Popped in one recent evening just because we were downtown and hungry. Service was outstanding. The food reminded me of the rare roadside stop in France that throws down incredible comfort food. A glass of pinot with the beet and goat cheese salad was a terrific start, followed by a rabbit stew that rivaled anything I've eaten in Bourgogne. Almost made me cry. The mussels were equally fabulous, even the remains I finished the next day. I didn't see they had Ricard until we were leaving. Next time I'll sit at the bar with a Ricard or two and eat mussels until they have to carry me out. This review has been long coming! I Seriously have no clue why people rave about this restaurant, NO clue! I have been to Lucky twice thinking the first time may just have been a mishap unfortunately that was not the case. The decor is the only palatable item in this restaurant. I dig the modern NYC vibe but this doesn't make up for the cuisine which is seriously lacking in culinary know how. I don't even know where to begin. I heart cheese platters but only order if you are into nibbles small enough for an ant to carry away from a picnic. When I inquired about getting bigger chunks of cheese during our second visit, I was told they couldn't do this because the cheese was expensive. Um, last time I checked manchego doesn't cost much. I could pick apart every menu item ordered but I will not... I will just give you one more example. The risotto or should I say Rice-A-Roni was a joke. I am shocked they event attempt to pass that off as risotto. It was not made with arborio rice, was complete mush and was not seasoned properly if at all. There are few items I judge a Chef's ability to cook by and risotto is one. Don't waste your time or money. If you are looking for tasty cuisine hit up Blue Apron in Salem. I have heard about Lucky since before we moved back to Roanoke, so when the opportunity presented itself, my husband and I came here with another couple for cocktails and a variety of small plates. None of us were impressed and I'm pretty baffled by the positive Yelp reviews of this place. The service was very slow and lackluster despite a half-full restaurant, the Prosecco was served in a white wine glass and our server didn't understand why this was unacceptable, and the food was OK but completely unmemorable. The only positive thing about our visit was the handcrafted cocktails, of which I think we sampled five or six different ones, but overall this place was no bueno and none of us plan on returning. read more

I took a large work party here for dinner a few weeks ago and it was a huge success. The food was amazing, and the service was wonderful. I will concede that the charcuterie and cheese platter was very small portions, which didn't go over well with our large group. I have never seen marrow bones on a menu, so of course that had to be ordered. Our group ordered most of the dishes - the fried chicken, the duck, the chicken pot pie and the vegetarian dish. Everyone was fairly happy with their meal. We had a lovely time and will probably be back. read more

We had a wonderful take-out dinner from Lucky during a brief stay in nearby Salem. We phoned ahead and Hunter emailed us the evening's menu. We ordered several items, plus dessert. When I arrived at Lucky, I parked across the street in the empty commercial parking lot there and walked right in. In the space of about 15 minutes they had prepared our entire order. The lovely staff rung me up very quickly and I was on my way. The fried chicken was delicious and still pretty crispy even after the 20-minute journey in the food container. The marrow bones were excellent, although I think I would have preferred the same bread toasted. The boiled peanuts were really nice, as were the slightly soggy french fries (not the best choice for the journey). The bread pudding was buttery and completely decadent. The chocolate pot de crème was so rich, we only could eat half of it. It was a great meal, by all accounts. We'd love to visit again and perhaps dine in. It's just difficult to do that when we are travelling with our dog, who wasn't feeling well. this place is absolutely intense. the combination of "lucky" and "wildflour" has caused me to change my point of view about dining in roanoke, va. it seems that roanoke has come of age. this is my second visit to lucky and i have to admit (again) that i like everything about it. the funky vibe, the people who hang out here, the wait-staff and above all those, the food. a trip to lucky is an evening drenched in elegance, a dark intimate mystery, a location in a part of town that makes you feel like your doing something naughty and an erotic satisfaction that comes from enjoying some of the best food roanoke has to offer. on this last visit we sat in their outdoor area called the "lanai" to have drinks before dinner. as i live in hawaii this made me giggle. "lanai" is the hawaiian word for "porch". i traveled 5,000 miles and still get to sit on someone's "lanai" in another part of the world. how cool is that? it is rare that a restaurant is good enough that i want to write them a letter and tell them about themselves.....but "lucky" has a letter coming from across the ocean. i couldn't imagine going to roanoke and not dining here. my aloha goes out to you guys - you are roanoke's shining jewel through-and-through. read more

