Lupo was voted one of top restaurants in Canada and I'd have to say that I agree. It's adorably charming being located in a heritage home in downtown. I'm a total sucker for heritage homes and this restaurants pulls off an elegant yet homey vibe. The delicious food they offer is Italian but the prices are a bit on the higher side. However, for the amount of food you're getting with the amazing quality and great service it's definitely justified. Their caprese salad comes with such a creamy succulent buffalo mozzarella and refreshing plump tomatoes that pop with zest in your mouth. I always make sure to order Canelloni when I see it on a menu since it is a hard dish to come by in Italian restaurants because, even though it's absolutely delizioso, it's not the quickest dish to make; but it's worth the wait I assure you. It's stuffed with tender veal and fresh spinach and drenched (in a good way) with delicious Parmesan cheesy sauce. My husband and I came here to eat dinner and celebrate my birthday. I made a reservation because I wanted to make sure that we don't have to wait long just incase they are busy. We have arrived, the hostess sat us, but I forgot to have added in my reservation to get the romantic window seat. But it's ok, next time I will request it. The restaurant is an Old Victorian House. Yes, it's a house that's turn into a restaurant. It's really romantic from the outside and through inside of the restaurant. Of course We ordered appetizers; the Wagyu Beef Carpaccio and Foie gras. OMG, It was delicious I was speechless. I was so happy eating it and that's how delicious it was. For our mains I had the lobster with dark pasta (looks black) and no it's not a squid pasta but it was delicious!! My husband had the special of the night which was the short ribs ravioli. I am telling you, the best Ravioli I have ever had. It was so soft and creamy delicious. I couldn't believe how delicious it was. And it wasn't so heavy at all. I'm pretty surprised by how well-loved this restaurant seems to be among Yelpers. I visited for my anniversary this month, expecting to be blown away, and was mostly let down instead. Bread basket. 1/5. This was a few slices of commercially prepared bread. It wasn't special, it wasn't artisanal. It wasn't even warm. It certainly wasn't complimentary, and in fact cost $7. It arrived so close to our appetizer arriving that we ended up eating it after our meal because it took so long to prepare. Rabbit Tagliatelle. 3/5. This was good, not great. Rabbit was tender and the meat was flavourful. The tagliatelle were clumped together and seemed to have been prepared with a lack of care. The pasta did not have the 'bite' to it that I get from other high-end Italian places (I'm thinking of Savio Volpe, frankly.) Porterhouse veal steak. 3/5. They know how to cook meat here. Nothing exceptional, unfortunately. The demi-glace was very nice, as were the vegetables. They were cut into oddly irregular sizes. Maybe I'm being fussy, but if I'm paying high-end prices, I sort of assume a basic level of knife skills? Chocolate passionfruit dessert. 5/5. This (and the wine) saved the evening for us. Delicious. Perfect flavors and textures. One of the best desserts I've had recently. This course singlehandedly bumped Lupo from two stars to three, in my mind. The ambience was fine. Calling it romantic might be going too far. We could hear the conversation of the people at the table next to us, who were talking about how difficult it is to work with Nick Jonas. Another table appeared to be full of models. All of this together gave me the sense that Lupo is somewhere people want to be seen, or to casually drop into conversation, and the food is just incidental. Service was pleasant. Good wine menu. Value was not good. Similar prices to Savio Volpe, Cin Cin, or Zefferelli's, but much less care put into the food. Maybe they were having a bad night. A girlfriend and I decided to go out for a fancy dinner during our recent trip to Vancouver, and Lupo won! We found it on a Yelp list of great restaurants in Vancouver and made reservations. Though I guess they take walk-ins when they have space, it seems more like a reservation-only type of place. It filled up very quickly while we were there, so make reservations if you want to go! Our server greeted us kindly as we came in, took our coats, and promptly seated us. The building is an old house, so we were seated in the "living room". It's very cozy, and they lit the fireplace up so it was very fun! Unfortunately, the building doesn't absorb noise very well and it got rather loud before long. The menu was impressive- lots of items that were unique and creative! I ended up choosing the Sablefish special for the night, since I'd never had sablefish and it came with a orange-soy sauce. This dish was the most impressive thing about the night. The fish was cooked to perfection and the sauce made it absolutely melt in my mouth! It was fabulous! The