It was my first time visiting Lulu Island Winery and I thought it was great experience! The staff were knowledgeable about the wines they offer. We stopped in here for a private tour and tasting on our way to Vancouver. We enjoyed the tour- while similar to others the process for ice wine is different so we enjoyed learning about it. The tasting was great- our guide did a great job pairing the bites with the wine. There wasn't a bad wine among them and we loved the ice wine. We did the tour and tasting tour. Our guide was great and provided lots of information on the winery and its history and its connection to the Olympics that were held in Vancouver. They are known for non-grape wines and ice wines but had several traditional wines as well. In the tasting you get a little of everything thang. And they were all good. We had the raspberry wine which was intensely raspberry flavored. The two ice wines were syrupy and full of complex flavors--as a good ice wine should be. Lulu Island is located in Richmond on Westminster Hwy out of no where. Their wines are ok. Price is at the upper end but the quality and taste isn't really at the upper end to justify the price. Don't get me wrong, they are not bad but they are not wow at the same time. I feel like they sell a lot more to the Asia China market than to local. That is the reason for their current pricing. We had booked a tour and tasting online, but when we arrived we were informed that apparently it was just the tasting. The lady serving us our tasting went through each pour quite quickly, almost as if she was trying to get us in-and-out as fast as possible. Although the tasting is very cheap ($10 CAD for five pours, allowing you to try all four of their icewines), the pours are extremely small. The first icewine on the menu (the award winner) is quite good, and the rest of them were just okay. The ground are nice to walk around, and they have a picturesque hedge tunnel. Need to know: Icewines are sweet wines. If you don't like dessert wines / port wines, you will not enjoy anything here. As for their non-icewines, you can find better stuff anywhere in California where we are from. Notable: I usually don't do tours at the average winery/brewery because they all tend to be the same, but this tour is actually worth doing (had done it on my first visit a couple years back), since the process for creating the icewines is a bit different than regular wines. read more

My wine loving friend and I have known about Lulu Island Winery but never visited. This weekend, we finally did a wine tasting and tour. We were pleasantly surprised and it was great to learn more about this local business and how they have grown. Wine Tasting: we had a flight of 5 wines starting with red to white and finished with ice wine. I enjoyed the 2018 Merlot (nice distinct oak, smokey, balanced/smooth so very approachable), 2017 Viognier (easy white with strong tropical notes of pineapple and tangerine-so delicious. $26.95 for the bottle is reasonable) and 2016 Riesling-Chardonnay (classic ice wine with flavours of honey, pineapple & lychee so it was sweet and crisp. No wonder it's award winning and their best seller. Enjoyed the long linger). None of their bottles are sold in BC liquor stores, only at their winery along with other Canadiana products. Tour: grapes for their Muscat are grown in Richmond and grapes for all their other wines are from their land in Oliver & Oosoyoo. Finished with a walk through of their well organized production plant. Came for a quick taste and tour. We didn't have enough time to stick around for the full tour but we got to walk through the retail and tasting area. The wine was surprisingly good, with my preference to the ice wine. I usually never pick the dessert wine since they're too sweet. Lulu island does a really subtlety pleasant ice wine. If you like white wine, run here!! The back drop of this winery is beautiful. Check out their vine tunnel. In the winter, they add lights for the ambiance and in the summer, the add tables for guests to sit and enjoy the weather and wine! The place is huge and offers so much for those looking to host and event. Fun fact: they were used as the private House of China during the Olympics. They have several different rooms (my favourite was the private room with the piano and bar). Lots of personal art and decor around. My understanding is that they do a lot of events here. We got a condensed tour which was very fun! They offer full tours but we were limited with time! Their white wines were stunning! Had a fun time checking out Lulu Island Winery for a #yelpelite event! Prior to this event, it didn't cross my mind that we even had wineries in the Lower Mainland. I always travelled to the Okanagan to get my wine tasting itch satisfied. However, after discovering this winery, I'm going to need to come back to dine under the ivy vine arch . Amazing experience! I went here not expecting anything because my previous wine tasting experience wasn't too good. My bf and I were immediately greeted by Allen who ended up being our tour guide. He was super friendly and knowledgeable...he made the whole tour better by being his fun, sarcastic and lovable self! We learned a lot about the wine making process, including ice wine. It was nice to get a tour of the facility and their different tasting rooms. We tasted 6 different types of wine (whites, reds, and ice wine) and I ended up buying 2 bottles. We also had a plate of charcuterie to ourselves. My bf had a great time because it was his first time doing this and he enjoyed tasting the different types of wine and ended up loving white wine just because of the tour. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone! And if you get Allen as your host, your experience definitely will be elevated! read more

