made ONE request in regards to feeding/care, and it was blatantly not honored. Because we were traveling, my dog didn't get a chance to eat the morning I dropped him off (he is usually fed in the morning when I get up). I provided two days worth of food in a plastic bag and requested that he be fed half the bag right then after dropping him off, and also included written instructions on the intake form to feed half a bag during the morning feeding time the following day. This would imply that the bag would be empty upon my return. When I picked him up 36 hours later, almost the entire bag of food was intact. I asked if he'd been fed, and the girls didn't seem to know why there was still so much food in the bag, but insisted he had been fed his own food, both times, as requested. When we left, I filled his bowl with food and put it in the backseat of my car; unsurprisingly, he wolfed it down as if he'd not eaten for several days (he is usually a nibbler and doesn't eat all his food in one sitting). I also didn't get much feedback when I asked how he did (I don't think either of the girls working really had a clue when I picked him up) because this was his first time being boarded overnight and he tends to be shy and nervous in new situations. Two stars because they were friendly and willing to accomodate me; however, I was very disappointed by the (lack of) care and attention from the staff, and won't be returning or recommending. read more

Overall, I recommend Lucky Pawz. We used Lucky Pawz for five day visits. We would likely use again if needed. We found Lucky Pawz through Google when trying to find a doggy day care service for my, Cavachon, puppy. We were in need of the service because we were in town for a week due to my father being a patient at the University Hospital. While the facility isn't as nice / clean as the doggy day care facility we use at home, Lucky Pawz served the need that we had. I was a little concerned because in the photos posted to their blog, it looks like my dog was covered in water (or some liquid), yet I wasn't told of her misbehaving. My dog has a Whistle, so I'm able to track her activity. Her activity at Lucky Pawz was much like it is at her regular facility. Each morning she was excited when we arrived, so that is always a good sign. The majority of the staff was very friendly and seemed genuinely happy to be there. read more

Took my 2 labs (6 months and 12 months old) to the North Liberty location last weekend. Our normal dog watchers were on vacation, and we had a family emergency. Came back to pick up the pups, and the puppy had poop caked in the hair on the back of her legs - and when we asked about this, we were told that they pooped on the bed, but it was 'intact' and was not on her legs - and that was from playing with other dogs (not the case, it was dry and caked in the leg hair and under her tail). We got the dogs home (and showered off), and they were very lethargic - which we first thought was due to them being tired out from playing. Then the diarrhea and vomiting started, and has been going for the past 2 days. What clearly happened was that the dogs got sick there, and were left to lie in the mess. If they pooped on the bed, that was because there was no other space in the cage, and it was an emergency. I will never take my dogs here again - both my dogs got super sick, and they were not honest about it. Or worse, they were neglected and the staff never noticed.... There are much better places in the greater Iowa City area. read more
