This tour was definitely a highlight of our trip! Captain John and Charlie were great and all the passengers aboard had a great time! We passed three lighthouses-Peck Ledge LH, Sheffield Island LH and Green's Ledge LH. Charlie, co-captain of Captain John, had just toured the inside of Green's Ledge LH the day before which is listed on Airbnb for $6,000! He went around the ship showing everyone the floor plan. It especially exciting to be on the Long Island Sound and to see the red and white towers from Northport, since I live on Long Island!! We were able to see several different viewpoints of the sunset and osprey nests as well. Definitely recommend to residents of Norwalk AND tourists alike!

Like a lot of other dork type middle age dudes I'm a sucker for a good lighthouse. Actually I've…read morebeen to a few clinkers which says that I'm apparently I'm also a sucker for a bad lighthouse as well but there's no need to worry about that at Sheffield because it's all good here. So if you want to come you've got two legal options. 1. Show up via kayak (or I suppose boat then taking a short swim) during hours when they are running tours and you will be met on the shore by a volunteer who will ask you to pay a few dollars for the privilege of taking the lighthouse tour/hanging out on the island. 2. Or, you come via the regularly scheduled boat that runs from the dock on North Water Street in Norwalk from late May until the end of September. There are various public & private decks for parking all around the area so it shouldn't be too hard to find a close space. I don't remember what the price is for option #1 but for option #2 the below currently apply: Adults: $22.00 - Children 12 & Under: $12.00 Senior / NSA Member $20.00 Active Military with ID $10.00 Children 3 & Under: $5.00 Family 4 Pack (2 Adults, 2 Children) $55.00 A few random facts: Boats depart weekends only every year over Memorial Day weekend and eventually go daily from July until Labor Day and then back to weekends only until the end of September. Check seaport.org for the current schedule and for special events such as their clambakes. Once you get to the island you get to take a brief tour of the lighthouse which was built in 1868 (downstairs only for now as the upstairs tower portion is being worked on and hopefully tours will be allowed there in the not to distant future once they get the stairs in better shape along with figuring out a way to dissipate the heat which we were told was well over 100 degrees the day we were there in August) and you can also walk through the nature trail via the Stewart B. McKinney Wildlife Refuge. If you are going to walk on the nature trail or along the beach that fronts Sheffield Island Harbor just know that things are "wild" and that you will get eaten alive by flies, mosquitoes and I wouldn't be shocked if the trees had lots of ticks. The lighthouse was relit in 2011 for the first time in 91 years. Why Sheffield Island? The island was named after Revolutionary War veteran Captain Robert Sheffield who bought the island in 1804. He married Temperance Doty, a Mayflower descendant and such started the current lineage of the island's name. The 47 acre island is private property that is primarily owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with the Norwalk Seaport Association depending upon the website owning only three or four of those acres. You will be reminded a few times of where you can and cannot walk. Speaking of an area you can't walk by it would be the dilapidated house on the right near the dock. That house is still owned by the Stabell family who sold the island to the Norwalk Seaport Association in 1986 for 700K. I forget the exact story we were told but it's something along the lines of the "home" (more of a dilapidated shack) cannot be renovated because of Fish and Wildlife Service rules and if they raze the structure they lose the land so the shack stands as is. The island itself is around a mile and half from the dock in Norwalk and the boat is kept at a country club pace in both directions which equals about 40 minutes to make the trip in each direction. This is fine as one of the crew did a fairly good job or telling everyone about some of the various islands & lighthouses & birds in the area and about the local shellfish industry. Past that it's just sit back and relax on some of their picnic benches and have a picnic or don't do a damn thing except the enjoy the beautiful view. Either way it's awesome.

We were a bit nervous about…read moretrusting a company we never used, but given the timing of both flights (one very, very early in the morning and one red eye) we decided it was worth the money, and a safer option. We received a confirmation via email, and someone called afterward to confirm all of the details. After a good conversation wherein our concerns were addressed, we thought we were good to go. We were assured that they monitor the flights so they know when one has been delayed, discussed the scent issue mentioned in a below review, etc. They even told us that they have back-up vehicles and drivers in case there is an issue. The only reason Awan gets 2 stars instead of 1 is that the driver who took us to the airport was early, prepared, gracious, and an excellent driver. The car was clean. Had we the same experience coming home, this would have been a five star review. Alas, this morning we flew into JFK and by the time we retrieved our bags it was 6:20. Our ride was due at 6, per the confirmation email. Were we missing a person with a sign? Were we in the wrong spot? A review of the confirmation email revealed that everything was indeed correct. We thought it was a little odd that we had not received a text or call from our driver, so my husband called. He called three times and there was no answer. While he continued to search around the pick-up area, I checked their facebook and website trying to find another phone number or perhaps something we had somehow missed. Then I called. I sent a message via facebook. At this point, I think it is important to note that Awan advertises that they are open 24/7, and that they answer the phones at all hours. This is simply false. Finally on my second try, someone answered the phone sounding annoyed. I handed the phone off to my husband, since he had the email with the confirmation number and the guy basically just asked if we booked online, blew us off when J pointed out that there had been multiple forms of communication regarding the trip by claiming that they "just didn't have it in their system", and told us to "just go ahead and take the Uber if we want to". Thankfully there was an Uber nearby and it was the same price as Awan would have charged us, had they bothered to show up. Thankfully it was on our way home and not on our way to the airport. But regardless, the experience really speaks to how unprofessional they can be, how poor the customer service is, the fact that they are unreliable, and that their advertising is false. There are any number of things that could have been done differently to rectify the situation, but apparently whomever was on duty today did not feel like doing a single one of them since the conversation was not long enough for him to have checked his system, looked up an email, or done anything that would have indicated that he actually looked into the issue or cared. He did not apologize, he did not offer to send a car or discount our first trip.... he was just dismissive and rude. Avoid at all costs; a fifty percent likelihood that they are going to magically lose a trip that was confirmed in their system is not worth missing a flight or an aggravating time trying to get home after a long travel day/night.

The flight was 45 minutes early, but the driver had checked the flights and already knew this. He actually called me while I was still on the plane to let me know he would be there and where to meet him. It took us a little while to get through immigration/customs etc and when we came out the arrivals entrance he was waiting. The car was a brand new Lincoln and very comfortable and clean. The driver was courteous and took the quickest way back to Dobbs. Overall a hassle free experience and I will definitely use them again. It's like a limo service, but your car is the limo and you rent the chauffeur. The advantages are that unlike a limo, you only pay for the driver and you get the safety of having a pro drive for you and you get to have that extra drink with out breaking a law or your neck. We've used Mark's for airport runs and a night in NYC (went 3 places without worrying about parking, drinking, etc). The only downside I can see is if you have a nasty or really small car.