5-star experience in ice wine tasting! Came here with a friend to show her some ice wine since she's never had it. We walked in ~45 minutes before closing. Although we weren't able to hop on a tour, the wine connoisseur was very nice and accommodated us for a tasting. You can taste up to 5 wines here for free, and you are allowed to pick the type of wine you want to try. Aside from the most popular ice wine, they also have traditional red and white wines, fruit wines, as well as both white AND red ice wines! I personally really enjoyed the fruit wines as I've never tried them before. The red ice wine was definitely worth trying as well since they are not as common and the connoisseur told us that the processing for red ice wine is much harder than the normal white ice wine. I learned a lot about ice wine and wine making during our chat with the wine connoisseur, and had a very pleasant experience! read more

Why you ask? 1) not worth the price for tasting (even with the Social Shopper deal) 2) they use grapes from other locations (other properties and other sources) 3) it's not worth the trip to Richmond just for wine tasting We purchased the Social Shopper deal: "$35 for a VIP Private Group Wine Tasting Package for up to 5 People, Including Gourmet Food Pairing, Winery Tour and More at Lulu Island Winery (Value up to $242.25)" Sadly, there wasn't anything special about the "gourmet food pairing," it was just crackers, olives, cheese, and luncheon meat (http://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/0XPY73Re6Mrp5R9oyumTJA?select=GLk8pB3hk_UCI5PeEjAkqw). They even put kiwi on a platter for the ice wine pairing... They almost forgot to give us our souvenir wine carrier bags after our tour and tasting, until we reminded them what the deal included. Aesthetically the landscaping was lacking, the grass clippings were all over the lawn and there weren't any flowers or picturesque spots. I've been on winery tours before (most recently, I've toured Chateau St. Michelle and Columbia wineries in Woodinville, WA. They were located a few miles away from my home in near Seattle), so I was somewhat familiar with the process of making different wines and various grape varieties and the like, but I knew NOTHING about ice wines (I never even heard of ice wine before I moved to Vancouver), so I was curious to learn about this Canadian specialty (!). And when a Groupon became available for this winery, I snatched it up fast. (Note: there are often Groupons for tours here, complete with a charcuterie plater, for two or four people. It is an excellent deal. Even if you are only three people, get the Groupon for four, as I did. The food platter was fantastic! More on that later.....). Our tour guide was Tiffany. Couldn't get a nicer or more knowledgeable guide, that's for sure. I learned SO much during this 90-minute tour, and it really was fun. A few interesting facts and notes about the site and tour: -this is the largest winery in the lower mainland. -they grow some grapes here (Orange Muscat) but get most of their grapes from the Okanagan -there are many tasting rooms here (some cavernous) and one gorgeous VIP tasting room that's more intimate and beautifully decorated -there is an ivied tunnel covered with vines and grapes and lit by white lights after dusk that's a gorgeous venue for a picnic or a photo op -on the tour you'll learn about and see the kegs, the various task-specific machines involved in wine production, the bottling machines and more, and see a very brief video about the making of ice wines (and now I KNOW why they are so expensive. Wow, so very very interesting) -the wine tasting part of the tour is fantastic. From learning all about the different wine types and proper tasting techniques, you'll also get to taste five different wines (tour guide's choice) plus your choice of two extra wines. And the charcuterie plate is wonderful (although it's quite a misnomer, as it didn't have much meats. Our platter for four included assiago and brie cheeses, a variety of crackers, garlic hummus, various olives, honeyed ham, dark chocolate and kiwi slices). It was interested to learn about food pairings with the different wines -Lulu Winery wines have won lots of vintner awards -thier wines are not available in stores; only here at their winery (they are often purchased to be shipped overseas or taken as check-in on flights) -there are tons of tours here and corporate and private events (Note to self: super venue for special events!) -this winery is open every single day of the year, no exceptions -there are lots of wine accessories available for purchase, as well as pricey glasses and gourmet foods This was a terrific tour and a lovely (and impressive!) winery. Everyone in our party had a great time and I personally learned a lot. I highly recommend this tour (especially if you can get the Groupon!). read more