What an unexpected gem- was road tripping through and stopped here for dinner. Had an average experience here. It was busy on a Monday night so we got seated in a tiny table next to the entrance. They had some unique menu options (such as marrow). The food tasted decent but not mind blowing. We tried 2 mixed drinks, also just so so, nothing to write home about. Was a tab bit disappointed given how good the ratings here are. The ambiance was great but the food was either tasteless or tasted bad. My travel partner ordered the fried chicken; it wasn't anything special but the mashed potatoes it came with did not taste like potatoes and the--what I assume was a green, leafy thing--put a terrible taste my mouth. I had the goat cheese and beet salad. I think the beets were pickled but I don't remember reading that on the menu. There was supposed to be a cranberry dressing on the salad but the dressing was tasteless/nonexistent (it was just like having plain oil but you're paying a cranberry vinaigrette price). My husband and I went to Lucky in December for an early dinner and we had a wonderful time. Lucky is the only restaurant in Roanoke Valley which makes us feel like we are transported to a chic metropolitan gastropub even though we are in Roanoke. We moved to Roanoke from Seattle in 2010 and it's so great to find a restaurant like Lucky. Lucky has an unique ambience and nice groovy music. We love the little details (the 1971 jukebox, the lighting, high backed booths, etc.) that went into the design of the place, great drinks and food. Service was very impressive as well on our visit. Where else in Roanoke can you enjoy good southern food (eg. Fried chicken) and French cuisine (eg. Cassoulet) at the same restaurant? Local Roots used to be our favorite restaurant in Roanoke but Lucky is our new favorite. read more

Third visit - seems to be our curse. Another one bites the dust. Ordered the mussels for the 3rd time and they were "A-OK". Nothing compared to our previous visits. They were just a little old we think and had started to get thin & stringy. Not bad enough to send back - we usually do not send things back unless it's inedible. Upscale without being pretentious. I was here for business with my boss and we were both really impressed. I had the goat cheese and beet root salad which was delicious. Just the right amount of dressing and the large was a generous portion. I also had the muscles and they were fantastic too. Got to chat with the owner Hunter, a humble chap who was appreciative of our visit, he also was knowledgable of the local craft beers he serves. I wanted to give this place four stars, but the food was just disappointing for the price. I was in town for business and went here with a large group of folks. The cocktails were excellent, one was a spin on a dark and stormy and the other was call The Aviation and was a great gin drink. For dinner I had a blueberry and bacon salad (the bacon hunks were excellent, the salad itself was adequate) and the rock fish special as my entree. I should have followed my friends' advice that Roanoke is a bit of a long way from the ocean to be ordering sea food. Lesson learned. The rock fish was very fish tasting and the sides were fairly bland. One of my fellow diners' steaks was way overcooked and another was very unimpressed with her pork chop. The restaurant and area were both very neat and unexpected. The service was good and friendly. I would try it again if I was in Roanoke, but certainly didn't quite deliver what I was expecting and hoping. read more

Decided to take the drive from Indian Valley, the middle-of-nowhere town where our B&B was located. Awesome place. Love the feel and the food! Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and fast. My husband ordered the braised pork, which came with a lot of pork and was good. I had the fish special on top of a sweet potato purée with a few layers of other goodies, also very good. We both finished our plates. Regrettably, neither of us ordered drinks; they sounded interesting though, and I wish we had. I ate at Lucky twice during a road trip through Virginia and the Carolinas this past May. On the way down the Blue Ridge Parkway, I stopped in after hearing about it on Yelp, and just sat at the bar by myself and had a fabulous small meal. As I recall, I had some octopus and some other tapas-like dishes. It has a regional flair (Fried Chicken) but it also reflects a small Southern City working hard to have a seriously good small joint- and succeeding! Everything about Lucky is thought out and fun. Sure, the menus inside old vinyl record album covers at the bar was a bit weird (at first I thought it was a kind of quirky gift!), but when I returned a week or so later for a sit down dinner with a date, I got the full restaurant experience (it's always different than sitting at the bar...). And it was excellent. This is when I tried the chicken, and my date had the ribs, I think (?) Anyway, we both loved our meals. The room is a bit crazy loud, but that's better than too silent. Downtown Roanoke is working to revitalize its downtown, and appears to be succeeding. It's a beautiful little place. And Lucky is a great place to spend an evening there. Enjoy! read more

