In town for work and staying at the Fire Station One boutique hotel. Stock is located on the first floor so of course I had to try them. WOW! This place is a win for flavor and atmosphere. Kaitlin was the bartender and she also waited on me. She was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The bird-watcher drink she made me was SO delicious. I had the Kapsalon appetizer as my meal. It's kind of like a chicken shawarma salad over hand cut fries with a creamy herb dressing. Seating was flexible, I had the choice of outside back patio, inside at a table, or inside on a couch in the studio. I picked the couch and felt comfortable like at home. The whole place is very cool. I plan on staying here again for future work trips and will definitely try a lunch here sometime this week. read more

So much more than a cafe! If you're feeling fancy, Stock is a fantastic choice for food and drinks of incredible quality at a great price point. Set inside an old firehouse, at the back of a high end furniture store, this place made me feel like I was having a night out in a big city. My husband and I at sat at the bar and ordered pork schnitzel with warm potato salad and hanger steak with frites smothered in gouda cheese sauce. The pork and steak were cooked perfectly! The hanger steak tasted like a much more expensive cut of meat so clearly this is not the chef's first rodeo. And that cheese sauce was ridiculous. My husband enjoyed their $9 happy hour old fashioned and I loved my glass of cab sauv from Fableist. Our server gave us the perfect amount of attention as well. Technically this is the first time I have eaten here. Last time I was in Roanoke I stopped in to see what is like. Ended up having a drink and dessert, also had a chance to talk with the bartender and owner. This restaurant is located in an old firehouse along with an upscale furniture store where you can eat at any one of the dining room tables. This place also has 3 or 4 boutique rooms to rent at a reasonable price. This time I came to have dinner. I the bead and butter to start, homemade bread and delicious butter. Great outdoor patio that is dog friendly! I was not impressed by the first course. We ordered the wedge salad and bread and butter to start. $8 for 4 small slices of bread is a bit steep! The wedge salad was also forgottable. Mains were better. The pork schnitzel was tasting and not greasy. The short ribs were solid - nice sauce and tender. The standout on the menu was the dessert- an ice cream sandwich. They were out of the "featured wine" which felt like a bait and switch, but the picpoul we ordered was fine (if overpriced). My high expectations of this high end restaurant were once again far exceeded, placing it on my Platinum list of very exclusive restaurants that consistently deliver extraordinary dining experiences. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that it would be appropriate this year to go back to this restaurant and write a follow-up review, since my initial review was one of my reviews that contributed to me obtaining this highly esteemed Award. Delighted that this Bistro & Bar is now included in the very exclusive Open Table Reservation System, I made a reservation for last Saturday at 5:30pm, with the request to be seated at the same table 7, next to the window and to the open kitchen, where I had sat last time I had dined there. I arrived half an hour early because I finished what I was doing sooner than what I expected. Yet when I arrived and announced my reservation, the very distinguished yet friendly Host greeted and welcomed me with open arms, escorting me to the exact table that I had requested. There, I had nice window light coming in to be able to better appreciate and enjoy the amazing culinary masterpieces placed on my table; and to photograph them to accompany this review, to give the reader a better appreciation of my words. After all, it is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Here I also had a direct view of the bar and of the open kitchen, being able to view the bartenders creating Works of Art cocktails and the chefs Culinary Masterpieces. Shortly after I was seated, an unassuming yet very knowledgeable and caring person, my server Aaron, arrived with a friendly smile and introduced himself asking me something to the effect of, if I wished to have him as my server for the evening. Talking about people with class. This person had class and style. When I asked him if they had Mocktails, he showed me the list of cocktails and told me anyone of then could be turned into a Mocktail. I picked the Hemingway Daiquiri and was able to see from where I was seated the care and attention to detail as the bartender made my drink and decorated it with a simple yet very elegant detail. And the taste, it tasted like Heaven. To dine, my server graciously took my order. I started with the Virginia Oysters appetizer. You have to see it to believe it. Everything tasted amazing. As my main course I had the Hanger Steak medium rare. It was nice and tender and served with Bacon & Aged Gouda Fondue Topped Fries. Amazingly delicious! For dessert, my server wonderfully recited the name and description of the three they had for the evening. And I chose the one that was my server's top choice and that sounded the best. I can't remember the name, but surely I will never forget the taste. In conclusion this has been once again an extraordinary dining experience in a 5 Star Restaurant that has far exceeded my expectations. Been meaning to stop by for quite a while because my husband loves Nordic type foods. Wish we'd come sooner! There were 5 of us in the party; we sample a huge variety and it was all so good (and I was so hungry) we forgot to take pictures. We tried the bread board, the stock cheese and fish board, the meat balls and smelt as appetizers. I was concerned that the (adult""kids") might not recieve some of the selections but there were no leftovers. Dinner selections included the whole trout, schnitzel, steak and frittes (husband said it was the best steak and perfectly cooked med rare he's had in a long time) and two varieties of the open faced sandwiches. Took home half of the schnitzel so I could order dessert. For dessert I ordered the danish served with chocolate sauce and cherry goat cheese ice cream and my daughter and her bestie ordered the ice cream sandwich. All completely finished. The danish situation was the best dessert Ive eaten in 10 years (I eat a lot of desserts. Thank you Chef Dave!!!!! We also ordered a variety of cocktails, wine and a delicious hard cider. Came here for a quick bite to eat with some friends and was delightfully surprised with how delicious everything was. The small beer was only a dollar during happy hour. Two friends and I