This 'out of the way' winery turns out to be well worth the ride. It's the real deal. First of all it's large! The vineyard is on the property growing Orange Muscat grapes. The tour takes you through the whole process from vine to bottle. It's a sophisticated operation and our guide Jannine (sp?) was really knowledgeable but very down to earth. The tour ends in the wine shop (where else?) -and tasting room. I lost track of how many wines we got to taste! The Cranberry dessert wine was my favourite but by that point I was ready to do a dance on the counter with a lamp shade on and the tasting wasn't even over yet. The last of the wines we tried were the Ice Wines. We were impressed as she explained the process of how they achieve this. I loved almost every wine I tried there. The prices range from 16 dollars up to 65 for the wines which can only be purchased there at Lulu Island. They're not available in stores. Check the website for information. The tour was really interesting and fun, my favourite part being the processing room with the presses and giant casks. If you can't get out to the Okanagan, or down to California's Sonoma or Napa valley's you should definitely give yourself the opportunity to check out this high quality local BC product at Lulu Island. read more

New winery and only minutes away from Richmond. Me and boys wanted to try some new local wine and Ballau recommended Lulu Island Winery. Everything was new about the estate, I was bit hesitant at first but after meeting one of the staff, Heather, we were in good hands. We tried their Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. And then they had two wonderful ice wine. The one that caught my friends taste bud was the blueberry wine which is quite different from other wineries. I guest maybe because it's a brand new establishment or we were just nice guys, but we were able to try every single wine they had available where most winery now days limit to 2 or 3 tasting, so that was a plus. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly, there was no pressure to buy, but we ended up with a bottle of Gewurztraminer and a bottle of Chardonnay, my friend picked up a blue berry wine. I also noticed they have this huge space ready for a restaurant, so i can't wait to come back when they have that all set up. read more

Skip the tasting if you like table wine. Tour was interesting. Our guide got a bit defensive regarding some fair questions, but whatever. This is clearly a winery that has had success with fruit wine and icewine (and it mainly ships to the Asian markets). But, that doesn't mean you know how to make table wine. Pinot Grigio should never be sweetness level 3! Meritage (North American version of Bordeaux) should not be just a 25% mix of four grapes because, well... the French might just add 5% of one grape but that's not how we do it (bizarre and lazy reasoning, and I'm pretty sure the French know what they're doing). I don't know much about wine but when my friends said I'm "brave" for have a single mouthful of the Cabernet Sauvignon you know something's wrong. Table wines were really poor. Icewines were ok. The tour guide said they didn't know why BC Liquor stores only want their raspberry wine out of all their portfolio. I know why. (And the phrase "really tantalizes your pallet" got me in trouble because I couldn't help but point out the spelling error... which our tour guide dismissed as actually correct in a condescending way.) Fun. And crap at the same time. P.s. If you want to get married there you can - just don't worry about the planes, and the smell of manure, and the train whistles, and the dog kennels next door. read more

I'm not an expert on ice wines but am a seasoned wine taster. Their ice wines taste good, but I don't think they are worth the price. They gave some chocolate and salmon jerky samples that were yummy and available for purchase. The main reason why I am giving this winery a 2-star review is because of the service of one of their staff members. They had passed out Chinese order forms, and I requested an English price list. She quickly retorted that the order form I had WAS in English and pointed the English lines to me and started reading some of the names of the wines to me as if I was an idiot. Thanks, it is EXTREMELY useful for you to treat me like I'm stupid, read to me what I already know how to read, and simultaneously not give me what I requested. Other than the names of the wines, all of the other descriptive information was in Chinese. So there would be a wine name, some Chinese, and then a price, for example like $1085. How the hell am I supposed to know what that means? That's exactly why I asked for an English price list. It wasn't until I asked my mom to explain what some words meant that I was able to discern that it was a number of bottles for that price. This was place was amazing. Had the best gentleman help us I can't remember his name unfortunately. But he was so helpful about ice wine and their wine selection. Went specifically for the Ice wine and ended up not buying any Ice wine it was way to sweet like putting a tablespoon of sugar in your mouth. We were able to taste 6 different wines for free. Coming from California near Napa where you pay for tastings was a nice treat !!! We loved the raspberry and blueberry wine. I'm going to use the raspberry and mix it with 7-Up to make a spritzer in the summertime! Blueberry was just really good on its own. We also got 2 bottles of the Pinot Gris because it was fantastic. Unfortunately we're traveling and I had to put it in checking luggage otherwise I would have bought so much more. They offer to bubble wrap it for a dollar a bottle. Way worth it. We had a group wine tasting here. The team at Lulu was extremely accommodating and friendly. They even had a Chinese menu for some of our overseas reps. This winery is known for it`s dessert and ice wines. (This is what they win medals for!) And to my delight and surprise, these wines are not over-the-top sweet. From the fruit wines our group tried the raspberry, cranberry, blueberry and passion fruit. (I preferred the raspberry) If this sounds like your thing, definitely visit this winery. read more

