What a gem! I ordered some plants including quadricolor yucca from Joy Creek Nursery when I lived in AZ and they did beautifully. Now that I'm in Oregon I have a whole new world of plant options to grow and decided a 70 mile trip to Joy Creek would be worthwhile. I saw in the Oregonian that this plant nursery offers informative classes and get-together all summer long. I attended one last Sunday , 8/22/18, about Hydrangeas, learned a ton and got a guided tour of the display gardens featuring some breathtaking specimens. It was the best way to see what plants will look if well cared for when they are mature. Wanting to practice "right plant, right place", I was able to identify some that would do well in the more sun drenched locations of my garden and see how the 10 different hydrangeas I ordered and installed in shade areas last fall would/should do. I've included some photos from Joy Creek's display garden here with their popular names (I did my best!) and picked up many treasures to install. Our Joy Creek guide (?co-owner Maurice Horn) was wonderful and stuck around to answer questions after the tour. All the staff were generous with information and delicious homemade chocolate chip cookies and lemonade were offered to the class attendees. I recommend you visit during blooming season of your favorite plants but I have used their website for most of my mail order purchases over the years. The information provided there is very helpful in making selections and shipping and handling has always been more than reasonable. Joy Creek Nursery is definitely a treasure for those looking for out-of-the-ordinary plant material and a 5 Star experience for me. read more

As described by one of the employees here, this nursery specializes in 'unusual perennials'. You won't find your typical trucked in commercial annuals but instead a fantastic selection of unique cultivars. This nursery propagates a lot of their own stock and have wonderful display gardens on sight to help fuel your inspiration. The staff is incredibly friendly and will go out of their way to say hi to you, great costumer service! This nursery is a great place to visit even if you're not necessarily planning on purchasing plants. read more

There aren't enough words to describe how lucky I feel that Joy Creek exists. Every Sunday, from spring until fall, there are fantastic, informative workshops, on all sorts of topics....not to be missed. And, the staff is so knowledgeable! I went to Joy Creek Nursery in search of a few plants that I haven't been able to find in Portland's other nurseries, mainly Astrantia and Omphalodes. I am so glad I made the trip out there! I was greeted by a trio of hellos as I arrived and made to feel right at home. I was given an overview of the retail space layout, a map to the surrounding gardens where I was free to wander and see what was growing and blooming and offered coffee and cookies. Wow, talk about customer service. I left, a couple of hours later, with all the plants on my list plus a few more, a schedule of their summer classes and the intention to return again soon. They only mini drawback is that the prices are higher than other places around town. BUT the customer service, atmosphere and overall experience can make me over look this, especially for hard to find plants. read more

I go out of my way to avoid this nursery, snooty snootertons! I don't go to a nursery because I know everything. Anytime I have gone to Joy Creek they have treated me like I'm dumb and can hardly believe I don't know the horticultural name of plants. I'm thankful that this isn't the only quality nursery for miles. On the other hand, it IS nice to walk through the nursery if you can avoid the staff and owners. read more

Today I visited Joy Creek Nursery for the first time. I'm not an expert, so I really appreciate when someone is willing to answer questions and make suggestions based on the ideas I've expressed. Joy Creek came through and then some. I wanted to plant some really special arrangements in my deck boxes (hubby does most of the big gardening), and I was so pleased to find an assortment of offerings that weren't run-of-the-mill. I found really beautiful, healthy plants, and the owner (I'm presuming here based on the depth of his knowledge, generally and with regard to their inventory) was so solicitous, informative, and helpful, I left with an assortment that's going to make the loveliest arrangements EVER! Joy Creek may not have the lowest prices, but this is a real-life example of "you get what you pay for." I couldn't be happier! read more

I ordered three clumps of an ornamental grass on line. I wasn't sure how well that would work, but I was completely unable to find the cultivar I wanted locally. The box arrived last night and the packaging really did the job. The roots were wrapped in plastic wrap to keep moisture in and prevent any mess. They were well-spaced with tons of newspaper to keep them from getting smashed. The plants were in beautiful condition and I was very impressed. read more

I visited Joy Creek Nursery this past summer 2010 for the first time with my wife and her college room mate. The staff was, to say the least, extremely helpful. One of the co-owners took us on a private tour and pointed out many of the different and varied species of plants and flowers that they have. They have a variety of Dahlia I haven't seen elsewhere. We hired Joy Creek to do a major landscape design and installation project at our house. Positives: 1. They know plants and do a good job on site preparation. 2. The guys who actually came out to install the plants worked extremely hard in unpleasant weather. Negatives: 1. Condescending. 2. Overpriced. 3. Poor customer service. Contract required them to follow several months post-installation and to replace plants that died within 1 year. They breached both requirements. Once they collected our final payment, we never heard from them again. We would absolutely not hire again. read more

Poor Customer service. Purchased 10 plants from Joy Creek Nursery less than a year, 8 plants managed to survive. We called Customer service for replacements since we followed their planting instructions to the T. They tried to blamed us for not taking care the plants and no resolution was offered. We will never do business with them again. Better stick with your local nursery. read more