shared an order of the fried Gouda (the sauce was a little too spicy for me but still tasty ). I really enjoyed the Kapsalon. The garlic sauce on it went so well with everything. Went there with a group of 6. Food was great, but service was poor. We were there for 2 hours and only had the opportunity to order drinks twice. They made my drink wrong and because I had already waited over 30 minutes for it, I went to the bartender and said, "hey; I asked for this without vermouth." She rudely said, "umm, I just made it how your server rang it in!" I spoke with the manager and he said, "yeah, she gets like that when we're busy. Sorry." So, in short- don't go when they're busy? My husband and I have been to Stock twice- once for a dinner date night and once for dessert/drinks on a whim during restaurant week. I was really surprised to see only 2 reviews on Yelp, but since one is super negative, I guess that's not surprising. We had a great experience both times we dined and had no complaints. This establishment is very beautiful and updated on the interior, including very versatile seating options that meet the needs of almost any potential customer from casual to formal. Unfortunately, this is where the positives both start and end. To begin, the staff was very unwelcoming to say the least . One would think that a proactive warm greeting to incoming customers with reservations made days in advance who are also going to spend a pretty penny would be an absolute given, right? Negative, ghost rider. How about 0 smile, 0 personality, 0 "can do" attitude and 0 desire to provide any customer with an experience of any kind. Then, the delicious steak and fries that they offer was ordered by yours truly and let me tell you, I was excited to say the least to give this dish a try. Wishful thinking for sure as I was informed by my waiter who i saw once every 20 minutes that they were unfortunately oversold on steaks. Alright no big deal right? Inventory isn't endless and while unfortunate, that is not the fault of the waiter. Well then i noticed that a table next to me that ordered far after me was able to acquire not one steak dish, but two. Last time I checked, you can reserve a table in advance but I don't believe that holds true with steak or any cuisine for that matter. You'll be shocked to hear that no solution or sincerity was offered and absolutely no ownership taken. I will never tell anyone where they should or should not go but if I ever did, I'd strongly advise them to not waste a significant amount of money on the McDonald's dollar menu experience that is received at this establishment. read more

Bar and whole restaurant was beautiful and we loved the open kitchen where we could peep at what was going on! The chef even acknowledged us and brought our food to the table. The location is choice, situated inside a boutique hotel (Firehouse One) and locally-crafted furniture store (TXTR), with a stylish dining room, bar and patio. The setting is just FUN. The staff are engaging, professional, knowledgeable, and delightfully authentic & quirky. Jeff Farmer's Scandinavian-style menu is spectacular and very much worth a special visit!!!! I ALWAYS get some VA oysters to start and they NEVER miss. My wife loves the fried gouda sticks to start as well. The bread & butter and the stock board are def crowd pleasers for a large party as well (I don't always share MY oysters...). My entree go-to is the Pork Schnitzel, which you simply can't get anywhere else in the region. SO GOOD, FLAVORFUL AND SATISFYING. My favorite wine is the reliably delicious and sippable Les Heretiques red. The bartenders are also legitimate mixologists who delight & surprise upon request.  Don't forget to add Stock on Facebook and Insta, they have special one-off menus on Mondays which bring even MORE innovative and international items from Northern European cultures. Google "Glizzy" and start from there.... HOWEVER, My REAL reason for posting a review now is that my wife hosted a surprise 50th birthday party for me at TXTR/Stock, with ~100 of my genuinely favorite people in the world. Yes, that is correct. My wife threw me a surprise party with over 8 dozen people in a Roanoke Restaurant. Where else could this have been possible, other than Stock with its built-in showroom?!?! Jeff & his crew worked in secret to provide food & drink for 100 guests over a three-hour period. EVERYONE was blown away by the badass location, the uber-cool vibre, the amazing food, the delectable drinks and the winsome staff. The attention to multiple overlapping customer needs and the shared experience of so many people simultaneously was PERFECTION.  For the rest of my life, Stock will be a second home. I feel I must provide some feedback on my dining experience at Stock Restaurant in early December. I offer this information and my critique in the hopes that the "powers that be" at Stock will make all efforts to address the issues that I describe and attempt to improve their offerings. To start the cocktails were "spot on" and the dessert, the ice cream sandwich was excellent. Now on to the heart of the matter. I thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance and the utilization of the space and seating,though I would recommend that patrons not be required to ask for dinnerware, water and napkins when food is served to them. We had several items from the menu the first being the "Stock Board" which IMHO is well thought out and delicious with variety and quality, however the portion sizes of the "house smoked pickled and cured fish" as well as the cheese items were lacking and when I say "lacking" I really mean nowhere near adequate. A more appropriate menu listing would be; Stock Board Capers, Mustard and Cornichons Scant Samplings of House Smoked Pickled and Cured Fish with Toasted Bagel Slices. We then had the "Kapsalon" which, when done correctly, is delicious. The reality of the dish served to us was, well let's say, not very well received by the four of us. I failed to locate the smoked Gouda and I failed miserably in finding the chicken shawarma within the dish. The french fries were lukewarm and the assembly of the dish was unnerving as it resembled a hedgehog in a bowl. The topping of shredded lettuce, which was eerily reminiscent of Taco Bell shredded lettuce (not my description but that of one of my companions) obscured all ingredients. We also decided to partake in the Schnitzel. I am quite the schnitzel fanatic and I do enjoy a proper schnitzel. Well, I do not know how one could do it but Stock managed to serve a schnitzel that was riddled with gristle? Is pork loin utilized or some other, less adequate cut used? As for the warm potato salad the only proper descriptor/feeling all four of us could muster was sadness. read more