vegetables that came with it were mediocre, they didn't have much flavor and were a little chewy. My friend ordered the gnocchi which was also delicious! As a drink, I ordered an Aperol Spritz- nothing special, and she ordered the house white wine which was also nothing special. The first disappointment for me was the bar. I originally asked for a Moscow Mule. It's a common drink and their Yelp page said they had a full bar. Our server said they couldn't do a Mule because they had no ginger ale! What kind of place claiming to have a "full bar" doesn't have ginger ale? It seems like a staple bar item, in my opinion. Honestly, a restaurant of this level should be as attentive to their bar as to their kitchen. Very sad. I normally don't order dessert, but we decided to splurge and make the most of the night. My decision was mostly based on the fact that they had crème brûlée! This was their chance to recover from the bar disappointment. Sadly, this dessert ended up being the second disappointment of the night. They brought it out having already torched the top of it. It wasn't on fire! That's nearly all the fun of ordering a crème brûlée at a restaurant, especially a fancy one! I almost cried. It seemed a cheap, lazy move on their part. My friend ordered tiramisu, which was average. The final, and most painful, disappointment was the price at the end of the night. The special I had ordered ended up being a few dollars more than I was sure the server had told us. Three dollars isn't a lot to most people, but I live on a very tight budget and it was already an expensive dinner without the 3 extra surprise dollars. There's a chance I misheard her, but it was disappointing nonetheless. For what I paid, I expected the dining experience to be much better than it was. Our server was excellent, the bathrooms were clean, and the food was decent. If I'm ever in Vancouver again, I doubt I'll return to Lupo. There are so many other unique restaurants that are worth trying in downtown Vancouver, and I can bet most of them are cheaper AND have ginger ale! Delicious home made Italian food. We shared a few antipasto to start- beef carpaccio, burrata and meatballs. Yum to all. But the meatballs were my favorite. Then we shared a pasta with mushrooms. Tasty but rich. I would not have wanted a full order but enjoyed a few bites. Pasta is homemade and fresh. We also shared the veal special which was so so good. Potatoes were creamy and buttery and it had a flavorful mushroom sauce. So good! We shared a few bottles of the house red. It was okay. Wine list is very expensive. Took a star off for that. How many people are ordering 150 plus bottles of wine. They need to add more affordable options. And they had a very small cocktail list. Service was 5 star. Friendly and attentive. Lupo surprised us. It's located in a house, the restaurant is two stories and it was overall very good. The only reason why it isn't 5* is because of the lack of seasoning on some of the dishes. Here is what we got: Focaccia - 5/5. This is the first restaurant I've been to in a LONG time that serves a traditional, piping hot beautiful and phenomenal focaccia. This is worth every penny. Buratta - 4/5. It was the special of the night, beautifully presented. Gnocchi di ricotta - 3/5. Wouldn't order this one again. Taglierini - 5/5. The amount of mushrooms in the dish blew my mind. The food overall was decent, but nothing to write home about. For the money I could have a much more enjoyable meal somewhere like Bishops. The server was friendly and helpful. What made them lose an extra star was the attitude of the person who brought the bill to our table. She knew full well that this was a birthday celebration, and yet, the moment I leave the table to go to the washroom, she brings the bill to the birthday girl without us even asking for it. She then stood there with the credit card machine waiting for payment instead of leaving the bill on the table for us to review and pay once I was back at the table. We're from Europe and just moved to Vancouver a while ago so when we go to an Italian restaurant we're expecting true Italian food and that's what we got at lupo. I made a reservation online for 7pm on a friday only 45 minutes before arriving. The ambience is quite nice, not too dark, not too shiny, very subtle. Service was great and we especially liked the way Salvatore was serving us. Honest and with a proper opinion on how Italian food should be. Thumbs up. We ordered a bottle of white wine which was rather pricey but I guess that's normal for Vancouver. Started with focaccia, burrata and vitello tonato. It was all heaven! Had fettuccine with only butter and truffles, even though our waiter told us that Italian might be slightly better, it reminded us ecactly of what we had in Sicily! We then ordered veal with a chianti reduction mushrooms and veggies. Everything was so on point! We asked for al dente pasta and it was exactly what we got, not easy to