So I made my way to Tony's to stock up and get started. The staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Prices vary from reasonable to very expensive but that's to be expected with such a grand variety. This last season I lost a couple of small grasses and a couple of lupine to the hot summer heat but everything else looks great. The large hanging baskets that I put into the large pots on my deck were my favorites. I'll be back in the spring for more things to beautify my yard.

Their prices are very reasonable. I always have the best luck with their plants, they take-off quickly and thrive. I can always find a few unique plants that I have never seen nor read about. We had an idea of what we wanted, and within minutes they were gathering pieces from around the grounds and building two complete fountains right in front of us so we could compare styles, sound, and flow. They filled each fountain by hand, balanced them perfectly, and turned them on so we could experience the full effect. We were honestly blown away. The craftsmanship, the care, and the attention to detail were on another level. Stefan's pricing is more than fair -- especially considering we had looked online beforehand and anything comparable was well over $3,000. His deal was so good we couldn't pass it up. He answered every question with patience and expertise, and let us know they could deliver to the Fisher's Landing area after glazing the piece, which we requested. Just as promised, Stefan called on Wednesday and arrived promptly for delivery. He and his one man crew handled the extremely heavy base with ease and professionalism, bringing everything carefully around to our backyard. In under 30 minutes, they had the fountain set, filled, leveled, running beautifully, and even treated the water with algicide. The level of service was truly above and beyond. What a great little but mighty plant nursery in S.E. Portland Oregon…read more I used to live in this neighborhood and it has many hidden gems. Birds and Bees Nursery is one of them. I'm a member of Carnivorous Plants Society of Oregon and one of my things is finding places that sell Carnivorous Plants outside of the big box stores. Sure the big Home store has plenty of Venus Flytraps every year but it's a cruel thing to see a plant abused by employees who don't know how to care for such a plant. First of all this plant has 2. basic needs. 1. All the direct sunlight it can get. At least 12 hours a day. 2. Distilled Water or Rain water. To see this plant living inside the store on a shelf dries out is a difficult thing to see. If it is watered, Tap Water us what it's given. Tap water is a for sure slow death to a Venus Flytrap Plant. So in my search, I found a little nursery in the burbs. Next to a Taco Smell restaurant, full of all sorts of plants from vines to carnivorous plants. In my interest, they had Sundews, Picture Plants and a ton of Venus Flytraps all sitting in the full sun. I found what I thought was a good specimen and when I picked up and looked at the Venus Flytrap I wanted, I realized it was actually 3 small and one slightly larger Venus Flytrap plants in the same pot for (I'm pretty sure in right. I was so excited to find such an awesome plant that I kinda forgot and the receipt wasn't helpful.) $15.00. They're usually about $10.00 for a common Venus Flytrap plant. I basically bought 4 plants for $3.75 a piece. With such great prices, my wife found a couple plants she couldn't leave without. We both left Birds and Bees happy. Update on our plants. They're all thriving in their new home.

We learned so much about: - history of terrariums and how it was used to transport plants up until the 1960s - how two hippies fell in love and started a terrarium shop together in Dayton - how terrariums caused colonization - Theodore Roosevelt killing a mountain lion with his bare hands and being a taxidermy and terrarium lover, also the scientific president - tea and its history of monopolization - 3 layers of charcoal/lava rock, soil and plants - to not press plants up against the glass wall which will cause them to rot - all the various plant varieties - magnets for sale on the terrarium for $5 - dart frog appetites are determined by what foods they eat (they have a few in the terrariums up front!) - Daniel's story from a pastor to a terrarium teacher / a dad of 6 - isopods and springtail care in the terrarium We also started the class early around 2:50 and stayed way past until 5:30 cuz we were having so much fun designing and talking with Daniel! I've been wanting to do a terrarium class for a long time and recently paid the big bucks to make…read moreit happen! The class starts with an overview of terrariums in history, which is more interesting than you might think. Then you get hands-on with building the terrarium, from pouring in rocks and soil to choosing plants and adding decorative elements. It's a lot of fun and feels like a messy art project like when you were a kid in school. The whole things lasts about two hours. There were about 16 people total in the class. You're invited to bring beverages and snacks to make an occasion out of it. It costs $30-60 to join the class, depending on how big your group is. Then it's another $50-400 for the container, plants, soil, etc. So it can get quite costly depending on the size and shape of terrarium you wish to build. You cannot bring your own container to prevent contamination. One thing to note is they offer lifetime maintenance help if your plants start dying or terrarium ecosystem doesn't seem to be working right. The shop is also open to visit outside a class. You can buy a pre-made terrarium or they can also help make a terrarium in your own container outside of classes because they have time to clean it. It's a very unique shop and I'm glad it exists in Portland!