We stopped here recently as part of a tasting tour... The owner gave us a private tour, which was very informative. The tasting room is nice, and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. While they only grow a couple varietals on site (orange muscat and something else), the rest of the grapes are still grown in BC. Some of the whites were particularly good, and their meritage was really nice. The fortified wines were particularly good. If you're in the area, I'd suggest checking it out. read more

This winery is way overpriced!!! Don't buy it here. We got tricked to buy 1 case of overpriced wine and they convinced us that it is safe to carry the entire case on the airplane. They told us we would need to check in the case of wine as one luggage because they will not allow us to carry on to the plane. So that was the plan. The salesman packed the wine in a case. But as I watched in put 12 bottles into a big box, he did not use any bubble or stuffings. I kept asking him, "are you sure the case is not going to break". He kept assuring me that it would not break. Well guess what happened? When it arrived and we picked up the case of wine, 1 bottle was completely SHATTERED!! The wetness soaked all the other bottles and it was a mess to clean up. Also, when we were shopping at the vancouver international airport before our flight, we saw the exact same wines "DUTY FREE" for $20-$50 cheaper. I wish I waited and knew to buy it at the airport. This way I could buy it tax free and also hand carry it on to the plane. read more

Fabulous building and nice ambiance but somewhat pricey. With the exception of their white table wines, which are reasonably priced, the rest are 25 - 50% higher than comparable local wineries with equal or better quality. Specifically their Merlot and Icewines. As for the fruit wines, any ones, I'm not a fan of them because of their lack of character, besides sugar and boldness, but Lulu's Blueberry seems to be on the watery side. If I had to pick a favourite it would be their non-VQA, unique apple and grape Iceder - but at $31.95 for 375ml ... its expensive and without a rating, but tasty none the less. Of course quality and price are synonyms - but there is some confusion as to what Lulu Island's B.C. wines are actually made of. They advertise in their brochures as using only top quality BC. grapes but bulk Washington State grapes, and even U.S. grape concentrates, have been seen at their premise as reported by the Vancouver Sun. read more

Myself and a group of three others attended the Living Socials wine tour deal on Saturday, January 26, 2013. The first thing the tour guide asked us in a very imperative voice was what country in Europe we thought she was from. My husband said France, and her response was "France is a big country! Do you even know what part of France I am from?!!!" For the record, Canada is also a large country...and I am pretty sure she would not be able to tell from what part we were from... As the tour progressed she said there were over 300 different types of grapes. I said I knew of two - red and green. She did not find this funny. Her mouth tightened right up and she scowled at me. She then described the grapes and tannins and what was involved in the process of pressing the grapes. Having no knowledge about such things I asked her if you needed to have grapes with seeds to make wine...she turned to me and very loudly in front of everyone said "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT...?!!" Well I didn't know anything and I wanted to confirm but ok...bad question. The tour guide went on to describe the equipment involved for pressing the grapes. She said nowadays they only stomp the grapes to make port because they do not want too many seeds in the wine. I asked her if it would be easier to just use seedless grapes...and this sent her off on a nonsensical tirade about how no one in the history of wine tours had ever asked such a question and further to give me an answer, if she wanted her children to speak French here (in Richmond I guess) she would have to put them in French school or they would never learn...I was having trouble finding the correlation but ok...no French school equals bad wine..? At this point another group which was late joined us and I was able to melt into obscurity within the crowd. When we returned to the area we were to do the wine tasting she had softened up quite a bit. It is my personal opinion that the purpose of this was so that we would buy the wine...but the earlier experience with her had already soured things for me. The wine itself without the horrible tour guide was ok but not worth the abuse. This incident happened three days ago and I am still very upset. read more