find here! They had called me the day before to confirm reservations as I had made them a couple weeks in advance, and I appreciated the follow up. We started with the wagyu beef carpaccio which just melted in my mouth. Totally divine. He ordered the linguine vongole, and I ordered the black tagliatelle. We got the romaine salad and mascarpone polenta for the sides. We shared everything family style. The sauces were just so, so good. The portions were just right, not small and not too much. I'm a whimp and was afraid the heat would be too much in the tagliatelle, but the chef had the right amount of jalepeno added. We ordered forcaccia bread, octopus mosaic, wagyu carpaccio, assorted salamis, foie gras parfait, taglierini pasta, truffle pasta, dry aged rib eye, roasted quail and lamb shank. Service: Decent. Filled our waters several times and was able to answer questions about the food. Food: Majority of the food lacked flavor. The quality in the ingredients and how it was prepared was great however everything was under seasoned. The foie gras parfait was the one thing i really enjoyed. YES YES YES!! Lupo wins my heart right from the very start! With a super cozy home atmosphere, their service was attentive and quick, while still leaving you with some privacy and peace. I fell in love with their truffle linguini the first time I went - with such a simple list of ingredient, they mastered pasta in such a beautiful way - I was about cry with every bite. Mind you, I am the biggest truffle fan ever, so I have very high expectations when it comes to truffle ANYTHING. We also ordered the lamb rack which was better the first time than the second time. At our first visit, the meat literally fell off of the bone! It was so perfectly seasoned, with an amazing crunch near the top of the rack. We also tried their truffle pork chop/short ribs(?) which had zero truffle taste and was hard to chew. I still enjoyed the smokiness of it but probably will skip it for my future visit. Wowza! My friend and I dined at Lupo for the first time, last night. It was a lovely experience from service and food perspective. And the restaurant itself is charming to say the least. The original fireplace remains in this late 1800s home - now Lupo. We started with one of the specials a burrata cheese with heirloom tomatoes and parm crisps. The burrata was smooth and creamy. Divine! I ordered the rack of lamb for my main which came with a broccoli rabe pesto, a mushroom risotto ball, and roast veg. I'm gonna go ahead and say that that rack of lamb is probably the best piece of meat I've ever eaten in my life, and I grew up in Cowtown, I mean Calgary. It was succulent! My friend ordered one of the specials - a lobster and shrimp tortellini. I ate one and it was spot on, rich-tasting in a handmade pasta that looked like tulips. For dessert we ordered the mascarpone maple cheesecake and a lemon cake with gelato. Both were delicious! I should add that they serve a selection of breads and olive oil at the beginning of our meal. The service was awesome - our server was friendly and knowledgeable. Super soft cheese with lovely veggies. Very tasty. The wagu beef carpaccio had a perfect balance of flavors. For mains we tried the sable fish, truffle pasta, rib eye, fettuccine with asparagus and prosciutto, and tortellini stuffed with braised short ribs, caramelized onions and mascarpone cheese. Truffle pasta was.. Wow! Buttery goodness with lots of truffle and a perfect al dente fettuccine. Our table preferred all the pasta dishes compared to the other mains, but it was all delicious. We shared the espresso cheese cake and dark chocolates pecan torte for dessert. Sooo good. Not too sweet which I prefer. I finished the night with a wonderful espresso. Lupo lived up to my expectations and more. The restaurant itself is incredibly well appointed to create an intimate and private setting. The art placed throughout the restaurant is beautiful. We ordered our starter and main meals at the same time, and my only complaint was that they all came out at once within 5 minutes of ordering. It would have been nice to have a bit more time between ordering to enjoy our drinks. Our main courses were top notch and generous in size. I felt they were well priced at about $40 each. Our dessert was also amazing - the tiramisu was one of the better ones I've ever had. Beautiful restaurant which feels as though you are stepping into someone's home and pulling up a chair. My mom and I ordered a carpaccio to start with was one of the specials. The sauce was incredible and we devoured it within a minute. I ordered the black tagliatelle which was delicious. Very light sauce with a great amount of seafood in the dish. But my mom ordered the better pasta which is the taglerini mushroom, which was so incredible delicious. Highly recommend this pasta. We finished the meal with the gelato assortment and tartufo. This is a place we have been wanting to try for years! Finally