I initially tried to hire Home Depot to organize the repairs, but their agreements with builders prohibit HD builders from preparing the floors and cabinetry before finishes. It was a long series of disappointments over company policies. Miron was able to prepare the floors and cabinetry and match prices on HD finishes. Him and Carlos designed custom cabinetry, which improved storage, at no additional cost compared to HD. Miron referred me to DTLA floor and quartz dealers who had larger selection and good prices.

We hired Hueramo Construction in 2025 through a recommendation from our designer for a substantial…read moreexterior renovation project. The work ultimately included painting the entire house, stonework, fencing, railings, doors, garage doors, exterior improvements, and front yard work. I want to start by saying something important: we ultimately like the finished product. We selected the materials ourselves, stayed engaged throughout the process, and our home looks significantly improved from where it started. That said, getting there required far more homeowner oversight, follow-up, troubleshooting, and cleanup than we expected from a general contractor. The quoting process was difficult from the beginning. Multiple versions of the proposal were issued over months and it was often hard to understand exactly what changed between revisions or what remained included versus pending. We moved forward largely because of the recommendation and we understood our designer would not be project managing. When we agreed to move forward, we were told the project could reasonably be completed by November 2025. The project was ultimately completed months later. Construction delays happen and we tried to be realistic throughout the process. Our bigger issue was communication and project management. There were stretches where crews would appear inconsistently or not at all without notice. We had to ask repeatedly for updates instead of receiving proactive communication. Throughout the project there were also issues that, in our opinion, should have been prevented or managed by the GC. Examples included: * Fence measurements that were not correct initially, creating delays and resulting in one side requiring a patchwork outcome we were not satisfied with. * Requesting payment in advance beyond what California law allows, and indicating they didn't have the funds to move forward otherwise, which they then used to try to explain delays in the project * Paint ending up on our neighbor's property, including a brand new deck, which took months to address. * Windows painted shut, painting over keyholes in door locks. * Screens damaged, lost, or requiring replacement. * Newly installed stone later cracking after subsequent heavy work nearby. * Jobsite cleanliness concerns including debris and trash ending up in our recycling bin. * Broken items in our yard. Toward the end of the project, communication became more difficult. We sent a final punch list and requested updates multiple times before receiving responses. There were also punch list items we ultimately chose not to continue pursuing and instead hired others to complete. One issue that still stands out involved leftover materials. At project completion, a substantial amount of unused stone remained piled in our front yard. We were told moving it elsewhere on the property would be an additional charge because it was not included in the original scope. Rather than continue extending the project, we moved it ourselves over approximately two weeks. We estimate it was over 1,000 pounds total. Another disappointing moment came after final payment had already been processed. We learned our neighbor had still not been fully restored from earlier paint-related issues. Follow-up messages reportedly went unanswered and our designer again stepped in to help coordinate completion. We only realized the remaining work had occurred because we happened to see it being done. To be fair, we learned a lot through this process too. In hindsight we would have insisted on a more structured scope document, stronger milestone tracking, clearer closeout expectations, and more written communication. Construction projects are messy and we never expected perfection. But when hiring a general contractor, we did expect stronger supervision, communication, workmanship oversight, cleanup, and ownership of issues when they arose. In the end, the house looks good and the project did get completed. We appreciate that.
