Especially if you find a great chiropractor who offers herbal remedies and nutritional advice as well as a reliable form of Chiropractic, which Anne French does. I have to say I was dubious when I was recommended this place. Anne practices Applied Kinesiology, a chiropractic diagnostic method using your muscle strength to determination subsequent therapy. It feels strange to have these strength experiments performed on your body part, but I cannot deny the results after being treated by her. I felt immediate relief. She also does a great job and making you feel relaxed. Sadly I haven't been back for more treatments, which is recommended as one treatment alone won't fix the problem, but this is just because of a lack of money. Low back pain and sciatica…read more We've all heard it before, somebody bends forward, either to brush their teeth or pick up a pencil and bam, there goes the back then a little while laterthe leg as well! As chiropractors low back pain is one of the most common complaints we see, followed by what is generally know as sciatica. What is sciatica? Sciatica is a broad based term which means pain in the sciatic nerve. There are many causes of this type of pain and possibly the most common is a disc prolapse. The discs are the cartilage like 'jam donuts' which are situated in between each of your spinal bones and are there for easy spinal movement and shock absorption. When too much pressure has been applied to a particular area of the disc, some of the disc material tears or bulges out. This then causes localised inflammation which then presses on the nerve root, and most commonly this nerve root will go on to form the sciatic nerve which supplies the muscles, joints and skin in your leg. People tend to assume that because the pain surfaced after one particular movement, then that's how long the problem has been there for. However that is a common misconception; disc's bulge, due to repetitive faulty motion in the back over months or years. The mechanics around the area begin to de-stabilise until that area can't take any more pressure. Then that final (often very simple) movement is the straw that breaks the camel's back. What about taking pain killers or muscle relaxants? Pain killers and muscle relaxants can dull the pain, especially when the muscles around the affected area tighten up. However, these are not treating the actual problem. By not correcting the faulty mechanics or addressing the cause of the problem the actual spinal dysfunction remains. Ice is a great alternative to painkillers as it works locally on the area and has none of the unwanted side effects that many medications have. Most disc and low back problems are easily corrected by chiropractic - by ensuring the local mechanics in the area are working properly the inflammation around the nerve root can be decreased relatively quickly. However, for the actual disc material to be heal back into the 'jam donut' takes a lot longer anywhere between 6 months to 2 years. It is important to realise that the main cause of low back and sciatica are lifestyle choices the most common ones are poor posture especially when at a desk or doing a faulty movement pattern over a long period of time. These problems never happen suddenly. Therefore it is important to get a work place assessment or come to one of our health classes! Considering most people spend most of their lives at work nowadays it's important to make sure that work place ergonomics are correct. Little changes here and there can make all the difference between being able to go to work or having to call in sick for a week because you're back has 'gone'. Regular spinal check-ups are also a great way to ensure that your spinal mechanics are working properly. That's it, I'm addicted to Bikram Yoga!!…read more I've always wanted to like yoga but have quite often struggled with it in the past. When I dedicate time to exercise, I want to work up a sweat and feel like I'm really getting the benefit. And as lovely as it is to lie on the floor, feeling the connection with certain parts of my body, I just don't feel like I'm getting value for my time and money. Bikram, however, is different. This is a 90 minute yoga class completed in a room heated to 45 degrees that works muscles in your body that you never knew existed. Boy, did I ache after my first couple of classes! The session involves 2 breathing exercises and 26 postures, all of which are repeated twice. You move between the postures quite quickly, and with the addition of the heat you get a really good cardiovascular workout, at the same time as improving your core strength and flexibility. The class is designed to balance and strengthen every system in the body, to promote weight loss, prevent injury and illness, and limit the effects of aging. At the risk of sounding very new-worldy, it's also supposed to promote mental clarity and reduce stress by developing concentration, self control, patience and determination. All of the teachers at BITL are fantastic. They are very knowledgeable and encouraging. They learn everyone's name quickly and will help you reach the correct postures during the class to make sure you are getting the maximum benefit without the risk of injury. They are also always available before and after the class for a chat and advise if needed. The room here is spacious and the front wall is lined with mirrors which really helps you to connect and focus during the class. The room can be a little smelly and it's best not to think of the volume of sweat that is soaked into the carpet! There are shower rooms and communal showers for use afterwards although these can get busy. Maximum class size is about 30 and there is a good mix of ladies and gents. Classes are quite expensive, about £13 for a drop in session, but you can also bulk buy classes or get an unlimited monthly package. They also have great discounts on introduction packages. There are usually four classes spread throughout the day so it's easy to fit into most schedules. There are mats and towels to rent, and drinks, snacks, books and kit available to buy. Bikram is a yoga revelation for me. It feels like you are getting a complete detox as well as a good workout. It's even encouraged me to eat healthier and reduce my alcohol intake - this probably won't last, but might as well make the most of it while I'm motivated! The only negative for me is the location. The studio is right in the centre of town so getting there can be a nightmare, especially at weekends, and parking is an extra cost on the already pricey classes.

It's a great place for all you yoga experts and novices. So, lets just clarify - Bikram yoga consists of 90 mins of intense yoga (26 different positions) in a hot and humid room. The heat and humidity mean that the positions are less intense on your muscles (it's surprising how un-achy you feel the next day) and also detox your body. Because of the heat - you will sweat like you've never sweated before - you do need to wear as little as possible - bikinis are ideal, though I opted for teeny weenie shorts and a sports bra. Also, water is a must, a big old bottle of it. The classes are run by a selection of teachers, all very well trained and from various parts of the world. They really know what they're doing, and keep a close eye on the Bikram 'freshers', encouraging them to take a minute out if it's all getting too much. Unlike some yoga schools I've been to, the room is modern and recently decorated, and doesn't smell of feet. That's always a plus. They also have yoga mats and towels to rent, and clean changing rooms and showers (much needed). Bikram is expensive, more so than other types of yoga, however it is a very long work out. Bikram in the Lanes offer an unlimited deal for beginners too, so you can see if you like it before signing up for anything long term. Bikram is really worth going to just for the experience, and Bikram in the Lanes is a great place to get started.

As someone who has become allergic to…read moregluten (not just mildly intolerant like everyone else), I have found his knowledge of Ayurveda to be both insightful and on point. I have every reason to trust his expertise as his diagnosis has been backed up by others I have seen in a similar vein, and his recommendations have shown benefits in working my way back to health. Making a life change is unlikely to ever be easy. We put up all kinds of barriers for ourselves and are usually our own biggest obstacle in making forward progress in 'difficult' areas. I've had to give up a lot of the foods I love, but Sascha's help and support have made this possible - both through outlining what I needed as well as adding supplements that help move this process forward. Coming back to health from a place of toxicity is going to involve detoxing, and this is the part of the process that often feels worse than the state of dis-ease that you may have been in. He recommended a very simple, healthy yet positively non-restrictive diet changes (according to my doshas), and a course of herbs, some of which I'm still taking (Sasha's approach to healing is gentle and consistent, and the results are lasting and profound). Because I believe that all pathology stems from the unresolved emotional issues, I have now signed up for a Shadow Work workshop this July. Guess it will be challenging, but most rewarding things in life tend to feel that way at first. Besides, the only way is through it. Will update.