we made it for an anniversary dinner and it was a great experience and great for the occasion! Lupo is a heritage style home that has been converted into an Italian restaurant. It is incredibly charming and gives you all the warm and welcoming feelings when you walk inside. The dim lighting and glass feature windows surrounding give off that cozy glow when seated! Our server was Lesly and she was super relaxed, friendly, and checked in with us an appropriate amount throughout the evening. The menu has lots of options, however, I think my one point of feedback is that they don't have a risotto dish, and for an Italian restaurant, I really wish they did! For our antipasto, we had the burrata and the parmigiano custard (like a soufflé). For our primi, we had the ricotta gnocchi and the feature pasta, fettuccine with warm butter and freshly shaved truffles. For our dolci we ordered the warm orange almond cake. The burrata was as good as expected and we loved the fresh flavours that accompanied. The parmigiano custard was SO GOOD and probably quite underrated. It is served with a parmigiano cheese crisp on top and a thin toasted bread crisp at the bottom - if you're a cheese lover, you'll really like this! The pastas are made in house! The gnocchi were cooked perfectly and the flavours were vibrant. The truffle pasta was amazing! A super simple dish, but if you're a truffle lover, I highly recommend...they bring the truffles to the table and shave them onto your pasta, right in front of you, in what I would consider to be a generous amount! While the orange almond cake probably isn't their most popular choice, I really loved the flavours of the dessert. The cake was extremely moist and the citrus flavour was just what I needed to round out a richly flavoured dinner. We enjoyed Prosecco by the glass, some burrowing owl white Chardonnay, and for our anniversary, they topped us off at the end of the meal with complimentary ice cold moscato - we thought this was a really nice and refreshing touch! We were quickly seated at a table in the main floor, and decided to order: Octopus appetizer: this was beautifully presented, and the octopus was very tender Fettuccine with chicken and peas: nice texture on the pasta Taglierini with mushrooms: this dish was very simple, but loved the pasta, as well as the mushrooms (favorite dish of the night) Short rib: nice and tender, though I wish we would have ordered more pasta instead Overall, based on the food and the service, we really enjoyed dinner here, and look forward to returning again in the future. read more

I spent weeks planning my family's food stops during our weeklong stay in Vancouver, but out of all of the restaurants we enjoyed, this stands out as something special. First, there's the ambience. A house converted into a restaurant, Lupo feels like you've been invited over by a friend to enjoy their Italian grandmother's specialties. It's cozy and welcoming, not pretentious. Then, there's the service. Our waiter was lovely, but the entire staff made a point of checking in with us, keeping our water glasses filled, and making sure our needs were met. Finally, there's the food. Wow. While other places might heap on the flavors, Lupo seems to specialize in simplicity, letting the ingredients speak for themselves. Example: I ordered the special, fresh noodles in a light, buttery sauce topped with truffles added at the table. Probably four to five ingredients total, but the effect was pure magic. Easily the best pasta I've ever eaten. Honestly, everything we sampled was mouth-watering. The burrata was light and melted in the mouth. The wine was perfect and kept chilled, the waiter deftly refilling our glasses when he noted they'd run low. The desserts were light and creative and simply delicious. I feel like I can pick and choose things I liked less than others -- the mozzarella appetizer, for example, wasn't my favorite, and I didn't love the lemon tart -- but that's only because some dishes were so amazing that they set the bar insanely high. In other words, even my least favorite dishes would have been the standouts at pretty much any other restaurant. I hate to say this, but I was a little disappointed when I walked in. Their photos on Yelp made the interior look so beautiful and grand. When we arrived, I immediately noted that it had more of an antique feel and that the space was cramped. Our large party was seated at a semi private nook towards the back. The server was really charming and patient with us. Half of our party ordered a bottle of wine together. He made sure our glasses were always filled. Maybe our large rowdy group of girls wasn't the right match for this dimly lit quaint little restaurant? We found ourselves having to hush constantly because the rest of the restaurant was so quiet. As for the food, they definitely knew what they were doing. I had the duck confit entree and I could have licked my plate clean. I don't even have words for