Second Life was an essential to me: I found Cole Hahn and AVL leather flats (almost unworn), numerous silk blouses (Marchesa Voyage, Annie Griffin), two silk skirts (one bespoke, the other from Anthropologie), dresses, jackets, a string of cultured pearls, Chicos and Eileen Fisher trousers - oh, and my last trip there, I actually scanned the books, and the selection is equally good there. Prices are higher than your average thrift, but, as you can see, so is the merchandise. It's always fair, and they run sales on the regular. I've been inspired to start putting aside some of my almost unworn or lightly worn clothes so that I can contribute to this community treasure, and keep the cycle going. The experience with staff and volunteers may be hit or miss. Some of very good. Others not. Several years ago I volunteered regularly and enjoyed both my placement in the back room pricing donations and working on the floor with customers. I have witnessed both the manager being very kind to a person in need and the men working the cash register being rather unfriendly. Back then the paid staff did not appear to have been hired with a nod toward good customer service. I doubt if the hiring practices have changed based on a recent visit. While shopping, I ended up helping an older gentleman because the person at the counter was unnecessarily curt when asked a simple question like where-would-I-find-a- book? One assumes the staff member's mannerisms toward this older gentleman had nothing to do with race, as they were both older men of the same ethnic background. It just is what it is. One can't be overly sensitive when shopping at the Thrift House. I am surprised to read that a service dog was not welcomed, but the writer of that review failed to clarify if the dog was a trained service dog with documentation and whether or not the dog was wearing a vest. Even I would be surprised if the dog was turned away in those circumstances. When donating, be aware that donations coming from households with cats are discarded, per the manager, who appears to have a personal dislike of those furry creatures. (Cat hair is the dead give away, so wash anything well before donating if you have a cat.) I don't go to thrift shops often, but when I do, I start at the Thrift House. I also donate there. Normally, the staff is not overly fussy, just not welcoming, and the finds are worth any rudeness one might experience.