My only complaint would be that the menu is quite limited. I appreciate that restaurants are limiting their menus to ensure the freshest food but a few more entree options would be great. I was excited to find a french restaurant in the area as I was travelling through Roanoke. The atmosphere was nice, but unfortunately thats it. My husband ordered the confit duck leg in pasta. It was over $20 and tasted good however there was literally 8 pieces of small pasta filled confit. I felt bad to try his food because one bite was half of his meal. I ordered the mussels and it tasted as though it was previously frozen- not fresh. With drinks, the bill was over $90 and my poor husband left still hungry. We considered ourselves "Lucky" to get a table reservation here on the evening of Valentine's Day. We were visiting Roanoke for a concert on the heels of a near-record snowfall the day before (a solid 16", deeper in places) and our first-choice for dinner was booked up. I saw the positive reviews for Lucky on Yelp and clicked the link to make a reservation through OpenTable. It went through! Yay! We had a place to eat! Still snow-covered side-streets in downtown Roanoke made getting to Lucky a bit tricky, but we persevered and found a space in the pay lot across the street. Once inside, our party of 4 was greeted warmly and, our reservation confirmed, we were led to a cozy booth across from the bar. The coat rack behind the maitre'd station held our coats nicely, but my fedora would not hang on the knob-like hooks. Our hostess was kind enough to ask the bartenders to keep the hat for me behind the bar - which I greatly appreciated as there was no room in the booth. The decor is kitschy but fun - low-lighting, dark woods, with that "yeah, its an old space but we're making it hip" feel to it. We made our selections from the very unique if-not-lengthy menu (which changes daily). My partner and I, both vegetarians, opted for the Chicken-fried Tofu with Kimchi Kale. Our dinner companions chose the Pork au Vin, and a dinner salad with yellow beets and goat cheese, respectively. Appetizer selections included a number of "small plate" options. The women chose a bread plate that included olive relish, a killer tapenade, and creamy and delicious goat cheese spread. The men opted for a half-dozen spectacular raw oysters each (which our server later informed us were provided by Virginia's famed Rappahannock Oyster Company). The cocktails are an attraction in themselves and not to be missed if you're a fan of crafted libations. I had the Chinese Five Spice Old Fashioned with rye whiskey, orange bitters, Demerara sugar, and five-spice. My partner and male dining companion both had the Bourbon Smash made with Evan Williams Black, lemon, mint, and orange bitters served in an old fashioned glass; and our female companion had the Jasmine Cocktail which combined gin, Cointreau, Campari, and lemon served martini style. The cocktails and appetizers were all voted superior and a major player in the meal overall. Our entrees' arrival was perfectly timed, coming just as we'd finished our appetizers and were savoring the second half of our cocktails. The tofu was perfectly fried - crispy on the outside with excellent texture and taste, and the kale was spicy and delicious. I'd chosen the pomme frites as my side - they were crisp and not greasy, served with what was obviously house made tomato ketchup (the whole table shared the ample serving). My partner had selected the mashed potatoes - also very good and plentiful. The pork shank was declared intensely flavorful and the sauce rich and delicious. And our salad-loving companion threatened to lick her plate when all the lovely greens, yellow beets, goat cheese and walnut and cranberry vinaigrette were gone. If we'd not had concert tickets in-hand for the evening, we all agreed we'd have stayed at Lucky for dessert, a second awesome cocktail, and just to soak in the laid back vibe. In regards to drinks, the cube is a local favorite and something I would recommend. The old fashioned is another popular drink on that patrons seem to like. I particularly enjoy the duck confit. The place is quite large for being downtown comparatively. There isn't much street parking outside but it's within walking distance from parking lots. Our server pointed out new items on the menu, gave us recommendations, and took his time to answer any questions we had. Very impressed. For appetizers, we ordered the corndogs. But these weren't just any corndogs: just as the waiter described, these were "whimsical." More importantly, they were the best corndogs I've ever had. Completely homemade with the most amazing dipping sauce. I don't like oysters, but my boyfriend had a few and loved them. For the meal, I had the fried chicken. It came with mashed potatoes and some sort of kale yumminess. Delicious. My boyfriend had the pork shoulder, and it was just as good. We didn't have dessert, but we had a few cocktails each (trying each other's along the way). The $11 price tag hurt a little, but I think I have to say they were worth it. Each one was delicious. I really enjoyed my experience at Lucky's! The cocktails were out of this world. I highly recommend the Strawberry Cucumber Smash; it was unlike anything I've ever tasted! As for the food, it was also very tasty, but I wasn't as blown away as I was by the drink selections. I had the moules et frites and my husband had the steak. We had the marrow bones as an appetizer. The mussels were very good and there was a ton of food on the plate. My husband enjoyed his steak, but he said he far preferred the steak he gets at The Palisades in Eggleston. The marrow bones were delicious, but they didn't give us any appetizer plates and the bread had holes, so it kept falling onto the table. For dessert, I had the bourbon caramel pecan bread pudding. It was yummy, but had more of a French toast consistency than that of bread pudding. My husband had the raspberry cobbler and seemed quite satisfied. We went to celebrate an anniversary dinner. We were up in Roanoke (from NC) on business and went here based on a locals recommendation and we were blown away. The cocktails were as good as I have had anywhere including NY. The service was great and the food outstanding. I can go on and on, but I'll simply say...just go...you will not be disappointed. Anybody who puts less then 4 stars for this place, has no clue. We enjoyed the fried chicken with gravy mashed potatoes and kale (split this with my date along with the mussels, helluva hearty meal). We didn't like the bourbon bread pudding for dessert so much. We were met at the door and whisked to our seats and the bartender gave us a couple of wine tastes before we decided on one, which is always appreciated. Great small family owned gastropub. Came with coworkers (here for a conference) and popped in around 8pm on a Tuesday. Just a few folks at he bar so we were seated right away. They have a great cocktails menu (including the handsome devil - what a great name!) and had good food too. I ordered the mussels, which was huge and definitely enough to share around the table for appetizers or for a good entire entree for one. Lots of garlic, which I loved, the bread was crunchy and buttery, and they even offered refills on the bread, which I didn't accept since I was already stuffed.