it. Spent a couple days in Vancouver for a concert and decide to have a great dinner so I picked Lupo because of the good reviews. The place is very small so I was surprise we manage to get a reservation on a short notice, on Wednesday night the place was packed. Atmosphere is great! its feel very much like you are at home but have someone cook and serve you an amazing meal. Service is great, no rush at all, I almost thought that they forgot about us but we did asked more time at first so that was fine. Long wine list and a lot of great wine but since we brought our own Ridge bottle from California we didn't purchase their wine we only paid 35 Canadian dollar corks fee that was acceptable too for a good restaurant. Nicely put together menu as well , they have everybody covered, as a carb free diet, meat lover, vegetarian/vegan dishes. I had the quail and that was outstanding, the dish was so light I had room for desert. It is located in the middle of the tall building so there aren't any view if that is important to you but the food and atmosphere you will remember for a long time. I highly recommend Lupo. Both the service and food was excellent. We were there for the first time for a celebratory dinner and it was absolutely lovely. Our server, Carmen, was attentive but also delightful and authentic. We enjoyed all of our courses, with the Rack of Lamb special being especially delicious. The prices of entrees are on the higher end, but absolutely worth it, the prices of other courses are very reasonable for the setting and quality. Lupo is in a turn of the century house. The ambience was lovely, however if you have mobility issues you should note that there are about 10 steps to the front door and a curved staircase to the second level where the bathrooms are located. read more

Spent my anniversary dinner at Lupo as it's one restaurant that we've driven by all the time but never had the opportunity to try, and now we do! The quaint ambiance was nice change from some pretentious restaurants in Van. We shared the daily special, ravioli with braised short ribs. This was my favorite! I had Veal Scaloppini while my husband had the special Tenderloin. Both were cooked perfectly, just a comment the veal was a little overly salty especially with prosciutto. Let's talk dessert. After being so highly recommended by a fellow Yelper and trusted source, I was very much looking forward to experiencing Lupo. Sadly, at 8:30, I wasn't as hungry as I had hoped to be so instead of just ordering one entree, I chose two starters. The Carpaccio and the Burrata Special. I wholeheartedly believe that the eyes eat first and they certainly feasted to their heart's content. Both dishes were so thoughtfully and breathtakingly composed. A symphony of color, dimension, and texture. Pictures don't do them justice. The Burrata was divine. Easily the best I've had. The grilled zucchini rose was perfectly cooked, not mushy at all. The fresh tomatoes and golden beets were top quality. The salad of arugula and little gem lettuce was delicately dressed. Along with the rich, slightly sweet balsamic drizzle and nutty olive oil, all of these components paired incredibly well with the star of the dish, the heavenly Burrata. I absolutely love carpaccio and was very excited as I awaited it's arrival. This dish was unlike any carpaccio I have ever had. The 1/2 of a soft boiled quail egg in the center was a richly delicious little surprise not listed in the menu description. The several arugula leaves sprinkled on top added just the right amount of light peppery crunch to each bite. The whole grain mustard was the most mild I have ever had. Hardly any brininess or acidity. Thankfully, the baby artichokes brought that needed hint of brininess and acidity. The shaved Reggiano was wonderful but the amount seemed to overwhelm the other flavors. The element that didn't make sense to me was the creamy white sauce drizzled generously over the carpaccio. It tasted of a more liquid version of crème fraîche but when I asked the server, the answer she relayed to me from the kitchen was that it was a mustard/mayo sauce. Surprising, since it didn't taste as such in the least. Whatever the sauce was, it didn't taste bad, but it did completely overpower the dish, even the Reggiano. When I have beef Carpaccio, I like to taste the meat, which of course needs to be of high quality grade to be used for carpaccio. Sadly, I couldn't taste the flavor of the delicate, thinly sliced meat at all due to the creamy sauce. If I have this again, I will definitely order it with a very light drizzle or skip the sauce all together. The service was exceptional. From the host to the two servers who took care of me. Not a bit of pretentiousness, which I find can be common in upscale establishments. Not here, only genuine hospitality from what I experience. There were so many wonderful dishes on the menu. I very much look forward to returning and trying others. read more
