Ambiance is beautiful. My husband and I had the mozzarella and tomato appetizer. Disappointing, 6/10, but the basil was very fresh. We each had the alla norma pasta which had a great taste and nice presentation. I'd say 8.5/10. We'd had alla norma in Sicily and wanted to compare. I would say between 4 and 5 based on my experience with service during lunch time but would still give a 5 star rating for food because the food is outstanding. The place is a bit tight but the ambience is still lovely. Three of us went to lunch and there was no one else (literally) and we still had to ask for water, bread etc. The waiter couldn't care less. Once the food came, we forgot all our complaints. The salads (avocado and grapefruit ones) were fresh and delicious. We got penne alle Norma and cavatelli, both of which were fantastic, spaghetti puttanesca (very spicy/hot just a word of caution). We shared two desserts, tiramisu and the ricotta cheese cake, both of which were very good. All in all, it was a lovely meal. Interior cozy and welcoming. And the food! My husband had the handmade tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms - it was out of this world, tender and flavorful. I had the pette di pollo. The chicken breast was flattened, sauteed in butter and parmesan, and absolutely to die for. My kids ended up eating most of it! Good spot with a great selection of cocktails. This is one of the few Italian restaurants that's not BYOB. It's a bit pricier than other Italian places in the area however we have never had a bad meal here and service is great. Tonight's dinner was perfect. From the moment we sat down to the end even though they closed the kitchen before we could order dessert, everything else was delicious. We had wine and Ceasar salad to start with and octopus and lobster pasta for main entrees which was on the chefs special menu! The place was beautiful and service was great! My husband and I dine here frequently and always love the food, ambience and service. Last night, New Year's Eve, we decided to celebrate at home. Wondering where to order a special dinner to be delivered, we decided on Luna Rossa. We could not have been happier with the meal and the presentation. We both had the Polpettine di Manzo appetizer (large enough to save one for tonight); then we both had the Scalloppini Di Vitello ai Funghi which was absolutely delicious. It was also a large portion of veal, mashed potatoes, broccoli, carrots and green beans, smothered in mushrooms and delicious gravy. We waited a while before we had the dessert, a light and fluffy cheese cake, served with mint and candied cherries. Every dish was artistically presented and delicious to eat. I came with a friend who lives on the same block. She wanted the home made lemon pepper tagliatelle with ragu. I couldn't decide so i ordered the endive and shaved fennel salad with pear and walnuts as well as the grilled octopus salad. Both were divine! I also had the mussels and clams in a light tomato broth which was scrumptious. We finished with a gluten free chocolate cake with espresso ice cream which was rich and not too sweet. Took a chance on this place with 3 friends on a Friday night. We ordered: - Ravioli Mezzaluna alla Crema Tartufata - 2 orders of Gnocchi di Patate ai Fichi - Tagliatelle alla Bolognese - Bread for the table (free, thick slices with olives on the side, pit intact) Now, I am not usually a fan of Italian food. Luna Rossa completely blew me away! I personally tried the Tagliatelle and the Gnocchi, but my friend said that the Ravioli was incredible. The Tagliatelle was amazing and so flavorful, the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. The Fig Gnocchi was delicately flavored, perfectly balanced with fruity notes of the fig and truffle balsamic & truffle cheese. I've never had gnocchi that tasted so light and cloud-like. It was rich and slightly sweet, and so good! We all argued about whose dish was best. Prices are par for the course when you're looking at Italian food in the UES. Cocktails were strong but not too strong. 4 outdoor dining tables in a tent enclosure, with ample space between tables. There were space heaters and we were all really comfortable. We started with a homemade Fig Gnocchi in a butter sage sauce, topped with shaved truffle cheese that tasted a bit flat but had amazing texture. Wish chef used a little more truffle cheese. Entree was a special, pounded thin veal chop Milanese that was one of the best veal chop I've ever had, so tender and lightly pan fried and breaded. Dover sole, I was told was very good but came out slightly cold. Ricotta cheesecake and cannoli stole the show. Cappuccino good but weak. Service was very friendly but not spot on as other reviews noted. Lastly ask for a table in the back on a cold winter night, the table's by the front become very, very cold as Luna Rossa has a great take out business and the front door is consistently being opened by their delivery guys. read more

I normally absolutely love this place and love the Chef's food. But I was a solo diner supporting a local restaurant and they were so slow in serving me, I almost felt unwanted there. I understand bigger tables bring bigger money but I just wasn't feeling the local love - it took 15-20 minutes to get an initial menu to the point it was an embarrassment and then I had to keep asking for things. This is not service that you want from any type of restaurant or a way you want to feel at one. As much as I wanted to support this place, I don't feel like going back any time soon. The waiters completely ignore you, it's disappointing seeing I live across the road. I can't see myself going back after tonight. The place has no clue how to treat people. What a shame. read more

The service is phenomenal, comparative to that of a Michelin star restaurant! Even I felt young here and thought I should be sitting at the kiddie table back in the day at my great aunt and uncle's house in Brooklyn. The plate portions are not the largest, but the food tastes so good you won't mind not leaving with a food baby. Was here this past Saturday for a luncheon after a christening. The place is small and could easily be missed but was well worth the stop. The entire restaurant had been closed off for the event which was super nice, it is very small in here though, (I think the max is around 60) but it's great that your by yourselves. It is quiet a squeeze to get past the tables when they are set up this way (not sure how it looks on a regular day) but it worked out just fine. We were first offered either a red or white blend, I went with the red that was light but equally as good. The waiters never let your glass empty. For lunch, I started with the Burrata which was excellent. The prosciutto was delicious and it was perfectly dressed, really enjoyed it. I had the chicken Parmesan as my main entree, which was very good but a very small helping. It came with a scoop of mashed potatoes and there was a large platter of vegetables on the table to be shared. For dessert I went with the Tiramisu which was the best I've ever had! We discovered this neighborhood gem last summer when we were looking for pretty outdoor dining setups. They are extremely accommodating of a vegan diet and make a special penne primavera that rivals any pasta I've had in the city. The fried artichoke is as good as it is in Rome. The salad is light, crisp and a perfect way to start the meal. The spaghetti is cooked to perfection and has a delicious garlicky element. Also, the experience is top notch. According to OpenTable this location of Luna Rossa has only been open for about 6 months. It's definitely a welcome addition to this neighborhood that at times seems saturated with pseudo-Italian fare. Sources say that they make all their own pasta on site along with the desserts and the quality in freshly made pasta and desserts are certainly evident in both presentation and taste. The entrees that stretch beyond the pasta dishes are equally delicious. The Berkshire pork chops in particular was perfectly flavored and seasoned in a nice sauce. Staff are incredibly friendly and the atmosphere is both suitable for a casual dinner or a romantic date. Never in the way, but always there to please. Pricing for the entrees are in the $20 - $30 range and almost all the glasses of wine are all $10 each. So when it comes down to it you'll probably spend close to $45 per person when it comes to tacking on a drink and dessert. read more
